CCD calls for elimination of discrimination against PWDs

The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) on Sunday called for the elimination of discrimination against persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the country.
The Interim Head of CCD, Florence Austin, made the call in a statement issued in Lagos, to commemorate the 2023 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is a UN day, celebrated annually on Dec. 3, to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at every level of society and development.
The day also raises awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of political, social, economic, and cultural life.
Austin also called for efforts to enhance accessibility and empower individuals with disabilities to fully participate in all aspects of life.
She said the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) served as a blueprint for a more sustainable and equitable future for PWDs.
According to her, the 2023 theme: “United in Action to Rescue and Achieve the SDGs for, with, and by Persons with Disabilities”, emphasises the collective effort required to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
“As we celebrate diversity, we recognise the unique strengths and perspectives that persons with disabilities bring to our communities.
“The SDGs serve as a blueprint to achieve a sustainable and equitable future for PWDs and this year’s theme underscores the pivotal role persons with disabilities play in realising these goals.
“By fostering unity and collaboration, we aim to break down barriers, promote accessibility and create an environment where everyone can actively contribute to building a better world.
“It aims to promote the rights and wellbeing of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the challenges they face.
“The day also seeks to highlight the importance of creating an inclusive and accessible world for all.
“Join us in promoting a world where every person, regardless of ability, can thrive.
“By standing united in action, we can truly rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
