The Nigerian Navy on Tuesday distributed educational materials and gifts to more than 500 children in Lagos as part of activities marking its 70th anniversary celebration.

The event, organised by Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) WEY in collaboration with the Naval Air Station and Naval Hospital, brought together children from Navy Town and surrounding communities in Ojo.

Commodore Mohammed Alhassan, Commander, NNS WEY, said the outreach was conducted under the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, to commemorate the Navy’s milestone anniversary.

Alhassan said the initiative also coincided with the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, describing it as part of the Navy’s commitment to child welfare and community development.

He urged the children to remain focused on their education, obey parents and teachers, and speak up when faced with challenges.

“The future of Nigeria lies in these young ones. The package here today may not be too big, but it is a sign that we recognise your importance to society,” he said.

He encouraged them to stay committed to their studies to secure a better future.

Also speaking, Commodore Raphael Ekuma, Commander of the Naval Air Station, Ojo, said the programme formed part of the Navy’s community relations efforts marking its 70th anniversary.

Ekuma said the outreach was designed to align with Children’s Day celebrations while strengthening relations between the Navy and host communities.

He added that the initiative was one of several programmes lined up for the anniversary celebrations.

The event featured health talks, interactive sessions and distribution of educational materials and gifts to the children. (NAN)
