The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) has commended the personnel of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) firefighters for professionalism in the Feb. 23 airport fire.
Its President, Mr Ben Nnabue, in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, said training and motivation of staff played a significant role in the response operation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fire at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal One started at 3.30 p.m. on Monday, destroying millions of equipment.
Nnabue said the bravery displayed by the officers, alongside other assisting emergency responders, ensured the safe rescue of all occupants within the terminal at the time of the incident.
“We are grateful that no lives were lost, a testament to the high level of skill and dedication exhibited by these heroes”.
He said the successful outcome showcases the impact of FAAN firefighters’ professional training and retraining programmes.
Nnabue said it shows motivation drives workers to go the extra mile, even risking their lives on the job.
“No machine or artificial intelligence can ever replicate the human experience, empathy, and sacrifice demonstrated by these officers during Monday’s emergency response.
“To them, we say a resounding thank you”.
Nnabue urged FAAN management to keep prioritising staff training, ensuring their skills stay up to ICAO, NCAA, and other aviation regulators’ standards.
“As we always say, “Train aviation personnel and ensure the development and sustainability of the aviation sector.”
He commended the Lagos State Fire Service, LASEMA, NEMA, and other agencies that worked with FAAN during the emergency, saying their support was invaluable. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
