A Cross River-based NGO, Hope Ability Empowerment Initiative, has commended the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for evolving reforms that will protect the interest of physically challenged people.
Dr Martina Ntino, the Executive Director, made the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Calabar.
Ntino described the new policies being implemented by JAMB for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination as progressive and fair.
She said the policies would provide equal educational opportunities for candidates with disabilities seeking admission into tertiary institutions in the country.
The executive director said that registration refunds, transportation support, and accommodation for blind candidates and their guides were practical steps toward fairness in the examinations.
Ntino said that there was need for clear communication during registration to ensure that prospective candidates did not miss available benefits.
She expressed support for assistive materials such as audiobooks and customised services for candidates with visual, hearing, cognitive, and learning challenges in the 2026 examination.
“I urge the authorities to provide adequate awareness, guidance, and logistical support to candidates in remote communities to prevent distance or poverty from affecting their participation,” she said.
Ntino recommended stricter supervision of private examination centres and publication of detailed guidelines outlining concessions to promote accountability and transparency.
She warned that demanding upfront payments from blind candidates without clearly stating refund arrangements could cause anxiety, financial strain, and feelings of exclusion. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
