Tinubu confers national honour on Yakubu as INEC tenure ends

โ€ŽPresident Bola Tinubu has accepted Prof. Mahmood Yakubuโ€™s departure as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) , following the expiration of his second term in office

โ€ŽIn recognition of his service, Tinubu on Tuesday conferred on Yakubu the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThe announcement was made in a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, in Abuja.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽYakubu was first appointed in Nov. 2015 as INECโ€™s 14th chairman. His initial five-year term was renewed in 2020 and has now officially ended.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThe President thanked him for his services to the nation and his efforts to sustain Nigeriaโ€™s democracy, particularly through the organisation of free and fair elections throughout his two-term tenure.

โ€ŽTinubu also directed that Yakubu should hand over to the most senior national commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will direct the affairs of the commission until the completion of the process to appoint a successor.

โ€ŽIn the letter dated Oct. 3, 2025, Yakubu thanked the President for the opportunity to serve the nation as chairman of the commission since 2015. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
