The Federal Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, strengthening human security and advancing justice reform.
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), gave this assurance in his speech on Thursday at the Finale of the Juritrust Centre for Socio-Legal Research and Documentation.
Fagbemi was represented by Hawua Dimka, the State Counsel of the Administration of Criminal Justice Department, Federal Ministry of Justice.
He commended the Juritrust Centre and its partners, particularly the MacArthur Foundation, for the laudable initiative.
He described the initiative as one aimed at strengthening knowledge and practical application of the Administration of Criminal Justice framework in Nigeria.
“Programmes such as this play a vital role in bridging the gap between legal theory and practical courtroom advocacy, while preparing the next generation of legal practitioners to effectively navigate the complexities of our criminal justice system.
“The Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 represents a landmark reform in Nigeria’s justice sector.
“Its effective implementation requires not only strong institutions but also well-trained and forward-thinking legal professionals.
“Moot competitions such as this provide an excellent platform for law students to sharpen their advocacy skills; deepen their understanding of criminal procedure, and develop the confidence required to contribute meaningfully to justice sector reforms,” he said.
He congratulated the participating universities for their dedication and the students for their commitment to hard work and intellectual rigour displayed throughout the competition.
The minister said the participants represent the future of the Nigerian Bar and Bench, and encouraged them to remain steadfast in upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
“As the Chief Law Officer of the Federation, I reaffirm the commitment of the Federal Ministry of Justice to supporting initiatives that promote legal education, strengthen the administration of criminal justice, and advance the rule of law in Nigeria.
“I wish all the finalists the very best and congratulate the organisers for successfully hosting this important initiative,” he said.
Speaking, the Director of the centre, Prof. Adedeji Adekunke (SAN), explained that the centre was a non-governmental organisation which focuses on research, training, social and legal factors in the society.
He called for urgent action on mentorship which helps to impact practical knowledge to the young lawyers.
Similarly, Dr Kole Shettima, the Director of MacArthur Foundation, said schools should leverage innovation and technology in a challenging world.
Speaking, Ms Mushalesa Udopa, from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), expressed joy at the competition, seeing it as a venue for nurturing the next generation of legal practitioners.
“This competition represents not only an academic exercise but also a vital platform for nurturing the next generation of justice sector leaders.
“To the participants, your dedication, intellectual vigor and passion for justice is truly inspiring.
“UNODC recognises that access to justice and effective accountable institutions are essential to achieving sustainable development goals, particularly SDGs,” she said.
Also speaking, Ms Angela Ugochukwu, from the Advocate Francis, said the Juritrust mentorship was important.
“Innovation is very crucial, because right now, you’re entering the legal space,” she said.
