The Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF) has confirmed the death of its president, Chamberlain Dunkwu, at the age of 55.

NAqF Secretary-General, Taiwo Oriss, on Saturday confirmed the passing of Dunkwu, a former Deputy Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dunkwu died at the age of 55, leaving behind a legacy in sports administration and public service.

Oriss described Dunkwu as a passionate advocate for aquatic sports and a committed leader devoted to nurturing young talents and advancing swimming nationwide.

“His leadership brought renewed energy to the federation, with initiatives focused on grassroots development, athlete support and stronger institutional partnerships,” Oriss said.

Dunkwu became President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation in 2023 and prioritised youth development, improved competitions and stronger international engagement.

Before leading the federation, he built a reputation as a sports administrator and supporter of emerging athletes.

He also earned respect in governance circles through his service at the National Assembly.

“Beyond the pool, he contributed to administrative coordination and legislative operations while serving within the leadership structure of the House of Representatives,” Oriss said.

Colleagues, athletes and stakeholders across the sports sector have begun paying tributes to the late federation president.

“His passing leaves a significant void within the Aquatics Federation and the wider Nigerian sporting community.

“He was widely regarded as a driving force behind efforts to elevate aquatic sports to greater heights,” Oriss said.

He said details surrounding Dunkwu’s death and funeral arrangements would be announced later by the federation and the family.

“His legacy in Nigerian sports and public service will long be remembered,” he added. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
