A group of six governorship aspirants in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe has commended Vice-President Kashim Shettima for resolving the party’s gubernatorial impasse in the state.

The group, known as G-6, made the commendation in a statement issued on Tuesday after a meeting with Shettima on the lingering dispute ahead of the APC’s governorship primaries in the state.

The members of the group are former Inspector-General of Police, Mr Usman Baba, Mr Mustapha Maihaja, Sen. Ibrahim Bomai, Alhaji Lawan Geidam, Kashim Tumsah and Bashir Machina.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that six APC governorship aspirants in Yobe had earlier rejected the endorsement of a consensus candidate, describing the action as inconsistent with the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.

The aspirants had insisted on a transparent and democratic process for the emergence of the party’s candidate ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

In the statement, the G-6 said the meeting with the vice-president was extensive and fruitful.

The group commended Shettima for his commitment to democratic values, justice, fairness and unity in Yobe.

“We particularly appreciate his unwavering dedication to democratic values, justice, fairness, and the unity and stability of Yobe State,” the group said.

The aspirants also resolved to participate fully in the forthcoming governorship primaries in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC guidelines on direct primaries.

“The remaining members of the G-6 have unanimously resolved to fully participate in the forthcoming Yobe State Governorship Primaries in strict accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, as well as the APC Rules and Guidelines governing Direct Primaries,” the statement said.

The group called on supporters, stakeholders and party members to remain peaceful and united ahead of the primaries scheduled for May 23.

The statement announced the voluntary withdrawal of one of the aspirants, Alhaji Lawan Kolo Geidam, from the governorship race.

According to the group, Geidam agreed to step down in the interest of peace, unity and democratic progress in the state.

It added that the former aspirant had pledged support for whoever emerged through a credible and transparent primary election process.

The group assured residents of the state that it would continue to provide updates on developments surrounding the governorship primaries and other related political activities.
