The Federal Government has inaugurated a committee to ensure strong implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to strengthen trade and economic growth.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, while inaugurating the AfCFTA Central Coordination Committee, in Abuja on Tuesday, said that the committee would drive Nigeria’s strategic implementation of the AfCFTA.

Oduwole said that the committee was made up of both government and private stakeholders, adding that AfCFTA was one of the most transformative trade and economic initiatives in Africa’s history.

She said that AfCFTA represented more than a trade agreement, as it was a bold vision of integration, prosperity and inclusive growth across the Africa continent.

“With a market value of 1.4 billion people, and a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 3.4 trillion dollars, AfCFTA offers Nigeria and, indeed, the whole of Africa, an unprecedented opportunity to reposition itself in a global economy.

“In advancing Nigeria’s implementation of the AfCFTA, we have been acknowledged regionally and globally for this impressive prioritisation.

“The work ahead of us is both urgent and essential. The world is watching how Africa rises, and Nigeria must lead by example,” the minister said.

She said that the AfCFTA agreement was signed on March 2018, and officially came into force on May 2019, giving momentum to Africa’s already dynamic investment and trade landscape.

Oduwole said that the agreement was a pivotal step toward establishing a single continental market for goods and services, with goals that included facilitating investment and trade.

According to her, it will promote sustainable and inclusive development, adapting gender policy and structural transformation, enhancing competitiveness, and stimulating industrial development across African economies.

“To achieve these goals, the agreement has been structured around several protocols. The first protocol, phase one, include trading goods, trading services, and business development procedures.

“While the phase two protocols involved investment, intellectual property rights, competition policy, digital trade, women and youth in trade,” she said.

Oduwole said that the President had directed her to coordinate diverse information of the AfCFTA agreement to strengthen the important mandate and ensure coordinated strategic implementation.

She urged all the committees and other relevant stakeholders to be committed to ensure a strong and effective implementation of AfCFTA.

“We will hold each other accountable as we create a roadmap for Nigeria’s implementation, and we actually speak to see what we are going to be able to deliver, even this year.

“We will track transparency to make sure that what we are going to deliver will bring a great achievement,” the minister said.

Mrs Nonye Ayeni, the Director-General of Nigeria Exports Promotion Council (NEPC), who spoke on behalf of the committee, said that the committee members would be committed and focused, to ensure positive result.

Also, the Special Adviser to the Minister, Mrs Patience Okala, said that AfCFTA was aimed at creating job opportunities and to boost economy in the continent. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has lauded the Foundation for a Better Foundation (FABE foundation) for promoting eco-consciousness and environmental sustainability among schoolchildren in the state.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, represented by Mrs Bola Adewunmi, Director, LAWMA Academy, said this at the closeout ceremony of EcoschoolNg project on Thursday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the EcoSchoolsNG initiative was borne out of a vision to empower young people with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to become champions of sustainability, stewards of the environment, and pioneers of the circular economy.

The project is championed by FABE Foundation, an environmental sustainability non-governmental organisation (NGO) under the sponsorship of Aspire Coronation Trust Foundation (ACT Foundation) and Access Bank to promote climate action.

Gbadegesin commended the initiative and efforts of FABE in training climate conscious youths in the promotion of a circular economy.

“Basically the programme today is about turning waste into wealth, which is primarily the sources waste management. We want to reduce what goes into our landfills and we are also teaching the kids out there to reuse and then reduce waste.

“At LAWMA, we believe it is not waste until it is wasted.

“What we are propagating now is for the children to sort their waste from source, so that the waste that can be recycled, can be properly used in a clean state.

“FABE foundation is an NGO that we have identified with, in teaching and educating the students, especially in public schools both theoretically and hands on where they learn how to turn tyres into ottomans and chairs.

“They learn also how to make flower vases from pet bottles covers. All tiers of education from the primary, to the secondary and tertiary schools are being taught how to turn waste to resources.

“This has made these students entrepreneurs even from a young age.

“LAWMA is also propagating education in sustainability so our children can imbibe the culture of a cleaner and safer environment for us all,” Gbadegesin said.

One of the Eco-ambassadors and a participant at the 10-month EcoschoolNg project, Ahmed Robiu of Lagos Progressive Senior Secondary School, was grateful to be part of the sustainability training.

“My experience at the EcoSchoolNG 10-month programme brought me great happiness and intelligence.

“Without the introduction of EcoSchoolNG, we have not been able to turn our waste to wealth but with the knowledge we have acquired through FABE foundation.

“We can now turn our trash to treasure and change our surroundings by recycling and upcycling.

“And I started my first earning with N50,000 with a capital of just N10,000 I loaned from my mother.

“We do not have furniture in our house, we were not able to accommodate our visitors, now with training from FABE foundation I have been able to turn my plastic waste into a beautiful ottomans that we can use to entertain our visitors.

“My message to parents out there is to encourage their kids in whatever they are doing in environmental sustainability,” Robiu said .

Another participant at the EcoschoolNg project, Oyindamola Adenaike, Abesan Senior High School Lagos, appreciated the foundation for equipping the students with life skills.

“FABE foundation has taught us that we should not spend our money, we should not waste our money to buy things that we can easily source for through the use of waste resources.

“FABE foundation with the help of this programme have impacted us, that we are not doing this for only ourselves, we are doing it for the betterment of others, our environment and the economy,” Adenaike said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The +234 Art Fair is set to create a supportive ecosystem for emerging Nigerian artists, foster patronage to elevate their careers and strengthen the creative industry.

Its founder, Ms Tola Akerele, while speaking with newsmen in Lagos on Wednesday, said that the fair would provide vital platform for artists, particularly those in remote areas and without gallery representation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fair, which will showcase the works of 260 artists, is organised in partnership with Ecobank Nigeria and Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), among other sponsors.

The theme of the fair is, “Championing Patronage in Nigerian Art”, and will take place at the Ecobank Pan African Centre (EPAC) in Lagos.

“Our core mission is to nurture and empower young artists. We must ask: how can we, as patrons, create a supportive environment.

“How do we inspire the next generation and build an ecosystem that truly promotes their growth.

Akerele noted that the fair would feature four pavilions showcasing 2D art, 3D sculptures, photography, digital art and children’s art with focus on the theme of patronage.

This, she explained, is to ensure that the artists thrive in the art market and contribute to the Nigerian economy, noting that patronage extends beyond financial transactions.

“Support can take many forms: mentorship, providing workspace, financial advice, or connecting artists with reputable galleries.

“We are creating a platform for sales, but also for sustainable career development,” she added.

Recognising the importance of engaging the youth, Akerele noted that the fair included a dedicated children’s gallery that would encourage early appreciation of art and encourage artistic aspirations.

She said, “We need to show young people that a career in art is viable.”

Ms Omoboye Odu, Head SME, Partnerships and Collaboration, Ecobank Nigeria Ltd., highlighted the bank’s commitment to supporting the creative industry as a key driver of economic growth.

Odu said, “Ecobank recognises the creative industry as an essential driver of economic growth, well-being, and global connectivity.

“Our medium-term objective is to become the primary gateway for pan-African trade facilitation, and supporting initiatives like +234Art is integral to that vision.

Technical skills, infrastructure needed to boost cold chain system – Experts

Technical skills, infrastructure needed to boost cold chain system – Experts

By Oluwafunke Ishola

Stakeholders in the nutrition and cold chain system have stressed the need for an improved technical expertise and infrastructure to strengthen cold chain process for a resilient and sustainable food system.

The stakeholders said this during the seventh West African Cold Chain Summit and Exhibition (WACCSE) on Wednesday in Lagos.

They spoke during a panel session titled: “Strengthening Cold Chain Infrastructure for Safe and Nutritious Food in West Africa”.

A cold chain is a temperature-controlled supply chain used to preserve and transport perishable products, such as food, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals, from the point of origin to the point of consumption.

The goal is to maintain a consistent temperature range throughout the entire process, from production and storage to transportation and distribution, to ensure the quality, safety, and shelf life of the products.

Dr Augustine Okoruwa, Regional Programme Manager, Food Fortification, Helen Keller Intl, described inadequate technicians with the expertise to ensure precise temperature control points throughout the supply chain as an impediment to food safety.

Okoruwa, who is also the Chairman, Board of Trustees of Organisation for Technology Advancement of Cold Chain in West Africa (OTACCWA), said investments in cold chains without a skilled workforce were futile.

He said unskilled workers were the major bottleneck that affected the storage, transportation, and distribution of food across West Africa.

“Human beings are responsible for maintaining the cool chain. They are supposed to set the temperature at minus 20 degrees celsius but they won’t look at it very well and won’t put it at the right time.

“We want a logistic vehicle to move from Kaduna to Lagos. We know the temperature is constant.

“A human being will want to save energy because they believe that if you put on the cooling system, it will produce more energy. And so they will switch off at some point and then switch it on when they are getting close to their destination,” he said.

According to him, deviation from the required temperature range could lead to spoilage, deterioration, or even complete loss of perishable goods.

Okoruwa emphasised that improvements to the global cold chain system would not only reduce waste but also feed an additional 950 million people annually.

He stressed the need for proper packaging to ensure the delivery of the right food quality and safety along the value chain.

Similarly, Mr Pelumi Aribisala, Chairman, Cato Foods Ltd., said an inefficient cold chain system for food portends nutritional and public health threats, which culminate in economic loss.

Aribisala emphasised the need for quality infrastructure and smooth transportation of temperature-sensitive goods for effective cold chain management.

Also, Mr Michael Akinsete, Co-founder, Ecotutu, underscored the importance of leveraging technologies such as solar technology to mitigate the inefficiencies of power supply in the country.

Data from the African Development Bank showed that Nigeria loses approximately $29 billion annually to unreliable power supply, equating to about 5.8 per cent of its GDP.

Also, Mr Godwin Ehiabhi, Senior Project Manager, Supply Chains for Commercialisation at the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), said 40 per cent of food produced in the country is affected by post-harvest loss.

“GAIN is concerned by food loss and wastage because nutritious foods are often the most perishable.

“So as an organisation, we’re working to see how best we can reduce not only the burden of malnutrition but also other things that come with it,” he said.

Ehiabhi said GAIN, with assistance from USAID, in 2015 inaugurated the Post‑harvest Loss Alliance for Nutrition (PLAN) to reduce the loss of nutritious foods, boosting suppliers’ livelihoods while increasing the availability and affordability of nutritious and safe foods for consumers.

He said the outcome of PLAN was the creation of OTACCWA, a privately led and funded business association focused on developing the cold chain in West Africa.

Ehiabhi reiterated GAIN’s commitment to building partnerships to increase access to safe and nutritious food and exploring cold chain innovation to drive food security and economic resilience in West Africa. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Business Club Ikeja (BCI) kicked off its maiden three-day Trade Expo on Tuesday, designed to stimulate growth and address the specific needs of businesses in Ikeja and environs.

The exhibition, held at the BCI Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, served as a dynamic platform for 60 businesses to drive innovation and collaboratively find solutions to common business challenges for growth.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Adetola Okanlawon, Revenue Chairman, Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), highlighted the role of businesses in economic development.

According to him, businesses, whether small, medium, or large, are the backbone of any thriving economy.

Okanlawon said that the Lagos State Government and Onigbongbo LCDA were creating an enabling environment that supports business growth due to the importance of the private sector.

He listed government efforts to include improving revenue systems, streamlining processes and ensuring that policies foster rather than hinder enterprise development.

He called for collaboration among exhibitors, urging them to share insights and leverage innovation to solve real-world problems.

The council boss called on investors and policymakers to create an ecosystem that supports and nurtures businesses for growth and expansion.

“As we officially open this expo, let us do so with a renewed commitment to growth, collaboration and innovation.

“May this event serve as a catalyst for greater achievements in the business community,” he said.

Dr Adesola Falaiye, BCI President, said that the association showcases businesses of its members and people in Ikeja and its environs.

“The theme of this is buy, sell, connect. The aim is to bring businesses together, not just to come and showcase but to interact, collaborate and see what they can do together,” she said.

She said that the association invited Onigbongbo LCDA and the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce and Industry as partners for them to understand the challenges and prospects of businesses.

She added that the expectation was that the government would be able to contribute to business growth while benefiting from the symbiotic relationship by drawing revenue.

Prof. Anthony Kila, Chairman of the Business Club Ikeja (BCI) Business Expo Organising Committee, said the exhibition would be an annual event.

According to him, the maiden edition is organised to coincide with the annual general meeting of the association.

He added that the event aims to unite entrepreneurs, business leaders and industry experts to explore new opportunities for partnerships, business growth and innovation. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
