The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Ms Grace Ike, has reaffirmed the union’s commitment to the welfare of journalists in the territory.
Ike gave the assurance on Tuesday in Abuja, in an interview with newsmen on the sidelines of the distribution of over 600 bags of rice to members, as part of its Christmas welfare initiative.
Ike said that the gesture is a demonstration of the union’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of journalists, especially amid prevailing economic challenges.
The chairman explained that the initiative, now in its second consecutive year, aims at putting smiles on the faces of members during the festive season.
According to her, this is to reinforce the core values of the NUJ such as truth, justice, accountability, public service and national development.
“This is not just about sharing food items, it is about supporting our members and making them understand that they belong to a family.
“Christmas is about renewal, sharing and reflection, and today’s exercise reminds us of the true essence of our union, which is solidarity in service,” she said.
The chairman commended journalists for their sacrifices in amplifying voices of the voiceless, advocating press freedom and reporting under pressure adding that the union will consistently stand by journalists who stand for social justice.
Ike urged members to take ownership by participating in congresses and activities of the union to achieve a paradigm shift from what was the norm.
She expressed appreciation to media executives, chief executive officers, bureau chiefs, editors, partners and supporters who contributed to the success of the initiative.
In an emotional moment, the NUJ FCT chairman called for prayers for the soul of Mr Sunday Olatuyi, a journalist who died in an accident at Lugbe on Saturday night while returning from work.
Olatuyi passed on at the age of 40.
Until his death, he served as a Senior Cameraman at Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN Television) and had previously worked at Ben TV.
Ike appealed to his employers to support his family, noting that he left behind a wife and a six-month-old baby.
She also called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to intensify efforts to curb underage and reckless driving across the country.
Reacting, some journalists who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) expressed excitement and described the gesture as well thought out.
Mrs Ele Omaye said that she was excited to be a beneficiary and thanked the council for its goodwill while praying to God for more wisdom to do better.
Also reacting, another journalist, Mr Alex Okoro said that “the Christmas is worth it, we give thanks to the NUJ Chairman for a work well done and we hope for a better 2026.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
