Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau says the death of Prof. Yohana Izam, the former Vice Chancellor of Plateau State University, Bokkos, is a huge loss to the state.
Mutfwang, who was represented by his Deputy, Mrs Josephine Piyo, said this during the funeral service of the deceased on Tuesday in Jos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Izam, 59, died on Jan. 18.
The governor, who described the late professor of Building as an academic colossus, said the deceased died at his prime.
He particularly said that Izam died when the state needed his wealth of experience to forge ahead.
“We are deeply saddened and pained by the passing of our brother and true son of Plateau.
“This is the best time that we need his input towards the growth of Plateau, but who are we to question God?
“He has vast knowledge in both academics and politics; he was humble, kind, generous and an astute educationist,” Mutwang said.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Sen. Joshua Dariye, a former governor of Plateau, said that the deceased had sterling qualities.
“I’m here on solemn ground because of my personal relationship with the deceased.
“When I was governor, we identified him because of his sterling qualities; we appointed him provost of College of Art, Science and Technology, Kurgwi.
“He performed extremely well in Kurgwi and we later appointed him a Commisioner under my administration.
“This is a personal loss to me, and I pray that God will grant him eternal rest,” Dariye said.
On his part, Mr Isaac Wakili, the Paramount Chief of Izere, described the deceased as a consumate academic who had good leadership qualities.
Wakili said the deceased no doubt had left a huge vacuum within Izere land.
Similarly, his sister, Mrs Janet Izam, described her late brother as a peace lover, gentle and God fearing.
Izam said that her late brother was a gift to the family, adding that he impacted many lives when he was alive.
“He was a prayerful man, a caring husband, brother, father and leader per excellence.
“As kids, our father never punished him, there was no reason to do so because he was a perfect man since his young days.
“He was a gift to our family, community, the Church and Plateau in general; he lived an impactful lifestyle.
“His life was short, but we are grateful for the beautiful memories he left behind,” she said.
NAN reports that other dignitaries that attended the funeral service included the Speaker of Plateau Assembly and his Deputy, former Vice Chancellors of Plateau University and University of Jos, past and serving government officials, among others. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
