Digital

By Funmilayo Adeyemi

No fewer than three million children have benefitted from the multimedia digital education initiative of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA)

Executive Secretary, UBEC, Aisha Garba, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at the closing ceremony of KOICA Education Project in Nigeria.

Garba said, 420,009 library materials and158,000 Nigerian history books had also been distributed through the initiative which commenced in 2021.

She said the project, designed to address critical gaps in Nigeria’s education system, has greatly redefined the landscape of basic education in Nigeria, through technology, innovative teaching, and inclusive learning.

Specifically, Garba said the project was designed to address the alarming figure of over 10 million out-of-school children and the lack of digital literacy among more than 60 per cent of public primary school teachers.

According to her, under the collaboration, UBEC and KOICA developed Nigeria’s first Smart Education Master Plan and trained over 300 teachers and school leaders.

She added that the collaboration also established six state-of-the-art content development studios, and produced nearly 4,000 digital learning resources in Mathematics and Science.

Garba recalled that when the project began in 2021, they were confronted with sobering realities.

According to her, over 10.1 million school-age children were out-of-school while 70 per cent of those enrolled lacked foundational learning skills.

She added that more than 60 per cent of public primary school teachers did not possess basic digital literacy.

“With the staggering figure and daunting statistics, we saw not just problems, but possibilities.

“We saw possibilities to reimagine learning, bridge the digital divide, and empower our schools and teachers to become catalysts for lasting transformation,’’ she said.

Garba added that, KOICA, through the initiative, supported six of UBEC’s 37 Universal Basic Education Model Smart Schools, but the ripple effect had reached over 8,000 learners in 21 states.

“Although KOICA focus is in six smart schools, the outcome of the project has reached over 8,000 learners in 21 states where the smart schools are fully operational,” she added.

Garba also highlighted recent UBEC reforms that had unlocked access to matching grants for states after 20 years of bottlenecks, enabling more efficient and transparent resource deployment.

The Executive Secretary expressed deep gratitude to KOICA and the Government of the Republic of Korea, affirming UBEC’s commitment to expanding the initiative and ensuring, “no child is left behind.”

“Our vision is a basic education system that is smart, inclusive, and globally competitive, one that builds future-ready citizens,” Garba said.

Earlier, while declaring the event open, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu described the initiative as a model for international cooperation and shared prosperity.

Bagudu, lauded the KOICA initiative for its investment in Nigeria’s basic education, adding that the collaboration had already begun yielding visible results.

“We are grateful to KOICA and the people of South Korea. You have not only built the confidence of our children and parents but also reassured us that Nigeria is not alone on this journey.

“The best way to say thank you is to replicate and sustain this initiative with our own resources,” he said.

The event was attended by top government officials, foreign diplomats, education stakeholders, teachers, and students. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Mpox: 12 cases discovered in Ondo as vaccination commences

Mpox

By Alaba Olusola Oke

No fewer than 12 cases of Mpox have been discovered by the Ondo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (OSPHDA) in eight Local Government Areas of the state.

The Director of Disease Control of OSPHDA, Dr Victor Adefesoye, disclosed this on Monday in Akure at the stakeholders’ meeting on mpox vaccination.

Adefesoye explained that the disease, which was formerly known to be transmitted by monkeys, had been discovered to be transmitted by various animals.

He described the disease as contagious, hence, the need to contain its spread through vaccination in the state.

According to him, the vaccination is safe and will commence on Aug. 11, end on Aug. 21, and will be given to targeted set of people who are above 18 years old and above.

“The essence of this meeting is to help us to inform people in your communities, religious groups, and organisations to take this vaccine.

“The disease is with us in Ondo State, particularly in these local government areas: Akoko South-West, Akoko North-West, Akoko North-East, Owo, Akure South, Akure North, Ondo East and Odigbo.

“This vaccination process is different from previous vaccinations because we know the targeted people and we have contacted them.

“They already have the disease and we will also vaccinate their close relatives, contacts and health workers that have handled them.

“We anticipate that though we have contacted them, some may still feel reluctant to take it. We encourage you as stakeholders to encourage them and be vaccinated,” he said.

The director added that the targeted people would be given two doses of injectable vaccine at different intervals.

He, therefore, enjoined the  people of the state to imbibe the culture of personal and environmental sanitation for a good and healthy society.

Also, the state Immunisation Officer, Mrs Florence Fadiji, said that the disease could be transmitted through contact with infected animals, infected persons and infected things.

Fadiji added that the disease’s symptoms include: body sores, rashes, fever, headache and body weakness.

She stated that the vaccination might have little or no reaction, saying that the vaccination’s reaction could not be compared to burden and effect of the disease.

Similarly, the Permanent Secretary of OSPHDA, Dr Francis Akanbiemu, said that the stakeholders were voices of the people of the state, hence, the need to convince the targeted people to take the vaccine.

Akanbiemu said the vaccination should not be taken lightly but be appreciated by all and sundry for the betterment of the state. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Apollonia Anele, in a statement said the troops also apprehended other suspects, rescued kidnapped victims and recovered assorted arms and ammunition.

Anele said the operations took place between Thursday and Saturday under various commands and formations.

According to her, corpses of three terrorists, including their top commander identified as Fiya, were recovered.

She added that troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, two rocket-propelled grenades, an unexploded ordnance and other combat items.

“A follow-up operation with the Civilian Joint Task Force and Hybrid Force on Aug. 9 led to the discovery of another terrorist corpse.

“They also recovered a QJC 88-barrel gun, an AA gun tripod, 20 rounds of 12.7 x 108mm ammunition, a backpack and a bicycle,” she said.

In Zamfara, Anele said the troops of 1 Brigade Combat Team 2 acted on credible intelligence on Friday about terrorist activities on Gusau–Kaura Namoda road in Unguwar Sariki Musulmi, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.

Obasanjo library accuses EFCC of unlawful invasion

Obasanjo library accuses EFCC of unlawful invasion

Library

By Bukola Adetoye
The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, has berated the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly invading its premises.

The management accused the EFCC of violating the rights of guests during a private event in the early hours of Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that EFCC operatives reportedly stormed the Green Legacy Hotel, located within OOPL, and arrested some persons suspected to be internet fraudsters.

The EFCC operatives carried out the raid during a pool party at the premises of the library.

Reacting to the incident, OOPL management, through Mr Kayode Adeyemi, Special Adviser on Media to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, described it as an invasion of private property.

Adeyemi also described the EFCC’s action as an infringement of corporate rights and a blatant violation of the rights of those who gathered for the event.

He alleged that more than 50 armed men, claiming to be EFCC operatives and led by one “Olapade,” stormed the complex without presenting a warrant.

He further demanded an explanation for these actions and an apology to all affected, including those injured during the chaos allegedly induced by the operatives.

According to him, shots were fired, causing panic and injuries as guests fled the premises.

“This morning, at about 2 a.m., the OOPL premises were invaded by a Gestapo-like gang of over 50 armed men.

“They were shooting guns, threatening to kill people, and claiming to be from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“The invasion, led by one ‘Olapade,’ caused panic and chaos, resulting in serious injuries as participants tried to escape the near carnage.

“On inquiry by phone, ‘Olapade’ told the OOPL Managing Director, Mr Vitalis Ortese, they acted on an intelligence tip about a private event.

“It should be noted that the event had been publicly advertised to members of the public days before.

“This gangster-like action caused terror among residents and guests,” Adeyemi said.

He said the library management would escalate the matter to EFCC leadership, the police, and the Department of State Services (DSS), demanding an explanation and apology.

Adeyemi warned that failure to address the grievances could lead to legal action and calls for sanctions against those responsible.

“Management reiterates that this EFCC action is a clear invasion of private property and a blatant violation of OOPL’s rights as corporate citizens.

“Investigations into the invasion have commenced, and the matter will be pursued with the EFCC, police, and Department of State Security (DSS),” he added. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Okwaraji foundation unveils schools football tournament

Okwaraji foundation unveils schools football tournament

Okwaraji

By Emmanuel Afonne

The Samuel Okwaraji Foundation has unveiled an annual U-16 football competition for secondary schools in memory of late Super Eagles midfielder, Samuel Okwaraji.

Secretary of the foundation, Chidozie Achonwa, revealed this on Sunday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Achonwa said the foundation’s president, Patrick Okwaraji — eldest brother of the late footballer — initiated the event to preserve Okwaraji’s legacy and support grassroots football.

“Nigerians see late Okwaraji as a football hero who died in active service,” Achonwa said.

He noted that the competition would also help reach families of former athletes neglected by stakeholders, including government.

According to him, the tournament will be held in partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation, National Sports Commission, Senate and House Committees on Sports, and SWAN.

“We developed the idea and presented it to the NFF. They deliberated and approved it, and we are grateful for their support,” he said.

He added the tournament would offer a platform for talented youths, particularly those lacking exposure, to showcase their skills.

“People across and beyond Nigeria will see these young players, thanks to modern information technology,” Achonwa added.

He said football unites Nigerians, reducing crime, as even criminals pause to watch national matches.

“When a boy from Zamfara plays against another from Imo, friendship can begin,” he said.

Achonwa stressed that Nigeria could gain much by developing grassroots football under the foundation’s initiative.

The competition will begin at state level, where one school will qualify from each of the 36 states and the FCT.

It will then move to zonal eliminations before the final event, which will be held in either Lagos or Abuja.

“This will promote national unity and offer young people a platform to market themselves,” Achonwa explained.

He added that national and club coaches would attend the event to scout fresh talent.

“Each geopolitical zone will produce two schools, making 12 finalists for the championship,” he said.

Before kick-off, a Samuel Okwaraji Memorial Lecture will be held to enlighten participants.

“The lecture will teach patriotism and what it means to serve and die for one’s country,” Achonwa stated.

However, he revealed that funding remains the foundation’s biggest challenge.

He appealed for support from government, corporate, and public bodies to honour Okwaraji’s sacrifice.

“This competition is long overdue due to sponsorship delays, but better late than never,” he said.

The exact date is yet to be announced, pending final discussions with the Sports Commission and other partners. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Traditional rulers, vital partners in community security – I-G

Traditional rulers, vital partners in community security – I-G

Community
By Emmanuel Afonne
The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Kayode Egbetokun, has highlighted the importance of traditional rulers in safeguarding communities in the country.
Egbetokun who was represented by Mr Victor Olaiya, the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police, in charge of Zone 7, said this at the opening of a three-day security training for community leaders on Tuesday in Abuja.
The training was organised specially for traditional rulers, local government administrators, and critical grassroots security stakeholders to strategise on the best way to tackle insecurity in local communities.
It was organised by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in collaboration with the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence as well as the Royal Gate International Institute for Security Studies and Leadership Advancement.
Egbetokun said the traditional institution must be seriously engaged to be able to confront the insecurity challenges militating against many communities in the country.
“Security cannot be compromised; security and economic development are like Siamese twins, they go together.
“Without security there cannot be development. This laudable commitment reflects the commitment of all stakeholders in enhancing community safety and deepening collaboration at grassroots level.
“The Nigeria Police believe that security is a collective responsibility and the active engagement of traditional institutions, local authorities and community stakeholders is vital in achieving sustainable peace and security across the country.
“Police will continue to support initiatives that promote security and strengthen trust between the police and the communities we serve,” Egbetokun said.
The Convener/Facilitator of the training, Prince Celestine Ekwe, said traditional institutions were targeted because of the important role traditional rulers and local government chairmen play in their localities.
“There is no day you will not hear about killings in the country and we should ask ourselves, for how long will this continue.
“The fact remains that if we fail to do something to stop these killings it will continue to go on, and nobody knows who will be the next.
“It is on this note that we should seek a lasting solution to this menace, and this training is aimed at proffering solutions to insecurity in our communities,” Ekwe said.

The Senate President, Mr Godswill Akpabio, who was represented by Sen. Muntari Dandutse, said that the National Assembly recognised the important role of the traditional rulers, local government chairmen, and community stakeholders, in maintaining peace and security in various communities.
“Your efforts are crucial in promoting stability and fostering safety among citizens. This training is supposed to enhance security and equip local authorities with skills to address security challenges.
“This is also expected to promote unity among security stakeholders and fashion strategy on the best way to respond and tackle insecurity in the country,” Akpabio said.
He said the Senate would support effective budgeting to improve security in the country.
The Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Olufemi Peters, said the tripartite engagement was necessary for the development and security of the nation.
Peters who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, NOUN, Prof. Isaac Butswat, said the institution was involved in the training because security had become everybody’s business.

Earlier, Malam Isa Yuguda, the Pro Chancellor of NOUN, and former Governor of Bauchi State, who delivered the keynote address, said it was high time the insecurity bedevilling the country was nipped in the bud.
Yuguda said the traditional rulers and local government chairmen can bring lasting solutions to the insecurity challenges in various communities if they synergise. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

NAF airstrikes hit terrorists’ hideouts on Mandara mountain, kills scores

NAF airstrikes hit terrorists’ hideouts on Mandara mountain, kills scores

Terrorists
By Sumaila Ogbaje

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), under Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), on Sunday, launched precision air strikes against key terrorist strongholds nestled in the Mandara Mountains, located in Borno.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Mandara mountains are a rugged volcanic mountain range located on the northeastern border of Nigeria and northern Cameroon.

The high-profile targets, Wa Jahode and Loghpere, the NAF said have long served as fortified enclaves for the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) faction of Boko Haram.

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, on Monday in Abuja.

Ejodame said the locations, known for their rugged mountain-covered terrain along Nigeria’s border with Cameroon had recently witnessed increased terrorists activity, including reports of logistics build-up and presence of senior JAS Commanders.

He said the strikes followed confirmatory Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance missions revealing clusters of structures fitted with solar panels, black flags, and fortified compounds.

This, according to him, was a clear signs of insurgent resurgence and preparations for coordinated attacks.

“In response, NAF strike aircraft executed a series of well-coordinated air interdictions, targeting and destroying high-value terrorist infrastructure including logistics warehouses, command centres, and defensive shelters.

“Several terrorists were neutralised in the operation, effectively disrupting their supply chain and diminishing their capability to sustain further offensives.

“The Nigerian Air Force remains resolute to sustain ongoing onslaught against terrorists and restore lasting peace to all troubled regions across the Country,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
