Mr Moyosore Ogunlewe, Chairman, Kosofe Local Government in Lagos State, has urged residents to embrace tree planting as a practical step toward protecting the environment and ensuring a healthier future for generations.

Ogunlewe made the call on Tuesday at the 2026 Lagos State Annual Tree Planting Day in Kosofe, held as part of the statewide campaign with the theme:”Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility”.

He said the annual exercise reflected the state government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience through collective efforts to increase tree cover.

According to him, environmental sustainability requires the active participation of all residents, as government efforts alone cannot adequately address the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation.

“Planting and nurturing trees contribute significantly to cleaner air, reduced flooding, improved biodiversity and a more beautiful and resilient environment.

“I therefore urge residents to cultivate the habit of planting and caring for trees because every tree planted is an investment in the future of Kosofe and Lagos State,” he said.

Also speaking, the council’s Supervisor for Environment, Mr Adekoya Moses, urged schools, religious bodies, market associations, youth groups and community-based organisations to adopt tree planting as a continuous practice, not a one-off event.

He urged residents to support government initiatives aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and improving environmental quality.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that officials of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), members of the council’s executive, community development representatives, traditional leaders, market leaders and other stakeholders participated in the tree planting.

Tree seedlings were planted at designated locations as part of efforts to conserve the environment and strengthen the state’s green infrastructure. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
