Abuja, Jan.16, 2026(NAN)The Generation for Societal Change (GSC), an NGO, has called on leaders and Nigerians to imbibe a culture of values and ethics to strengthen policy effectiveness and institutional trust.
The group’s Global Coordinator, Mr Okechukwu Nworah, made the call on Friday in Abuja at its annual Global Values and Ethics press conference.
The theme of the conference was “Encouraging Nigeria and Africa to lead the global movement for a value –driven culture as the foundation for sustainable prosperity.”
According to him, sustainable national development does not begin with force or coercion, but with a shift in values, ethics, mindset and behaviour starting with the individual.
“Our challenges today are not merely political, or economic, they are fundamentally values challenges.
`Corruption persists when integrity is optional , bad leadership thrives when citizens have moral deficiencies.
“Hunger remains when productivity, accountability, and the dignity of labour are undervalued.
“The Nigerian Constitution, Chapter 11, section 23, already provides a moral compass through seven National Ethics (Core Values) which include:discipline, integrity, dignity of labour, social justice, religious tolerance, self-reliance patriotism, ‘’ he said.
Nworah said that if these national core values were internalised in homes, workplaces, markets, institutions and public offices, they would become the invisible infrastructure for national prosperity.
The coordinator said that GSC was conceived in 2007 and it operates in Abuja, Lagos and Lokoja with an authorisation to scale across the 774 local government areas, mobilising corps members to champion national values at the grassroots.
He said that more than 70,000 Nigerians had been directly impacted by GSC programmes globally, strengthening civic consciousness, ethical leadership, and societal cohesion.
“Our vision for 2026 and beyond is to form strategic partnership by deepening engagement with national, regional, and international to mainstream conversation on values, ethics, citizenship through documentaries, features , radio, and digital platforms.
“We plan to inaugurate a global ethics and values recognition programme to celebrate individuals and organisations who exemplify Nigeria’s national values.
“ We are strengthening partnership with government agencies, educational institutions, private sector actors, civil society organisations, and international development partners to build a unified movement for a value renaissance.
“We will continue to scale leadership programmes and expand the National Orientation Agency (NOA)/ GSC COS nationwide, ensuring young Nigerians become ambassadors of ethical leadership and responsible citizens, ‘’ he said.
On his part, Mr Magose Abraham, Chairman, Board of Trustee, GSC said that Nigeria is a super country that has in its constitution in Chapter two, section 23 a set of ethics.
Abraham said that these ethics form the core values which say this is what we are known for and who we are as Nigerians.
“ If you see those seven core values, they are amazing and this shows that we are a blessed country, these are tools which should not be deployed here alone.
“ Nigeria needs to take the lead to deploy these values to the world, ‘’ he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
