An Abuja-based cleric and legal scholar, Rev. Fr. Anthony Azuwike, has expressed concern over rising suicide cases among young people in Nigeria, describing the trend as a serious and growing societal challenge.

Azuwike, Head of the Department of Private and Property Law at Veritas University, Abuja, made the observation during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.

He said suicide, though a long-standing global issue, had intensified recently due to economic hardship and social pressures.

“Suicide is a global phenomenon, but it is becoming more alarming as economic conditions worsen.

“Available statistics show suicidal behaviour among youths is now a major concern, stressing the need for urgent preventive measures.

“This is a problem that requires serious attention and stronger mental health support systems,” he said.

Azuwike told NAN that students were equally affected, as they faced academic pressure and uncertainty.

“Students are part of the general population and are exposed to the same pressures affecting young people everywhere,” he said.

He identified parental and societal expectations as major contributors.

“Once young people are unable to meet expectations, they often lose hope and feel overwhelmed,” he explained.

The cleric also cited financial pressure, saying “Education is not cheap, and the struggle to meet daily needs creates emotional strain for many students,” he said.

He added that relationship challenges and health conditions also contributed.

“Emotional distress from broken relationships or chronic illness can leave young people feeling helpless and in need of stronger psychosocial support,” Azuwike said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
