The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), RS7 Abuja Zonal Headquarters, says it has commenced a three-day special intervention patrol to intensify enforcement against major traffic offences.
The Niger Sector Commander of FRSC, Corps Commander Aishat Saadu, said this in a statement on Monday in Minna.
Saidu said that the enforcement is against speeding, overloading, route violations, use of mobile phones while driving and unlicensed driving.
She said the operation is code-named “Operation Sauka Lafiya,” (Operation Safe Journey) across its formations in Niger.
She said that public education campaigns would also be conducted at motor parks and other strategic locations to sensitise motorists and passengers on safe road use.
Saadu said the operation, scheduled to run from July 20 to July 22, was aimed at strengthening patrol activities on major highways, improving traffic management and reducing road traffic crashes across the state.
She said the exercise would also ensure the free flow of traffic and reinforce compliance with traffic regulations through sustained enforcement and public enlightenment.
She said that personnel, patrol vehicles, a tow truck, ambulances and other operational equipment have been deployed to critical routes and traffic-prone locations across the state.
The sector commander said the deployment would facilitate prompt rescue services, quick removal of obstructions and enhanced response to road traffic emergencies.
She called on motorists, commercial transport operators, fleet managers and other road users to cooperate with FRSC personnel throughout the operation.
She emphasised that the intervention was aimed at saving lives, preventing avoidable crashes and ensuring that road users reached their destinations safely.
Saadu urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, avoid excessive speeding and dangerous overtaking, obey traffic signs and exercise patience while using the roads.
She further encouraged members of the public to report road crashes, broken-down vehicles and other traffic emergencies through the FRSC toll-free emergency number of 122 or 09139600702 for immediate response.
She said the FRSC remaines committed to ensuring safer roads through sustained enforcement, public education and collaboration with relevant stakeholders, in line with its mandate of creating a safe motoring environment in Nigeria. (NAN) www.nannews.ng
