Media specialist Lekan Otufodunrin says Globacom’s new Never Settle for Less campaign captures the life and drive of its Founder, Chief Michael Adenuga Jr.
In an analysis on Globacom’s 23rd anniversary, released on Sunday, Otufodunrin noted that the brand philosophy encapsulated the telecommunications chairman’s lifelong commitment to raising standards across various sectors in Nigeria.
Announced in Lagos, the campaign featured prominent figures including Mai Atafo, Dr Reuben Abati, and Chike, who shared personal stories of resilience and professional breakthrough.
Otufodunrin highlighted that Adenuga’s business trajectory across oil, banking, real estate, and telecommunications serves as a primary lesson in striving for absolute excellence.
Quoting Chief Adenuga on his personal philosophy, the media analyst noted: “Leading the pack is the only worthwhile resolve for the achiever. There is no room for second place.”
Adenuga added: “It is not the mere participant, but the achiever, the winner, the leader who makes the difference that advances the course of humankind.”
Otufodunrin observed that Globacom disrupted the market at launch in 2003 by introducing per-second billing, allowing subscribers to pay strictly for actual call duration.
He added that the firm demonstrated ambition by investing in Glo-1, a 9,800-kilometre submarine fibre-optic cable connecting Nigeria directly to the United Kingdom in 2010.
Recalling early milestones, Otufodunrin stated that Consolidated Oil made history in 1991 as the first indigenous firm to discover commercial oil in Ondo State.
He noted that Adenuga worked as a taxi driver to fund his U.S. university studies before making his first million naira at age 26 in 1979.
He also noted that in commemorating Adenuga on his birthday, President Bola Tinubu praised the Globacom Chairman for his immense contributions to national development, enterprise, and youth empowerment across Africa.
He said that President Tinubu stated: “Mike’s life is an affirmation of the audacity of hope, belief, and vision. From humble beginnings, he rose to become Africa’s finest.”
“His achievements in business are a testament to the immense possibilities of the Nigerian enterprise and an inspiration to the younger generation.”
Otufodunrin referenced French President Emmanuel Macron, who commended Adenuga’s “incomparable spirit of entrepreneur, tenacity and ability to think out of the box” during a 2018 honour.
The analyst noted that Adenuga’s quiet approach to public recognition emphasizes results over rhetoric, earning him widespread respect among business peers and corporate leaders globally.
According to Otufodunrin, t Globacom remains a testament to what Nigerian indigenous capital can achieve when backed by long-term strategic vision and unwavering corporate leadership.
He stressed that the telecom giant continues to invest heavily in national sports, arts, and cultural development, impacting millions of lives beyond basic telecommunications connectivity.
Otufodunrin noted that Adenuga’s story reassured young African entrepreneurs that persistence and high standards remain the ultimate foundation for enduring corporate and personal success.
He observed that the founder’s nickname, “The Bull,” reflected his relentless determination to overcome institutional and regulatory hurdles throughout his decades of business leadership.
“It is not for nothing that Chief Adenuga is called “the Bull” by close associates.
“His accomplishments have proved that, like the bull, he will stop at nothing to make his way through.
“ He is bullish in his business approach, and that has paid off not only for him but also for the good of all who have benefited from his wise investments.
“Though he hardly seeks public acclaim or grants interviews like many other super-wealthy people, his silence is golden, as he prefers his accomplishments to speak for him.’’
Otufodunrin emphasised that Globacom’s brand campaign served as both a reflection of its founder’s history and an invitation for all Nigerians to excel.
He also noted that for Adenuga, his goal was to build a company that could compete, innovate, and expand; with “Never Settle for Less’’ presenting that journey.
“There is a lot to learn from the business acumen of Chief Adenuga, who in many ways exemplifies tenacity in the pursuit of his goal of building a globally acknowledged company like Globacom without making any fuss about it.
“For Adenuga, his goal was to build a telecommunications company that could compete, innovate, and expand.
“ For Globacom, 23 years later, Never Settle for Less has become the slogan through which the company is presenting that journey,’’ he said.(NAN) www.nannews.ng
