Chinese President Xi Jinping has wrapped up his first visit to North Korea in seven years, saying the talks had strengthened mutual understanding and paved the way for closer bilateral ties.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Xi agreed to expand cooperation in politics, the economy and culture during a summit in Pyongyang, which local media described as opening a new chapter in relations.

The leaders also planted a fir tree at a key political training school for party cadres, symbolising “ever-renewing friendship.”

Both sides committed to closer strategic communication through visits by high-level officials. Kim reaffirmed his support for the “One China principle,” which Beijing interprets as recognising Taiwan as part of China, regardless of changes in the international situation.

China considers Taiwan its territory and has not renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control, while Taipei rejects the claim.

Xi said the summit had deepened and broadened mutual understanding and clarified the direction for future development.(Reuters/NAN)
