The National Leader of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dr Chike Okogwu, has called for greater attention to disability inclusion and other national development priorities.
Okogwu made the call in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja while commenting on recent political developments in the country.
He said addressing issues such as economic growth, employment, healthcare, education and social inclusion would further improve the welfare of Nigerians.
According to him, Persons with Disabilities continue to face challenges in accessing employment, healthcare, education, transportation and other public services.
He urged governments at all levels to accelerate the implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act to promote accessibility and inclusion.
Okogwu said public infrastructure, healthcare facilities, educational institutions and digital services should be made more accessible to persons with disabilities.
He added that disability inclusion should be integrated into government planning, budgeting and policy implementation.
The ADC chieftain said his party’s policy proposals prioritised the implementation of disability rights legislation, inclusive education and improved healthcare.
He added that the proposals also sought to promote accessible infrastructure, expand employment opportunities and increase the participation of persons with disabilities in governance.
He expressed the hope that sustained attention to these issues would contribute to national development and improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities and other Nigerians. (NAN)
