A UK-based Nigerian physician, Dr Tokunbo Fasuyi, says prioritising trust, transparency, and accountability can revolutionise patient care and boost Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Fasuyi, Founder of Aegis Private Health Consultancy, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

He emphasised that trust was key to the patient-doctor relationship, noting that poor communication often left patients frustrated and confused.

Fasuyi recalled his UK training, where he learned to communicate complex medical concepts simply, saying, “You must be able to communicate with a five-year-old and they must understand what you’re saying.”

He stressed that patients deserved clear explanations and the right to ask questions until they are satisfied.

“That’s one area that we need to really look at in Nigeria’s healthcare.”

Fasuyi noted that patients required trust in the specialists, facility and supportive environment to enhance treatment outcomes.

In a bid to address challenges Nigerians face in accessing quality healthcare, Fasuyi disclosed that Aegis Healthcare introduced a unique service that bridges the gap between trust, expertise, and medical care.

The company’s physician-led approach ensures that clients receive personalised guidance and coordination, leveraging the expertise of medical professionals with experience in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).

He noted that Aegis’ services cater to three primary needs: coordinating care from Nigeria to the UK, ensuring seamless transitions and informed decision-making.

According to him, they also assist with second opinions, providing clarity and confidence for those uncertain about their diagnosis or treatment options.

Fasuyi said Aegis offered health guidance, providing ongoing support and advocacy for individuals navigating complex medical journeys.

“By partnering with reputable Nigerian facilities and offering virtual consultations, Aegis Healthcare promotes local healthcare solutions while ensuring global standards.”

Ultimately, he said, Aegis Healthcare empowered Nigerians to make informed decisions about their health, bridging the gap between local challenges and global opportunities.

Fasuyi added that the service which is particularly for high-net-worth individuals seeking specialist treatment abroad also has a give-back mandate.

He said the company’s give-back mandate provides services to those who cannot afford them, and demonstrates its commitment to social responsibility.

According to Fasuyi, healthcare providers must be held accountable for their actions.

He emphasised the need for effective regulation, monitoring, and enforcement to maintain standards.

These, he noted, would assist in defeating quackery and restore trust in the nation’s health system.
