A Christian cleric, Most Rev. Dan Okafor, has urged members of the Nigerian Armed Forces to resist any temptation to overthrow a democratically elected government.
Okafor made the appeal on Sunday in Abuja during an inter-denominational service marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
He cautioned against the growing wave of military coups in parts of West Africa, describing them as threats to stability and democratic governance.
In his sermon, titled ‘Gratitude, Encouragement and Spiritual Strength,’ from 2 Chronicles 32:5–8, he urged professionalism, patriotism and loyalty to Nigeria’s democracy.
“As I round up this sermon, I have two appeals for members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“First, as we approach the 2027 general elections, you must remain neutral to all political parties.
“Second, as the wind of coups is blowing across West Africa, do not think about it,” the cleric said.
He cited Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Guinea as examples where elected governments were toppled, warning that coups undermine development and public trust.
Okafor commended Nigerian troops and security agencies for their sacrifices in defending the nation and safeguarding citizens’ daily activities.
“It is because of your sacrifices that Nigerians can sleep with their eyes closed and pursue their daily livelihoods,” he said.
He encouraged the military not to be discouraged by national challenges, expressing confidence that Nigeria would overcome its security difficulties.
The cleric prayed that sponsors of terrorism and banditry, “wherever they may be, whether in government, within the military or elsewhere,” would be exposed.
The service formed part of nationwide activities honouring fallen heroes and celebrating serving personnel of the Armed Forces and other security agencies. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
