Mr Segun Showunmi has described Mohammed Hayatu-Deen as the best opposition presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Showunmi was a former spokesman for Atiku Abubakar during the 2019 and 2023 presidential campaigns.

Speaking on a television programme in Abuja, Showunmi said Hayatu-Deen’s credentials and experience positioned him as a credible option for Nigeria’s leadership.

NAN also reports that Showunmi is convener of the Alternative Platform, a national opposition movement advocating new democratic leadership.

He said Hayatu-Deen stood out among opposition candidates, describing him as possessing the competence needed to address Nigeria’s economic challenges.

“That is the man that has the best CV. He is a breath of fresh air. I think he is brave enough to offer his experience,” he said.

Showunmi urged Nigerians to focus more on ideas, competence and policy depth rather than political theatrics in choosing leaders.

He also reflected on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, acknowledging his long-standing role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution since 1999.

According to him, the country now requires renewed leadership energy to tackle current national challenges effectively.

Speaking on Rotimi Amaechi, Showunmi said: “I think Rotimi is running on entitlement and ambition.”

“I have tried very hard to hear him say exciting things, but I have not heard them. That does not mean he cannot,” he added.

On Peter Obi, he acknowledged his political energy and support base but emphasised the need for broader national consensus in leadership choices.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
