A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Tech Herfrica, has trained 260 women in Nasarawa on the use of technology to boost their income.
Director of Operations at Tech Herfrica, Miss Esohe Ekunwe said in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday that the training took place on Nov. 29 in Andaha community of Nasarawa in collaboration with Amplitude Group, an Africa-focused Telecommunications Infrastructure Company.
Ekunwe said the training was Tech Herfrica’s way of improving the lives of rural women through its EquipHer4Growth programme, a beacon of hope aimed at propelling the rural economy through digital and financial inclusion.
“The training focused on digital literacy, e-commerce, financial literacy, and access to financial services,” she said.
“Before the wheels of change were set in motion, a community leader, handpicked by the District Community Leader, worked with Tech Herfrica’s representatives to meticulously oversee the selection and profiling of beneficiaries.
“This crucial phase ensured that the EquipHer4Growth initiative reached those who needed it most.
“Entry meetings further solidified the project team’s connection with Andaha, establishing trust and understanding,” Ekunwe said.
According to her, a pre-training assessment showed that only 14.62 per cent out of the 260 women interviewed owned smartphones.
“The development cast a revealing light on the challenges faced by the community as we were made to provide smartphones to the women for the training.
“Out of the 260 women, 50.77 per cent had access to banking, and e-commerce awareness was a distant concept.
“And with these revelations, we ensured that the training sessions were tailored to bridge these gaps, and we used pidgin and Hausa languages to deliver our message which spanned digital literacy, e-commerce, financial literacy, and access to financial services,” she added.
Ekunwe said that a report of the training showed that 92 per cent of the participants exhibited heightened digital and financial literacy, while 96.2 per cent expressed newfound confidence in utilising technology.
She further said that 10 clusters also received smartphones to harness technology for improved agricultural output and e-commerce activities, leveraging Tech Herfrica’s co-created e-commerce solution, herlocalmarket.
She added, “The EquipHer4Growth programme is committed to leaving a lasting impact.
“The programme has trained cluster leaders who are now change agents who played pivotal roles in providing ongoing support, education, and information dissemination.”
