Kim calls U.S. ‘biggest enemy,’ vows to continue nuclear development

44 total views today

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has called the United States (U.S) the “biggest enemy” of his country, threatening to continue advancing its nuclear capabilities, state media said Saturday.

Kim also said Washington’s policy against Pyongyang would not change regardless of who was in the White House, adding that an end to its hostile stance would likely be the key to future relations between the two countries, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Kim made the remarks reporting to the eighth congress of the ruling Workers’ Party currently under way in Pyongyang, the North’s first reference to transition of power in Washington since Joe Biden’s election as U.S. president in November.

They also came days before Biden’s inauguration slated for Jan. 20., which experts see as aimed at pressuring the incoming administration in Washington.

“The report said that the key to the establishment of new North Korea-U.S. relations is the withdrawal of the U.S.’ hostile North Korea policy,” KCNA said, declaring an “eye for an eye” principle against Washington.

“Our external political activities going forward should be focused on suppressing and subduing the U.S., the basic obstacle, biggest enemy against our revolutionary development,” KCNA said.

Kim has held three meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump, but denuclearization talks have made little progress since their no-deal summit in Hanoi in 2019.

Biden earlier said that he would not meet the North Korean leader without preconditions, vowing to pursue “principled” diplomacy on Pyongyang. He has called Kim a “thug” and “dictator,” denouncing Trump for giving legitimacy to Kim through summits.

Referring to the summits with Trump, Kim said the U.S. hostile policy has worsened despite the North’s “efforts” and “maximum patience” to reduce tensions in the region.

Kim rolled out a series of goals to boost the North’s military power, calling for improvement in missiles’ strike capabilities targeting objects in the range of 15,000 kilometers, apparently intended to be capable of reaching the mainland U.S., and minimisation of nuclear weapons.

The North also boasted of a new nuclear-powered submarine, saying that it has completed the research design and it is in the stage of final examination.

Other military projects ordered by Kim include the development of tactical nuclear weapons, ground or submarine-launched solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), the introduction of hypersonic aircraft and a military surveillance satellite.

“The reality shows that we need to strengthen the national defense capabilities without a moment of hesitation to deter the United States’ nuclear threats and to bring peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula,” KCNA said.

“The geopolitical features of our state called for pushing ahead with the already-started building of the nuclear force without interruption for the welfare of the people, destiny of the revolution, existence and independent development of the state,” it said.

Still, the North Korean leader reaffirmed that Pyongyang would not use its nuclear arsenal unless “hostile forces” attempt to attack with nuclear weapons.

Washington has yet to respond to the North’s announcement.

With regard to relations with South Korea, Kim appeared to have left room for improvement in the currently chilled ties, saying things could return to three years ago when a peace mood was created, “at any time” but emphasized that it all depends on South Korea’s attitude.

“The report made a stern warning that we will have no choice but to treat the South differently if it continues to push us to the corner citing ‘provocations,’” it said.

Inter-Korean relations have remained stalled since the Hanoi summit as sanctions stand in the way of cross-border exchanges and cooperation.

The ties chilled further last year, as North Korea blew up an inter-Korean joint liaison office in anger over anti-Pyongyang leafleting in June and killed a South Korean fisheries official drifting near its western sea border in September.

North Korea has not responded to Seoul’s offers for talks and cooperative projects, while focusing on warding off an outbreak of the coronavirus on its soil by sealing its border and toughening quarantine measures.

Kim said such projects on “antivirus, humanitarian cooperation (and) individual trips” are all “nonessential” issues, calling for a halt to the combined exercises between South Korea and the United States.

During the congress, Kim also unveiled a new economic development plan for the next five years, which centers around self-reliance and self-sufficiency.

North Korea will focus its investment in the metal and chemical industries, among others, while strengthening the technological base for the agricultural sector, it said.

“The core theme of the new five-year national economic development plan is still self-reliance and self-sufficiency,” the report said.

This week’s congress, the first in nearly five years, came as North Korea has been faced with a triple whammy of the fallout of back-to-back typhoons in the summer, a protracted border closure due to the coronavirus pandemic and global sanctions on its economy.

Opening the event on Tuesday, Kim admitted the failure to meet the country’s previous five-year development goals, describing the past few years as a period of “unprecedented, worst-ever trials.”

KCNA said that a fifth-day session was to be held Saturday.

It is still unclear for how many days the congress will continue as the North has not made public the exact schedule.

The previous congress in 2016 was held for four days. (Yonhap/NAN)

Australia on high alert after overseas travellers bring new COVID-19 strains

Australia’s health officials said, on Saturday, they are on high alert after cases of highly transmissible new variants of the coronavirus, discovered in Britain and South Africa, have made it into the country.

Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, on Saturday went into a three-day strict lockdown after the discovery of a virulent strain of the virus that causes COVID-19, linked to Britain.

A variant that emerged in South Africa was found in Sydney, Australia’s largest city, in a hotel quarantine.

Australia has been more successful than most advanced economies in managing the pandemic, with total infections at around 28,600 and 909 deaths, while each state has, at some point, recorded zero COVID-19 transmissions.

But given the new variants, the government on Friday cut the number of travellers from overseas and required negative COVID-19 tests from those boarding planes and more testing at local quarantine facilities.

“So long as people are travelling, the risk of the virus seeping into the community is already there,’’ New South Wales Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, told a news conference.

“Anything we can do to reduce that risk is really important, especially now when we understand what these strains are doing, and all the experts advise in due course that these mutated strains will become the dominant strain.’’

Australia closed its borders in March but has been allowing a limited number of Australians to return, putting them into a two-week mandatory hotel quarantine upon arrival.

New South Wales, the largest state, reported one new community transmitted case on Saturday, as a three-week lockdown is set to end for about a quarter million people in Sydney’s north after an outbreak there in December.

Queensland, where a case of the Britain-linked variant was recorded last week, reported no new cases.

But officials said that they could not rule out extending the three-day lockdown if more cases emerge.

“This is because of the new variant and because it is the first time this new variant has been out in a community anywhere in the country,’’ said Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young. (Reuters/NAN)

10 newborn babies die in Indian hospital fire

Ten newborn babies died on Saturday in a fire at a state-run hospital in western India, officials said.

There were 17 infants in the unit for sick newborn babies when the fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday at the Bhandara District General Hospital in Maharashtra state.

Seven infants died due to smoke suffocation, and three from burn injuries, Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope told reporters.

Seven babies were rescued by the nurses and ward staff.

All the infants were aged between a few days and three months, Bhandara district health official Prashant Uike said.

The government has ordered a probe into the incident and a safety audit of all neonatal care units in the state.

Initial reports indicated that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit in one of the incubators, Tope said.

“The staff said the ward quickly filled with lots of black smoke,” the minister added.

Legal requirements for a post-mortem had been waived and the bodies of the children handed to their families, Tope added.

Families of the victims would be given compensation of 500,000 rupees (about 6,814 dollars) each. (dpa/NAN)

Twitter bans Trump’s account permanently

Twitter on Friday evening wielded the big stick against outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump, suspending his account permanently.

Announcing this in a blog post, the company said it took the decision “due to the risk of further incitement of violence’’.

“After a close review of recent tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them, we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.

“In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action.

“Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly.

“It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open.

“However, we made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules entirely and cannot use Twitter to incite violence among other things.

“We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement,’’ Twitter said.

The company cited two tweets by the president earlier on Friday that formed the basis of its decision.

In the first post, the president said: “The 75,000,000 great American Patriots, who voted for me, America First and Make America Great Again, will have a Giant Voice long into the future.

“They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!’’

Shortly thereafter Trump tweeted again: “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the inauguration on January 20th’’.

Citing Wednesday’s attack by Trump supporters on the Capitol Hill, the company said the two tweets must be read in the context in which his comments could be used to incite violence.

“President Trump’s statement that he will not be attending the inauguration is being received by a number of his supporters as further confirmation that the election was not legitimate.

“It is seen as him disavowing his previous claim made via two tweets (1, 2) by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Dan Scavino, that there would be an “orderly transition” on Jan. 20.

“The second tweet may also serve as an encouragement to those potentially considering violent acts that the inauguration would be a ‘safe’ target, as he will not be attending,’’ it added.

Twitter had earlier suspended Trump’s account for 12 hours and threatened to ban the account permanently if he violated its rules any further. (NAN)

Governors to join Buhari, Osinbajo to take COVID-19 vaccine on live TV

The governors of Nigeria’s 36 states have agreed to take the COVID-19 vaccine on live television to help drive acceptance among the populace.

The Chairman of the Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum, Dr Kayode Fayemi, made this known on Friday in Abuja when he fielded questions from State House Correspondents at the end of a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We too will like to demonstrate to our citizens that we believe that vaccines will work.

“The Governors’ Forum managed the polio vaccines administration in the country and we have garnered a lot of experience.

“We have worked with the Primary Healthcare Development Agency and the Federal Ministry of Health.

“We will be happy to work with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Presidential Task Force (PTF) and the Primary Healthcare Development Agency on this as well.

“So, we would take a lead as well in our various states,” said Fayemi, who is also the Governor of Ekiti.

Faisal Shuaib, the Executive Director of National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), at the PTF briefing on COVID-19 on Thursday in Abuja, said the President , Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and other prominent Nigerians had expressed readiness to receive the vaccine on live television.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria intends to get 42 million COVID-19 vaccines to cover one-fifth of its population through the global COVAX scheme.

The initial vaccines would come as part of Nigeria’s plan to inoculate 40 per cent of the population in 2021 and another 30 per cent in 2022 with 100,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine expected to arrive in the country by the end of January 2021.

Fayemi commended the PTF on COVID-19 for resolving to use the president and the vice president as the publicity vehicles for reassuring those who might have doubts about the vaccines.

“But the good thing is that Mr President has agreed with me that he would convey to the PTF the necessity of using other influencers.

“Maybe the Chief Imams, the Bishops, top musicians and our sports personalities.

“The more of such people are seen taking the vaccines, the more the likelihood of resistance break down in our various localities,” Fayemi said.

The governor, who said that he discussed the issue of vaccine management with the president, stressed the urgent need for Nigeria to ramp up the manufacturing of vaccines locally.

He also urged the Federal Government to accelerate its partnership with May & Baker to produce the COVID-19 vaccines locally to reduce cost and ensure quick delivery.

“There is nothing as good as having the ability to manufacture our own vaccines locally.

“It is important for the Federal Government to really accelerate so that we can produce the vaccines here in Nigeria and not be dependent on what is coming from other parts,” Fayemi said. (NAN)

EndSARS: Man demands N50m compensation for being unlawfully paraded by police

A 47-year-old man, Anthony Ogbevon, on Friday, approached the Edo Judicial Panel of Inquiry for Victims of SARS and Related Abuses in Benin, seeking financial compensation of N50 million.

In seeking for the compensation, Ogbevon alleged that he was wrongly paraded as a criminal suspect by the Police on June 8, 2020.

Narrating his ordeal,  the petitioner, said he was arrested and dragged to the police station by some vigilante group on the allegation that he was a kidnapper because he refused to grant them their request.

He said that when the police arrived, instead of investigating the said allegation, he was arrested, detained, and paraded alongside other criminal suspects, just as his vehicle was also impounded by the police.

“It is a case of unlawful seizure of my vehicle. After the arrest, the police did not wait to investigate before they paraded me as a kidnapper and an armed robber.

“I was arrested on Sunday, June 7, 2020. On Monday, June 8, I  was one of those paraded at the police headquarters as an armed robber and a kidnapper. After that, I was thrown back into the cell.

“On Tuesday, after some hours, they took my statement before going to the scene of the crime in Idu village at Upper Sakponba, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government of the state.

“At the end of the day, the recommendation of the Investigating Police Officer, (IPO) clearly vindicated me that I was accused falsely by the so-called vigilante in that village, because I was going to my own village to see my aged mother and my farm.

“They begged me to help them take kidnapped victims to Benin, which I refused, because I was going to my village.

“When I was coming back, I picked a teacher in my village and seven seasonal Hausa farmers.

“When I got back to Idu village on my way back, the same vigilante said I disobeyed their chairman. Consequently,  they started beating me, dragged me out, collected my N12,500 and said, I was carrying kidnappers.

“They dragged my passengers out and started beating them, except the teacher.

“At the end of the day, they called the police that they have arrested armed robbers and kidnappers. We were at the police headquarters until 7p.m.

“The IPO, after his investigation, said I was falsely accused because of malice and that I should be considered for bail.

“They charged me to court, and I was  taken to court along with others in my car on June 18, 2020. I remained in the Correctional Centre until the DPP advice came that I had no case to answer.

“When I came out, I demanded for my vehicle, they refused to give it to me, saying that the court didn’t order that it should be released,” Ogbevon said.

He said he decided to approach the panel for justice.

“We are demanding for N50 million as compensation and consequential order that the vehicle should be released to me,” he said.

However, when the location of the vehicle turned into a debate, Chairman of the panel, Justice Ada Ehigiamusoe (rtd) sent some of the members to the state police command to ascertain whether it was still there or not as claimed by the petitioner.

This was when the police counsel claimed ignorance of the whereabouts of the impounded vehicle.

Ehigiamusoe adjourned sitting until Monday, Jan. 11. (NAN)

Lifestyle coach raises concern over lack of etiquette among young people

An Etiquette Life Coach and Fashion Entrepreneur, Etienying Akpanusong has expressed concerns over lack of etiquette among some teenagers and young adults.

Akpanusong who spoke during a virtual ‘Book Taste’ event held to mark her 33rd birthday, also announced her upcoming book titled: ‘My Etiquette and I’.

“I think times have evolved, etiquette is commonsensical and I will not need to write a book on it if common sense is common as it should be.

“Parents of today are not in charge of their children as they should be or used to be in the past decade.

“They seem to be so busy these days that they do not have the time to invest and spend with their children to guide them in the right path of life.

“And there is a stage a child gets to, you cannot influence them anymore,” she said.

Akpanusong expressed optimism that the book would help its readers maneuver their ways from social, formal manners and social media.

She equated etiquette to good manners that required people to be respectful, considerate of others and desisting from actions which could hurt them.

Addressing the loss of etiquette among youths, she attributed it to `evolving times factor’.

Akpanusong noted that beyond helping people cultivate good social manners, the book would open up opportunities and doors to places they could only imagine.

“My Etiquette and I is a manual to prepare us to set ourselves up for opportunities when they present themselves,” she added.

According to her, the book is targeted at teenagers, young adults and adults.

She added that etiquette differed from culture to culture globally which provided tips on how to adapt in such circumstances.

“A section on international protocol explains the broad aspects of etiquette. The onus is on you to fortify yourself on the culture you find yourself and then comply.

“What you deem right in your environment will not be applicable to others, so you prepare yourself to fit in,” she said.

Akpanusong said she began her etiquette life coach during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) days where she ran a PET project that trained over 500 youths.

She further deployed her social media platforms to start her personal coaching etiquette and had them also published on print media.

She further said that it took her three years to write the book, adding that it comprised three chapters, which focused on Formal Protocols, General Etiquette and Social Skills. (NAN)

Power struggle leaves UN rights body without leader

42 total views today

Russia and China have opposed a candidate from Fiji seen as a staunch human rights defender to lead the top U.N. rights body, diplomats and observers say, creating a deadlock just as Washington may seek to rejoin the forum it quit in 2018.

The Human Rights Council presidency rotates annually between regions and is usually agreed by consensus, with any contests typically resolved quickly and cordially, diplomats say.

The impasse means the council, the only intergovernmental global body to promote and protect human rights worldwide, is set to resume work in Geneva next week with no leader for the first time in its 15-year history.

While its decisions are not legally binding, they carry political weight and can authorise probes into violations.

The infighting points to a high-stakes game where powers are seeking to pre-emptively counter future influence of the United States, which could rejoin the body under President-elect Joe Biden, Marc Limon of the Universal Rights Group think-tank said.

“Neither China nor Russia want a human rights-friendly country to hold the presidency in a year where the U.S. will probably re-engage with the council,” he said.

Russia, China and Saudi Arabia — sometimes acting through proxies — have opposed the selection of Fiji’s ambassador, Nazhat Shameem Khan, or thrown their weight behind other last-minute candidates, observers and two diplomats said.

“It’s understood that Saudi Arabia, China and Russia were all supportive of a Bahraini candidacy and opposed to a Fijian candidacy,” said Phil Lynch, director of the International Service for Human Rights, citing Fiji’s record, with Khan backing probes into abuses in Belarus and Yemen last year.

The NGO is accredited to the council and takes part in debates.

A Chinese diplomat said on Friday he would be “happy to see any of these candidates as president”.

The diplomatic missions for Fiji, Russia and Saudi Arabia did not respond to requests for comment.

Khan has not stepped aside and alternative candidates from Bahrain and Uzbekistan put forward since December have also faced opposition, diplomats said.

“This mess potentially strengthens those voices that argue HRC is anti-democratic, dysfunctional etc, and U.S. should not re-engage (or insist on big reforms as price for doing so),” said the International Crisis Group’s Richard Gowan.

A review that could prompt reforms of the forum is pending.

Currently, members have to be elected onto the 47-member council to vote in it – but that may be one of the subjects considered in any reform. China and Russia both return to the council this year.

The council president has limited powers although some say the role has become increasingly political.

The president does, however, appoint independent experts, such as the one who led an inquiry into the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Attempts by Oman, last year’s Asia-Pacific group coordinator, to resolve the matter via secret ballot hit Qatari opposition, creating a deadlock one diplomat called “a mess”.

One way to resolve the impasse might be a vote at the council next week, diplomats say. (Reuters/NAN)

Ondo Govt. bans trading activities on roads in Akure

By Muftau Ogunyemi

Ondo State Government has placed a total ban on trading activities on traffic lanes, pedestrian paths and walkways on major market corridors in Akure, the state capital.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Donald Ojogo, announced this in a statement on Friday in Akure.

Ojogo said the ban followed the setting up of the Committee on Waste Management and in its bid to instill sanity, especially in Akure.

According to him, the ban also includes artisans such as vulcanizers whose activities impede free flow of vehicular traffic, especially on the market corridors.

“Traders and artisans, who encroached on the main road and walkways in Arakale Market and Oja Oba on Oba Adesida road, Akure, are directed to vacate such unauthorised trading spots with effect from Jan. 11.

“This directive becomes pertinent in view of the abuse and brazen disregard to the status of Akure, the state capital.

“It is particularly, a major source of concern that vehicular and pedestrian traffic now contend for space amid trading activities on same spots.

“In order for the directive to be fully obeyed, the state’s Special Task Force shall, beginning from Jan. 11, swing into action for effective enforcement and compliance,” he said.

According to the commissioner, the move is in the interest of all residents, as the beauty or otherwise of the state capital speaks volume of our values as a people.

“It is, therefore, necessary for all concerned to show a high level of understanding for the general good of all,” Ojogo said.(NAN)

Para-badminton to feature in National Sports Festival in Edo

The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has approved Para-Badminton  to be featured at the forthcoming National Sports Festival scheduled for Edo State, later this month.

The National Coordinator of Nigeria Para-Badminton, Sam Ekeoma, who disclosed this on Friday, in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the approval was for it to feature as a demonstration sport at the festival.

Ekeoma said efforts were underway to ensure states embraced the sport, leading to the introduction of a national league.

“The Ministry of Sports has approved that para-badminton will be a demonstration sport at the National Sports Festival, in Edo State, and once the game is demonstrated at the National Sports Festival, other things will follow.

“And because there are about 15 medals to win in para-badminton, many states will embrace it.

“Para-Badminton has been accepted by Nigerians, the Federal Government and the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN) has included para-badminton as one of the games Nigeria will feature in at the Paralympics, if our athlete qualifies,” Ekeoma said.

According to him, a Nigerian, Bello Rafiu Oyebanji, from Kwara State, currently the African para-badminton champion, was already on the verge of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Ekeoma also said that Bello, the best player in Africa in Standing Lower for Men (SL4), qualified for the 2020 Brazil International Para-Badminton Championship and Spanish International Para-Badminton championships, but was hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic as both countries cancelled the championships.

The coordinator further said that Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu, wife of the Abia State Governor had, in December 2020, promised to sponsor a para badminton championship in April 2021, as part of efforts to develop the sport in the country.

“The board of Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), led by its president, visited the wife of Abia State Governor in December during which she assured that she will be sponsoring an annual para-badminton championship beginning from April this year.

“She said it will be an annual event. She also donated a Space bus to para-badminton to ease the movement of players in the country, because we have been active since 2014,” Ekeoma added. (NAN)
