Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, on Thursday led a rally in Lagos, to canvass support for Mr Fuad Laguda, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidatate for Surulere 1 Federal Constituency by-election.
The News Agency of Nigeria;(NAN) reports that Gbajabiamila, driving with Laguda, led a convoy of vehicles to major roads in Surulere, canvassing votes for the APC candidate.
The convoy of vehicles, filled with APC stakeholders and supporters, took off from the Teslim Balogun Stadium and moved through Shitta Round-about, Adeniran Ogunsanya, Bode Thomas, Itire Road and Ogunlana Drive.
The Chief of Staff, along with Laguda and Lagos State APC Chairman, Mr Cornelius Ojelabi, waved the APC flag as they acknowledged cheers from members of the constituency.
Party members, dressed in APC branded vests, doled out gifts, such as exercise books, pens and air freshner, to residents during the road show, rounding off Laguda’s campaign activities.
Speaking with newsmen shortly before take-off, Laguda said he was optimistic of defeating all the other candidates to emerge the representative of the constituency at the House of Representatives.
He thanked party members for coming out en masse to support him at the rally, saying the large turn out reflected the support enjoyed by the party in the constituency.
“I appreciate everybody being out today for us. This is large for the party and for us.
“You can see the amount of support as a party, and we pray for the same energy as we are going to the polls when the party will claim the mandate again,” he said.
Also Speaking, member of the State House of Assembly (APC -Surulere 1), Mr Desmond Elliott, urged members of the constituency to vote for Laguda, to record a resounding victory for the party on Saturday.
“I want to urge all resident of Surulere to cast their votes for Fuad Laguda on Saturday.
“If voted, he will represent us at the Federal House of Representatives. Please come out early enough and vote. By the grace of God, we will get the victory,” he said.
The Chairman of APC in Surulere Local Government, Mr Sheriff Balogun, said he had no doubts that Laguda would represent the constituency well if elected.
He said the APC candidate was a man of competence and capacity, saying he would carry on with the good works of Gbajabiamila in the constituency.
He urged residents to come out en masse and vote for the APC candidate.
“Today is the last day of campaign for our candidate, Laguda, who we wants to represent us in the Green Chamber.
“I urge everyone in Surulere to come out en masse and vote for him because if he is voted for, he will replace the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, as our representative,” he said.
Mr Adewale Abiola, an APC chieftain in Surulere, thanked Gbajabiamila for all he had done for the people of Surulere.
He said party members believed that Laguda would not disappoint, if given the opportunity to represent the constituency.
“Our former Speaker has done a lot. The signs are everywhere. We believe Laguda will do well. I want to urge all residents of Surulere to vote for Laguda so that we can continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy,” he added.
NAN reports that the election, slated for Feb. 3, is to replace Gbajabiamila, who resigned his membership of the House of Representatives, following his appointment as Chief of Staff. (NAN)
