Director-General of National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Abubakar Sulaiman, has called for responsible governance of artificial intelligence (AI) to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.

Sulaiman made the call on Thursday in Abuja during a public lecture organised by the institute to examine the impact of emerging technologies on Nigeria’s democratic process.

Sulaiman noted that rapid digital transformation was reshaping governance, communication and political participation globally, stressing that technological innovation must be guided by strong regulatory frameworks.

“Artificial intelligence offers immense opportunities, but it also raises concerns about transparency, accountability and the protection of democratic values,” Sulaiman said.

According to him, effective governance frameworks are necessary to ensure technological advancements and strengthen democratic institutions rather than weaken public trust and electoral credibility in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture was entitled: “Artificial Intelligence Governance in Nigeria and the 2027 General Elections.”

NAN also reports that the Guest Speaker. Prof. Ephraim Essien, examined the opportunities and risks associated with the growing use of digital technologies in political communication and electoral systems across modern democratic societies.

“Artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing governance systems, digital media and political engagement across the world,” Essien said.

He stated ed that AI-driven tools could improve electoral processes through better data analysis, stronger information systems and digital platforms that enhance civic participation.

Essien, however, warned that misuse of AI technologies, including deepfakes and automated political messaging, could threaten electoral integrity if not properly regulated.

“The rapid spread of misinformation through AI tools can undermine elections if safeguards and regulatory frameworks are not put in place,” he cautioned.

NAN reports that the participants also recommended strengthening of AI research, expansion of digital literacy programmes and building of technical capacity to manage emerging technologies responsibly.

They also called for development of clear legal safeguards to protect personal data, privacy rights and public confidence in digital governance systems.

NAN also reports that the lecture formed part of NILDS’ ongoing policy dialogue aimed at deepening national understanding of emerging technologies and their implications for governance.

The event attracted scholars, policy makers and stakeholders, including former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, who participated in the discussions.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
