A Shari’a Court sitting at Rigasa, Kaduna, on Monday ordered one Bilkisu Abdullahi, a nursing mother,  to breastfeed her two-month- old daughter for 20 months in order to stave off the return of dowry she collected from her estranged husband.

The Judge, Malam Salisu Abubakar-Tureta, made the ruling after Bilkisu prayed the court to dissolve her marriage to Abdullahi Adamu through Khul’I,  otherwise known as redemption.

Khul’i is a form of divorce where a wife returns the dowry she collected from the husband.

The complainant, who was represented by her counsel Sagir Salisu, told the court that she received N80,000 as dowry from the defendant but wants to breastfeed their daughter for 20 months in place of that money.

The defendant was not in court and did not send any representative or letter to state the reasons for his absence after being served personally.

The judge said that the court would proceed with the hearing in accordance with Order 9, Rule 3 of the Shari’a Civil Procedure Rules.

“I hereby dissolve the union between Abdullahi Adamu and Bilkisu Adamu through Khul’I and she will breastfeed her daughter for 20 months.

“Anyone who is not okay with the ruling can appeal to the Upper Shari’a Court within 30 days“, the judge ruled. (NAN)

The National Mathematical Centre (NMC) says it has trained no fewer than 100 participants in a foundation postgraduate course in `real analysis’, a branch of pure mathematics, to enhance learning of mathematics among students.

Dr James Ajie, the Acting Coordinator, Mathematics Programme, NMC disclosed that at the virtual training at Sheda, Kwali Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, on Monday.

He said that the four-day training was targeted at mathematics graduates.

Ajie also said that although the programme was for graduates of mathematics, who intended to further their studies in mathematics, undergraduate students could equally benefit from it.

He further said that the training was part of the center’s agenda to promote effective teaching and learning of the course among students and lecturers.

According to him, real analysis was a pure mathematics course, that is fundamental to all mathematicians; as every graduate of mathematics was supposed to have knowledge of real analysis.

“Any user of mathematics should also have some knowledge of real analysis because for someone to have confidence that the result he/she got is right you are supposed to do some analysis.’’

Ajie noted that the programme was also aimed to checking the falling standard of mathematics education across the country, as well as enhance the performance of both students and lectures.

The acting coordinator further explained that as a subject, mathematics lacked teachers and lecturers in most schools and universities, while urging governments, at all levels, to encourage the teaching of the subject, at all levels for the development of the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that over 100 participants had benefited from the programme, comprising undergraduates, graduates, postgraduates and lecturers of mathematics, from across the country and beyond, since it began.(NAN)

A Correspondent of NAN who went round Enugu metropolis on Monday, reports that there were normal vehicular and human movements on major roads, while some traders, said they had fully returned to commence their regular businesses for the year.

Mr Uche Nnamdi, a trader, who deals on women’s wears at Ogbete Main Market, explained that he decided to open his shop for business on time due to COVID-19 second lockdown rumour.

“I returned early this year to open my shop for business due to the second COVID-19 lockdown that I am hearing,” Nnamdi said.

Mrs Eugenia Ani, another trader at Garki Market, said she had to opened for business earlier, following her inability to make much profit from her cosmetics’ business as a result of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Ani added that she started early because she also needed to pay for her children’s school fees in this month.

“I opened early this year because of COVID-19 pandemic which made many traders to remain indoors for several months last year and my children’s school fees will be paid this January.

“In fact, every expenditure I make in my family is from this my shop,” she said.

Also, a bank customer in one of the commercial banks, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she came to pay for her children’s school fees to avoid rush when schools resume.

“This is the best time to pay for children’s fees because customers are not many in banks now, when compared to the population of customers expected by next week,” she said.

From just two National Reference Laboratories, Nigeria now has over 100 public and private laboratories across all the states for the testing of COVID-19.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who disclosed this at a media briefing on Monday in Lagos, said centres were also built in collaboration with states and the private sector to isolate and treat cases of COVID-19.

He said the Federal Government, through the Sustainable Production Pillar of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, had been encouraging local manufacturing companies to embark on the production of consumables.

The minister said local manufacturing companies were specifically encouraged to embark on production of face masks, ventilators, hand sanitisers and face shields.

To mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the economy across all levels, the minister said the government unveiled the Economic Sustainability Plan to support families, small and medium enterprises and the manufacturing sector among others.

He said with the resurgence of the pandemic, President Muhammadu Buhari had extended the mandate of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 until the end of March, 2021.

He said the extension of the PTF mandate was as a result of the new surge in the number of cases of infected persons and the bid for vaccines.

The minister, who is also a member of PTF, gave an assurance of the administration’s untiring efforts to tame the pandemic and
protect Nigerians.

Mohammed recalled that the Federal Government had launched an onslaught against the novel coronavirus which was imported into the country in February 2020.

He said the government mobilised all sectors and segments of the country for a sectoral approach to interrupt the transmission of the virus and curtail mortality.

Mohammed said the approach included expanding health infrastructure, building the capacity of health workers and mounting aggressive public sensitisation and community mobilisation against the spread of the virus.

To mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the economy, the minister said the Federal Government unveiled the Economic Sustainability Plan to support families, small and medium enterprises and the manufacturing sector among others.

He said the country had so far performed creditably well in the fight against COVID-19 through the deployment of resources, mobilisation and training of manpower and expansion of health infrastructure.

Mohammed enjoined Nigerians to strictly abide by all COVID-19 protocols to prevent spread of the pandemic.

He said the media briefing, earlier scheduled for Dec. 29, 2020, was shifted in order for him not to breach the COVID-19 protocols.

“Many of you may not be aware that I represented Mr President at the inauguration of President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré of Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou on Dec. 28, 2020.

“I returned to Nigeria the same day, but had to observe the mandatory seven-day quarantine which expired yesterday, Jan. 3, 2021,” he said.

He reiterated that while the Federal Government was not contemplating another lockdown because of possible effects on the economy, Nigerians should take responsibility in preventing the second wave of the pandemic. (NAN)

OPEC sees oil outlook for 1st half of 2021 full of downside risks

183 total views today

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) sees plenty of downside risks for oil markets in the first half of 2021, Mohammad Barkindo, its Secretary-General said on Sunday.

Barkindo’s remark is coming a day before meeting allies, led by Russia, to discuss output levels for February.

“Amid the hopeful signs, the outlook for the first half of 2021 is very mixed and there are still many downside risks to juggle,’’ he said.

He was speaking at a meeting of experts of OPEC and allies, a group known as OPEC+, according to remarks published by OPEC.

OPEC+ will meet on Monday.

In December, OPEC+ decided to increase production by 0.5 million bpd from January as part of the two million bpd gradual rise this year but some members have questioned the need for a further boost due to spreading coronavirus infections.

“Given fundamentals are weakening, it would be prudent for OPEC+ to hold output steady and there is a preference among some of the biggest producers to hold production flat,’’ said Amrita Sen, co-founder of Energy Aspects think-tank.

OPEC’s leader, Saudi Arabia, has suggested a more cautious approach during previous meetings while OPEC member the United Arab Emirates and non-OPEC Russia have said they prefer a speedier increase.

“Curbs on social and economic activity remain in place in a number of countries, and there is concern about the emergence of a pernicious new strain of the virus,’’ Barkindo remarked.

He said the global economy could strongly rebound in the second half of 2021 but sectors such as travel, tourism, leisure and hospitality could take years to reach pre-virus levels.

OPEC+ was forced to cut production by a record amount in 2020 as global lockdown measures hammered fuel demand.

OPEC+ first cut output by 9.7 million bpd, then eased cuts to 7.7 million and ultimately to 7.2 million from January.

Barkindo said OPEC now expected global oil demand to be led by developing countries and to rise to 95.9 million bpd in 2021, or by 5.9 million bpd from 2020.

This is as the global economy is forecast to grow by 4.4 per cent.

Even though the development of coronavirus vaccines have sparked market optimism, the rise in demand would still fail to bring consumption to pre-pandemic levels of around 100 million bpd.

OPEC’s latest December forecast was lower than the previous forecast of a 6.25 million bpd rise in 2021 because of the lingering impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Brent oil prices ended 2020 above $50 per barrel – more than a fifth down year-on-year but more than doubling from April’s lows as producers cut output and as the U.S. and the European Union approved trillions in stimulus packages. (Reuters/NAN)
