The Akwa Ibom Government has procured world class equipment aimed at boosting sports in the state.
Speaking at a brief ceremony in Uyo, Paul Bassey, the Commissioner for Sports, said that some of the equipment were sourced from outside the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that items procured were sports racing bicycles, weightlifting bars and loads, table tennis boards, boxing headgears, dumbbells, lawn tennis and squash rackets among others.
NAN further reports that during the ceremony, the state government inaugurated a modern gymnasium, christened: “Ibom Gym”
Bassey said that the equipment would enable Akwa Ibom-based athletes to adequately prepare for state, national and international competitions.
“For several years, our athletes have struggled to access the basic equipment required for their training and development.
“Some had to use private facilities, and others visited neighbouring states with modern facilities, so they ultimately end up representing those states.
“These equipment and gymnasium will significantly enhance our athletes’ stamina, skills and techniques. We are set to produce global stars and legends,” he said.
The commissioner commended Gov. Umo Eno for his vision and commitment towards sports development.
Bassey urged Akwa Ibom-based athletes to take advantage of the facilities to secure their future in the world of sports.
“Sports is a viable platform for young men and women to discover their talents, gain meaningful employment, live purposeful lives, and inspire future generations,” he said.
Also speaking, Dr Iniobong Essien, the Chairman, Scrabble Association of Nigeria in Akwa Ibom, charged athletes to take advantage of the facilities to prepare for competitions, and win laurels for the state. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
