The University of Maiduguri Alumni Association has inaugurated its first National and Global Executive Council, aimed at restructuring the association after five decades of the institution’s existence.

The Global President Shettima Kukawa, at the event on Saturday said it was a turning point aimed at transforming the association into a unified, institutional and globally connected alumni body.

Kukawa said the new leadership would prioritise unity, structure and impact to address longstanding challenges of inconsistency, disengagement and weak participation among members.

According to him, planned reforms include a harmonised alumni database, stronger digital engagement, standardised chapter governance and measurable performance frameworks.

“For the first time in the 50-year history of the University of Maiduguri, we are formally inaugurating a National and Global Executive Council of the University of Maiduguri Alumni Association.

“50 years of producing leaders, 50 years of shaping intellect and character and 50 years of resilience and excellence.

“And today, for the first time, we take a major step towards building an alumni body that is truly national, truly global, and truly institutional,” he said.

He added that the association would mobilise resources for scholarships, mentorship programmes, research support, infrastructure development and industry–academia collaboration for the university.

The president urged alumni, especially younger graduates and senior stakeholders, to actively contribute time, expertise and influence to reposition the association globally.

He commended the Board of Trustees, university management and transition committees for sustaining the vision that led to the inauguration of the new executive council.

He expressed commitment to transparent, inclusive and accountable leadership to ensure measurable progress and lasting institutional impact.

In his goodwill message, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Mohammed Mele, represented by Prof. Shehu Liberty, a lecturer, thanked the planning committee for hosting the programme, adding that it was a significant milestone for the university.

He was optimistic that the newly appointed EXCOs would take the association to greater heights.
