A youth advocacy group, One-Forest Youth Initiative, has called for deployment of additional security to Esa-Oke in Osun to prevent possible reprisal attacks following the killing of an alleged cult leader.
The group’s National Coordinator, Comrade Mustapha Abdulrahman, made the call while addressing journalists on Thursday in Abuja.
Abdulrahman urged the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to strengthen security presence in Esa-Oke and neighbouring communities to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
He also called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Ajayi Aderogba, popularly known as “Rogba”, who he alleged was linked to cult-related activities in the area.
According to him, reports circulating on social media alleged that the deceased was a prominent member of a cult group and had been implicated in several violent incidents and cult clashes in Esa-Oke and its environs.
Abdulrahman further alleged that Aderogba had previously been arrested and prosecuted over criminal offences but was later released.
He expressed concern over what he described as attempts to politicise the incident instead of supporting efforts to tackle cultism and other criminal activities.
“We are calling on the security agencies to focus on a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
“There is also an urgent need to reinforce security in Esa-Oke to prevent possible reprisal attacks and protect innocent residents,” he said.
Abdulrahman added that institutions of higher learning should remain centres of academic excellence rather than becoming breeding grounds for cult-related violence.
He urged the Nigeria Police Force to intensify efforts to dismantle cult groups operating across the state and prosecute those responsible for cult-related crimes.
The group also called on all stakeholders to support measures aimed at restoring peace and ensuring the safety of residents in the affected communities. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
