The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Executive Council has approved two contracts aimed at securing safe drinking water and protecting critical water infrastructure across the nation’s capital.
The approvals were granted during the Council’s meeting on Tuesday in Abuja, chaired by the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike.
Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the acting General Manager (GM) of the FCT Water Board, Mrs Chinyere Elechi, disclosed that the first approved contract covers the supply of powdered chlorine, specifically High-Test Hypochlorite (HTH), for continuous water treatment.
Elechi explained the vital role of the disinfectant in safeguarding public health across the territory.
“This HTH is a vital disinfectant used in water treatment to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms and ensure that water reaching our consumers is safe for human consumption.
“The absence of this can lead to waterborne diseases like typhoid, cholera, and dysentery.
“We are grateful that the minister has awarded this to make sure the water reaching the populace is safe,” she said.
The acting GM equally said that the council also approved a second memorandum for the renewal of the insurance policy covering the Lower Usman Dam Treatment Plant, the major facility supplying potable water to FCT residents.
Explaining the importance of the insurance cover, the water board chief noted that protecting the facility against unforeseen operational disruptions remains a top priority for the administration.
“As we all know, the Lower Usman Dam Treatment Plant is the place where every FCT resident gets their potable water supply from.
“The plant needs to be insured against negative occurrences. In case of any eventuality, we will not be left stranded,” she added.
Elechi thanked Wike for the approvals, noting that the decisions demonstrate the administration’s commitment to basic infrastructure and the well-being of Abuja residents. (NAN)
