The Federal Government says the new 480-megawatt Abeokuta substation under construction in Ogun will be delivered and inaugurated by December.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of FGN Power Company, Mr Kenny Anuwe, gave the assurance on Thursday during an inspection of the ongoing Abeokuta substation project at Toolu community in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun.
Anuwe reaffirmed government’s commitment to improved electricity supply nationwide.
According to him, the administration of President Bola Tinubu is investing significantly in power infrastructure to address longstanding challenges in the sector.
He disclosed that resources had been committed to upgrading five brownfield substations in Abeokuta, Ayede, Offa, Onitsha, and Sokoto in Phase One.
He said the projects were expected to add about 986 megawatts to the national grid, boosting supply to homes, businesses, and industries.
He further said over 1,000 megawatts had already been injected into the grid through deployment of mobile substations and transformers under the Presidential Power Initiative.
“Also, the new facility, which complements the existing substation, will add 480 megawatts to the grid and improve electricity supply across the state.
“The civil works will be completed between June and July, while electrical installations will follow, with commissioning scheduled for December.
“Electricity is the lifeblood of our economy, and the mandate from Mr President is clear, which is to ensure this project is delivered within 2026 so Nigerians can begin to feel the impact of ongoing reforms in the power sector,” he said.
Anuwe commended President Tinubu for providing resources for the project and urged contractors to sustain momentum to meet delivery timelines.
The Chief Technical Officer of FGN Power Company, Mr Ebenezer Fapounda, said the project would upgrade capacity from 132kV to 330kV.
Fapounda noted that the development would reduce load shedding and address insufficient supply currently experienced from Ikeja West to Ogun.
The Project Manager, Siemens Energy, Mr Yusuf Mayhaja, also assured that work on the new Abeokuta substation upgrade is progressing as planned, with delivery scheduled for December.
Mayhaja said the development would enhance capacity and strengthen electricity supply across the network.
Also speaking, the Project Director for Siemens Energy, Mr Eli Akiki, expressed confidence in timely completion.
Akiki said the project was on track, noting that the company remained committed to delivering and inaugurating the substation before the end of 2026. (NAN)
