An author, Mr Ahmed Alaga, has outlined strategies for helping professionals navigate difficult workplaces, manage office politics and advance their careers.

Alaga gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos, following the launch of his book, Unspoken Rules of Difficult Workplaces.

He said ‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌professionals needed resilience, problem-solving skills and a better understanding of workplace dynamics to overcome toxic bosses and challenging working conditions.

According to him, the book examines challenges posed by difficult bosses, office politics and toxic organisational cultures, while offering practical strategies for navigating such environments.

Alaga said overcoming workplace challenges could help professionals develop competencies needed for career advancement and success in subsequent roles.

“Difficult workplaces are widespread, making it important for employees to acquire the skills to manage challenging situations and recognise opportunities for personal and professional growth.

“Growth is important. Every time you overcome these challenges, you build certain competencies that become valuable to you at the next level, the next job, the next career,” he said.

Alaga said his personal experiences with difficult workplace situations and the lack of guidance early in his career inspired him to write the book.

He said the book was designed to equip young professionals with the knowledge to recognise challenging workplace dynamics, respond strategically and avoid mistakes that could hinder their performance and career progression.

The author identified professionals dealing with difficult or toxic bosses, high-performing employees struggling to achieve career growth and workers seeking better relationships with superiors as target readers.

He said the book could also help leaders reflect on their management styles and offer useful insights to human resource professionals, career coaches and consultants.

Alaga said the book examined self-awareness gaps, challenges associated with competence, ineffective leadership styles and the effects of toxic workplace systems.

He explained that it also explored workplace psychology, strategies for building influence, effective problem-solving and knowing when to confront difficult situations or move on.

“Each chapter concludes with reflective exercises and practical steps to help readers assess their circumstances and apply the lessons to their professional lives,” he said.

On the book’s relevance to Nigeria, Alaga said its principles for navigating difficult workplaces could also help address challenges in the country’s socio-economic environment.

He said individuals could develop valuable competencies by approaching problems with a solution-oriented mindset rather than viewing every challenge as a reason to give up.

“The more problems you solve, the more competency you build,” he said.

Alaga described Nigerians as resilient and adaptable, attributing these qualities partly to their experiences navigating difficult circumstances.

He said identifying problems, assessing one’s contribution to them and developing appropriate solutions were essential to professional development and nation-building.

The author said overcoming challenges required a shift in mindset, urging individuals to examine their circumstances, understand their roles and identify available solutions.

NAN reports that the book combines personal experiences with practical frameworks to help readers understand difficult workplace dynamics, strengthen professional relationships and make informed career decisions. (NAN)
