The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote transparency, accountability and ethical practices in public procurement.

A statement issued by Zira Nagga, Head, Press and Public Relations, BPP, in Abuja on Monday, said the agreement was aimed at strengthening public financial management and ensuring value for money in government spending.

The Director-General, BPP, Dr Adebowale Adedokun, who spoke at the signing ceremony, described the collaboration as a milestone in Nigeria’s procurement reform efforts.

”Public procurement is the fulcrum of all professionalism. It brings all professional bodies into an ecosystem that works for the betterment of Nigeria,” he said.

Adedokun explained that the MoU would enable the bureau to report errant accountants to ICAN for disciplinary action, noting that the measure would ensure accountability for professionals found wanting in the discharge of their duties.

In his remarks, the President of ICAN, Haruna Yahaya, pledged the institute’s commitment to supporting the bureau in achieving its mandate.

Yahaya identified four key focus areas of the partnership to include value for money, strict discipline, national savings and capacity development.

“The reward for hard work is more work,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the collaboration would yield significant benefits for the country.
