Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development (SCDDD) has called for synergy between the United Nations and Africa Union in all peacekeeping operations in Africa.

Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Founder of the Centre, said this on Monday in Abuja at the African Regional Dialogue Summit of the Future themed “The Africa we want and the UN we need’’.

Gambari stressed the need for the UN and AU to work together in all peace keeping operations in Africa for best outcomes in conflict resolution and peace management.

“It is imperative for all United Nations peace keeping operations in Africa to be jointly mandated and run by both the UN and the AU.

“With synergy, the commitment of the continent will be clear and the UN would be a partner in the regions operations instead of deploying purely UN peace keeping forces which as we know many have recently failed.

“Africans cannot be isolated in this kind of operations, since it is its challenge, it should also be a part of the solution,’’ he said.

Gambari also said that Africa deserved more representation at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for effective participation and responsiveness.

He said that Africa should be allowed to participate in these various global political diplomacy and wide range economic and financial decision making policies and programmes.

Gambari said that this would enhance the continent’s stands and contributions to further dialogues around the new global order.

Gambari added that the global order that must be collectively defined, designed and defended must have the input of Africa and Africans.

He said that Africa could no longer be required to defend orders that it did not define or design and as such should not be isolated in global discuss and network of alliance that were critical.

According to him, African should not be isolated especially on issues that were invertible and will have an impact on the people, their development and in the preservation of their culture.

Mr Bankole Adeoye, African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, said that the AU was the home of all 55-member states and remains the rallying point to address all challenges.

He said that for best result of the UN reform on Security Council in Africa, it must be legitimate, pro-African, equitable, inclusive and must be owned by the global south.

“The UN we need must not be the rule based order that will be inconsistent with the charter and double standard; we want a UN that would reflect the African interest.

“It is a good start that the AU has been accepted as a permanent member of the G20; for the first time AU will be sitting and representing its member states in the G20.

“But the global governance still reflects post-immediate and post 2nd world war,’’ he said.

He called for a UN that would counter terrorism, deepen democracy, and birth a new generation of international peace and security architecture that speaks critically about the interest of Africa among others.

Mr Leonardo Santos-Simao, UN coordinating office of Dakar, who represented the UN Secretary-General, said that the convening of the dialogue and the theme was apt and timely.

“This is the time when Africa is experiencing various challenges and an opportunity such as this dialogue must be fully exploited to fashion out a better Africa and a UN that would meet our needs,’’ he said.

He said that the potentials of Africa remained breathe taking and with international corporation and solidarity it could be Africa’s century.

He said that the UN remains committed and consistent on the need to create an international financial architecture that would ensure the financing of sustainable development in all countries. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
