The Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP), in partnership with the Secondary Education Board (SEB) have trained 40 teachers in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) on integrating climate literacy into their teaching.
Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, President of the SPP, made this known at a climate change training workshop for Secondary Schools Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Okereke said the training is part of SPP’s broader effort to drive environmental awareness, promote sustainable behaviours among young people, and address the lack of in-depth climate education in schools.
“We are training 40 teachers on climate education based on the manual that we developed in 2025.
Okereke stated that the manual would enable teachers to teach their students and enable them to form climate clubs in all their schools
“We are training all the teachers in Abuja and all of the FCT, but today we are starting in AMAC.
He said that SPP is responsible for the advocacy for climate issues and other governmental issues.
Okereke said that SPP was working with the Department of Climate Change in the Ministry of Environment and has partnered with the FCT Secondary Education Board.
Mr Abdullahi Zakir, the Director Science, Technology and Mathematics, Secondary Education Board in the FCT, said that the workshop is therefore not just about training; but also about empowerment.
“As teachers, you are not only teachers of curriculum but shapers of mindset and values.
“The knowledge and awareness you pass on to your students will influence how the next generation understands environmental responsibility, sustainability, and innovation.
“Science provides us with the facts about climate change, while technology offers practical solutions from renewable energy and waste management systems to climate-smart agriculture and sustainable urban planning,” Zakir explained.
He added that by equipping teachers with accurate knowledge and effective teaching strategies, a foundation for informed, environmentally conscious citizens are being built.
“Our goal is to ensure that climate education becomes practical, engaging, and solution-driven within our classrooms.
“When students understand the science behind climate change and the role they can play in protecting the environment we nurture, they become responsible leaders and innovators in the future,” he said.
Mr Williams Eba, the Vice Principal Academics, Government Secondary School, Tundun Wada Zone 4 Abuja, said that the training would enable them as a school ensure environmental sustainability.
Dr Isa Abdulmalik, a teacher at FCT Secondary Education Board lauded the training saying it was a welcomed idea to tackle climate change in the FCT.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
