The Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ali M. Ali, has commended the retiring Planning, Research and Statistics (PRS) Director, Mr Kayode Olaitan, calling his service impactful and highly valued.

Ali gave the commendation at a reception held in Olaitan’s honour on Monday in Abuja, where management and staff paid tribute to his nearly two decades of service to the agency.

“Your institutional memory, depth of experience and quiet mentorship will continue to matter in the years ahead.

“Your service is valuable. Don’t be a stranger to us; reach out whenever necessary,” Ali said.

He described the retiree as calm, appreciative and firm when necessary; qualities considered essential in a high-pressure newsroom and strategic administrative environment.

Also speaking, the Editor-in-Chief of NAN, Mufutau Ojo, said Olaitan’s defining attribute was his character rather than his position.

“As you move into the next chapter of your life, your greatest asset has never been your title or profession, it has always been your character,” Ojo said.

He noted that Olaitan maintained professional boundaries while nurturing strong personal relationships, never allowing hierarchy to distort loyalty or integrity.

“That balance is rare. Not for one day did you take friendship or trust for granted,” he added.

In his remarks, Olaitan expressed appreciation to the management and staff for the recognition, calling NAN ‘a family’.

“Each time I was called upon, it was with a clear conscience, and that is something I value,” he said.

He recalled moments of professional challenge and reflection, noting that many decisions throughout his career were shaped by faith and a commitment to fairness.

“There were times I came seeking clarity, and I am grateful for the guidance and support I received. We are a family, and I remain sincerely thankful,” he said.

Olaitan also acknowledged the support of his wife and family, stating that a stable home environment was crucial to sustaining a demanding career in journalism and public service.

NAN reports that Olaitan joined the agency in 2007 as Deputy Editor-in-Chief and later served in key editorial and administrative roles, including Head of the Lagos Office and Head of the Features Desk, before his appointment as Director of PRS.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics from the University of Ibadan (1984–1987).

The Planning, Research and Statistics Department plays a central role in NAN’s institutional framework, overseeing strategic planning, performance evaluation, data analysis, research coordination and policy alignment to ensure evidence-based and accountable operations.

As Director, Olaitan supervised internal planning mechanisms, coordinated research-driven initiatives and supported management decisions with statistical and performance insights, strengthening coordination between editorial output and administrative planning.

Speakers at the reception said retirement was a transition rather than an end, noting that Olaitan’s experience would continue to be valuable for the agency’s growth.

The event concluded with prayers and goodwill messages, with colleagues wishing him fulfilment and continued impact in the next phase of his life. (NAN)
