By Olawunmi Ashafa

The Managing Director of Wema Bank, Mr Moruf Oseni, says the bank’s foremost goal is returning to Nigeria’s top tier of banking.

He stated this during the Gala Night in Lagos, celebrating the bank’s 80th anniversary under the theme, ‘80 Years of Impact: The Future of Possibilities”.

“We have a bold vision for Nigeria’s financial future. Our immediate aim is to reclaim our place at the industry’s forefront,” Oseni said.

He added, “We’ll keep innovating, using technology to offer financial services that empower Nigerians and Africans to succeed wherever they are.”

Oseni expressed confidence in the bank’s future, anchored in creativity, innovation, and unwavering customer focus.

He also stressed the bank’s commitment to nurturing future talent, while honouring the role of women in banking’s past and present.

Encouraging unity, Oseni shared the bank’s internal identity: “At Wema, we call ourselves knights skilled, ready to face challenges, and fulfil our God-given potential.”

Earlier, Wema Bank Chairman, Dr Oluwayemisi Olorunshola, reflected on the institution’s long and storied history.

“We celebrate God’s grace, foresight, resilience, hard work, and inclusivity — traditions we proudly uphold,” she said.

She recounted the bank’s founding in 1945 as Agbomagbe Bank, Nigeria’s first indigenous bank during colonial rule.

“It was these values that gave our founder the courage to establish Agbomagbe Bank under colonial rule. What a solid foundation,” she declared.

Olorunshola praised Wema Bank’s resilience through key moments in history, including war, economic booms, and global crises.

“We welcomed information, explored new terrain, and embraced innovation fearlessly.

“We’re not just counting years — we’re celebrating seasons, generations, eras, and transformational milestones,” she said.

The event welcomed dignitaries such as Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by his Special Adviser on Job Creation & MSME, Mr Temitola Adekunle-Johnson, and philanthropist, Chief Kessington Adebutu.

They applauded Wema Bank’s lasting contributions to Nigeria’s economic progress.

Vice President Shettima noted that Wema Bank had “stood the test of time” and shaped the nation’s financial journey.

Chief Adebutu echoed this, praising the bank’s resilience and foresight from humble roots to major industry presence. (NAN)(www.nannnews.ng)

Tinubu tasks governors on performance

Tinubu tasks governors on performance

By Salif Atojoko

President Bola Tinubu has called on governors to remain focused on delivering tangible results that improve the lives of their people, urging them to disregard armchair critics.

The President gave the charge during a two-day visit to Katsina, adding that the accurate measure of leadership is a positive, visible impact.

“Let the people be at the heart of your programmes. Your hard work and concrete achievements will answer any criticism. Ignore distractions – your results will speak for you,” he said.

The President commissioned a 24 kilometre road, which Gov. Dikko Radda completed within 18 months.

He also commissioned the Katsina Agricultural Mechanised Centre.

The road commissioned was the Eastern Bypass, which stretched from Dutsin-ma Road through Kano and Daura Roads and terminated at Yandaki in the Kaita Local Government Area.

“We have decided for peace and stability. I know you face terrorism and banditry attacks in the state, but you have shown determination and courage to move Katsina State forward.

“You will not walk alone. The federal government will be with you,” he added.

Tinubu noted that hunger and poverty remained the biggest threats to peace in the country.

“The economy is sailing in the right trajectory. Today, we are seeing an effort to banish hunger and a commitment to food security and the empowerment of our people.

“Small and large-scale farming will be encouraged. Once we liberate ourselves from hunger, we will appreciate peace and harmony.

“The remarkable progress in the state will continue to be rewarded. I want to assure the Nigerian public that agriculture is the heart of our progress and must be for all.

“We have dedicated ourselves to food security. We must invest in mechanisation and water management. The old style of agriculture is gone,” he stated.

The President said the Bank of Agriculture would be resuscitated and properly repositioned to meet farmers’ needs and improve farming and agricultural production.

“When resuscitated, the bank will make funds available for large, medium and small-scale farming,” he said.

Tinubu commended Radda for impacting agriculture, healthcare, education and infrastructure in less than two years.

“I listened to your report card. It is a big task. In just half of your tenure, you have made remarkable progress.

“The commitment you have shown and the efforts you have put into government are highly commendable. You are a patriot, a son, and a progressive mind with honesty.

“It was difficult during the election when you started, thanks to former Governors like Ibrahim Shema, the bridge builder Aminu Masari and Waziri of the universe, Ibrahim Masari.

“I want to congratulate the great people of Katsina for making the right choice by electing Radda. We have been collaborating with him for the good of the state and the country,” the President added.

President Tinubu challenged the governors to pay more attention to agriculture.

“You have introduced a great, progressive movement in Katsina State by just tilling the land and putting the land to use. Farming will be our source of prosperity and growth.

“We should remove ourselves from reliance on oil and commit to agriculture. It will bring prosperity. I commend you for the mechanisation programme.

“It is a great investment, and I hope others can learn from it. The construction of the 24-km road speaks volumes about the effectiveness of the government. I say thank you,” President Tinubu said.

He thanked past governors of the state for purposeful leadership and appreciated the traditional council, Katsina, and Daura Emirates for supporting the country’s unity, peace, and progress.

“Thank you for the great honour that you have given me. Your coming to the airport to receive me made me feel so welcome. I am your son, and I am one of you.

“You’ve demonstrated commitment and sincerity to the unity and peace of our country.

“God will continue honouring and raising you in grace for our country. For me, this is homecoming, and Katsina is home. Home to progress, development and freedom for good,” he added.

Radda, on his part, said the Katsina Agricultural Mechanized Centre would serve the 34 local councils in the state, noting that 400 tractors had been purchased with the federal government’s N25 billion intervention.

He said 160 km of roads had been constructed, and some rehabilitated within the state over the period, while power, water supply, and healthcare facilities had improved people’s lives.

Radda added that the Ministry of Agriculture had supplied the state with 4,000 pumping machines to enhance irrigation farming.

He said 448,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser were distributed to farmers last year, and this year, they would receive 400,000 metric tonnes.

The governors of Borno, Benue, Kaduna, Kwara, and Jigawa states attended the commissioning.

Former Governors Aminu Masari and Ibrahim Shema, as well as ministers of culture, solid minerals, and agriculture, were also present. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

“You are the shield of Nigeria, the brave sons and daughters who dstand between our people and the forces of terror.

“Every inch of ground you hold, every terrorist you neutralise, and everycommunity you secure is a victory for justice, freedom and the future of our children,” said Tinubu.

He said the fight troops were waging in Katsina State and across the ccountrywas not just a battle for territory; but a battle for the soul of Nigeria.

“Your resilience in the face of danger inspires the entire nation. Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed.

“You have left behind your families and the comforts of civilian life to wear the uniform of honour and duty. You face danger not for wealthor recognition, but for the love of our dear country.

“That, my brothers and sisters in uniform, is the highest form of patriotism. You are the silent guardians of our democracy, and I salute you,” the president stated.

Tinubu added that he was fully aware of the challenges the troops faced.

“We are taking bold steps to equip you with advanced equipment, superior intelligence, and robust logistical support not only to defend this nation but to dominate and defeat every adversary.

“We are committed to ensuring your families are safe, your allowances are paid promptly, your healthcare is guaranteed, and your dignity upheld.

“Housing programmes, family support systems, insurance coverage, and improved remuneration are being implemented without delay,” continued the president.

He said the threats of terrorism, banditry, and insurgency had persisted for too long, and that Nigerians were counting on the government and on the troops to end the menace and reclaim every inch of the country’s territory.

Tinubu said, “Let me hear you loudly: Are you ready, are you committed to ending this insecurity once and for all? Let your resolve echo through every valley and forest.

“Let the enemies of Nigeria know their time is up,” Tinubu charged the soldiers.”

He was emphatic that the war would not be won by weapons alone but by the will to stand, resist, fight and triumph.

“As your President, I will match your courage with action, investment and unwavering support.

“To those who seek to destabilise our nation, be they domestic collaborators or foreign agents—hear this: Nigeria will not bow.

“Not to fear. Not to terror. Not to treachery.

“You, the Nigerian military, are the spearhead of this fight. With your valour and discipline, peace shall prevail.

“Stand tall. Be proud. Nigeria depends on you, and I am with you—today, ttomorrow and always,” he emphasised.

NGO sensitises CAN leaders on building regulations

NGO sensitises CAN leaders on building regulations

By Mercy Omoike

Thrivescape Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, has sensitised Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) leaders, Alimosho Chapter, on compliance with urban planning and building regulations to prevent building collapse and drive zero demolition.

Ms Tosin Ayodele, during the “Avoidance is Better than Building Collapse/Demolition” campaign, on Thursday in Lagos, emphasised the importance of bridging knowledge gaps in constructing a building.

According to Ayodele, the thrivescape campaign is designed to tackle the root causes of demolition and structural failures.

She called for partnership in achieving zero demolition and building collapse to promote livable and sustainable cities where everyone can thrive.

Ayodele outlined key factors that led to building demolition to include encroachment into setbacks and rights of way, construction under high-tension power lines, building in flood-prone zones, canals, or other unsafe areas.

She noted that development without obtaining physical planning permits, construction on government acquisition lands, non-compliance with approved building plans and poor building maintenance resulted in distressed structures.

Ayodele added that use of substandard materials and unqualified personnel, foundational failures, poor structural design and inadequate building maintenance contributed to the menace.

She called on the faith leaders to champion the cause of safer buildings by encouraging their congregations to always obtain the necessary development permits.

She implored them to engage qualified professionals instead of unlicensed builders, adhere strictly to approved building plan and avoid constructing in unsafe or unauthorised locations, regardless of cost.

“Demolitions and collapses are devastating and heart-wrenching.

“They are often preventable, and we must treat prevention as a moral and civic duty,” she stated.

Ayodele called on CAN leadership to collaborate with Thrivescape Initiative by inviting them to their worship centres to extend this awareness campaign to them.

The Chairman, CAN, Alimosho Chapter, Rev. Samuel Adeyemi, commended the initiative, describing it as timely, relevant, and necessary.

Adeyemi expressed their commitment to collaborating with Thrivescape Initiative on outreaches and to educate more citizens, with the ultimate goal of eliminating building collapses and demolitions in Lagos State.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Nigerian makes Billboard’s 2025 list of top music lawyers

Nigerian makes Billboard’s 2025 list of top music lawyers

By Babajide Awoyinfa

An entertainment lawyer, Akinyemi Ayinoluwa, who is a partner at Hightower Solicitors and Advocate, has been named one of the most important music lawyers in the world by Billboard for 2025.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the recognition highlights Ayinoluwa’s exceptional expertise in music law and dedication to championing the rights of record producers and songwriters.

According to Billboard’s April edition, Hightower Solicitors, led by Ayinoluwa, recently finalised a publishing agreement with Empire Music, an international music label.

Also with Ragee, a prominent Afrobeats producer who co-produced Chris Brown’s “Sensational”, which earned a nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

This achievement showcases Hightower’s expertise in guiding clients to build valuable music catalogues.

In an interview with NAN, Ayinoluwa said: “I feel blessed to be recognised by Billboard as one of the most important music lawyers in the world.

“I’m dedicating this to my late dad for instilling in me the discipline to stay on a journey, also for introducing me to the legal profession and then also for accommodating my love for music.”

Ayinoluwa’s said that his journey in music law began when he realised that record producers and songwriters were often marginalised and underrepresented in the industry.

“As a young lawyer, I saw an opportunity to make a difference and I have since dedicated my career to advocating their rights.

“For the past 13 years, I’ve been championing record producers and songwriters.

“I think the reason for that is because as a young lawyer at that time, I was in my third year of being a lawyer, and the recording artistes were already doing well.

“It wasn’t easy for a young lawyer to maybe represent them, and the record producers and songwriters were the underrepresented and marginalised individuals in the music industry,” he said.

According to Ayinoluwa’s, his music law practice focuses on representing recording artistes, songwriters, record producers, record labels, investors in music, and talent managers.

He said one of the reasons for building strong relationships with clients was understanding their vision and pain.

“When you understand it, it’s easy to guide them through all the legal challenges that might arise as they continue to proceed with their journey in music,” he said.

According to Akinyemi, the biggest challenge facing Nigerian record producers and songwriters is being compensated appropriately for their work.

“My recognition will inspire me to do more, to do more qualitative work, and to also continue to champion the interest of our clients.

“I think it helps to show that, yes, there’s excellence in Africa. African lawyers can do important work,” he said.

Looking to the future, Ayinoluwa said he was excited to announce a mentorship programme to support the next generation of Nigerian entertainment lawyers. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Nigeria must intensify strategies to achieve sustainable devt – Gbajabiamila

Nigeria must intensify strategies to achieve sustainable devt – Gbajabiamila

By Salif Atojoko

The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, says Nigeria must intensify its internal strategies to achieve sustainable development with shrinking global multilateral cooperation.

Gbajabiamila said this during the official validation of the 2025 Voluntary National Review (VNR), the inauguration of Nigeria SDGs Progress Report 2024 and unveiling of Inclusive Data Charter (IDC) Action Plan, on Wednesday in Abuja.

“In a shrinking multilateral space, we must look inwards for sustainable solutions to our economic, social and environmental challenges,” he stated.

Gbajabiamila underscored the vital role of the SDGs as a strategic framework to guide these efforts.

He noted that Nigeria’s commitment – demonstrated by the successful conduct of VNRs in 2017, 2020, and now 2025 – reflected the government’s resolve to meet the 2030 target.

He commended Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, for her tireless leadership in coordinating the process.

He explained that the 2025 VNR followed six regional consultations held in March 2025 across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

He said exercise assessed progress, identified gaps, and gathered input for the upcoming High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the United Nations in July.

He explained that the consultations underscored the importance of inclusive, participatory, and evidence-based approaches to fast tracking the implementation of SDG.

Gbajabiamila also called on ministries, departments, agencies, development partners, the private sector, academia and civil society to deepen collaboration and mobilise resources to ensure no one was left behind in Nigeria’s sustainable development journey.

He reiterated the Tinubu administration’s unwavering commitment to the SDGs, describing sustainable development as a cardinal objective within the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He conveyed President Tinubu’s best wishes, noting his strong interest in achieving the SDGs.

“When world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, they envisioned a just and truly egalitarian society where no one is left behind.

“Achieving the SDGs will mean ending poverty and hunger, safeguarding our ecosystem and ensuring our people live in peace and prosperity by 2030 and beyond,” Gbajabiamila said.

In her welcome address, Orelope-Adefulire told stakeholders that the national validation workshop reinforced Nigeria’s deepening commitment to the 2030 Agenda.

She noted that nearly a decade after the adoption of the SDGs at the 70th UN General Assembly, Nigeria continued to demonstrate resolve in achieving them.

She referenced the 2024 United Nations SDGs Report, which showed that only 17 per cent of global targets were on track, with developing countries and the poorest populations bearing the greatest burdens.

“Lack of progress towards the SDGs is universal, but developing countries and the world’s poorest people are bearing the brunt,” she remarked.

Orelope-Adefulire described the VNR process as a critical component of the HLPF review mechanism, offering transparency and accountability at the national level.

She noted that Nigeria’s 2025 VNR was the product of extensive consultations across all six geopolitical zones.

She said the consultations included targeted engagements with persons with disabilities, youth and children.

“This national validation workshop not only reaffirms our commitment to the 2030 Agenda but also demonstrates our resolve to ground implementation in inclusive, evidence based, and participatory principles,” she said.

She urged participants to critically assess the VNR’s findings and recommendations to ensure a robust final report.

The Nigeria SDGs Progress Report 2024, unveiled at the workshop, provided a detailed goal-by-goal analysis of achievements and setbacks, while offering strategic recommendations for policymakers at all levels.

Orelope-Adefulire also announced the inauguration of Nigeria’s Inclusive Data Charter Action Plan 2024, developed in partnership with the National Bureau of Statistics and Sightsavers Nigeria.

“Our commitment to leaving no one behind must be data driven and evidence based,” she said.

She added that the IDC Plan reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to disaggregated and inclusive data systems as the foundation of accountable development.

She praised the Multi-Stakeholder Core Working Group for its coordination of the VNR process, acknowledging its diverse membership spanning government agencies, the UN system, civil society, academia, and the disability community.

She also thanked Sightsavers Nigeria for its support in ensuring the active participation of persons with disabilities.

Mr Mohamed Fall, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, delivered a goodwill message in which he commended the Federal Government for its inclusive approach to the VNR and reiterated the UN’s ongoing technical and financial support.

“With less than five years remaining, the SDGs are globally off track. But Nigeria’s participatory approach gives us hope that the course can still be corrected,” he stated.

Fall highlighted Nigeria’s role among the 39 countries presenting VNRs at the 2025 HLPF, offering a platform to showcase transformative and science-based strategies.

He urged the workshop to produce actionable recommendations to address challenges such as poverty, inequality and climate change.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) echoed similar sentiments.

Represented by Mr Eghosa Omoigui, Assistant Director, Mr Abdulateef Shittu, NGF Director General, cited subnational progress from Kwara, Lagos, Gombe and Edo states as proof of local innovation driving change.

“Resource gaps, data limitations, and climate impacts test our resilience, but they sharpen our resolve to act smarter and leave no one behind,” he said.

He added that the NGF was committed to supporting states in localising the SDGs through innovation, partnerships and knowledge sharing.

He urged participants to transform the validation process into a renewed commitment to the 2030 Agenda, stressing, “Nigeria’s story is one of resilience, partnership, and the promise of delivering on sustainable development.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

FG begins process to implement standardised national website

FG begins process to implement standardised national website

By Jessica Dogo

The Federal Government has begun the process of implementing national standardised websites for national and public institutions through the Ministry of Communications Innovation and Digital Economy.

The adoption was made at the April Edition of the DevsInGov on Wednesday in Abuja.

The Ministry organised co-create groups to make recommendations of key features that should be on the websites and they came up with recommendations that would be subject to approval by the relevant stakeholders.

The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Abdullahi, used the opportunity to call for collaboration amongst stakeholders within the public sector in order to move the initiative forward.

The Special Adviser Digital Transformation of the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Nafisa Isah, who organised the co-create project, said it was to build trust in government digital transactions.

“We are talking about the Nigerian Web Design Standards Project, which is a project by the ministry in collaboration with NITDA.

“This project is aimed to create standardised principles, design principles, frameworks and guidelines for all Nigerian government websites.

“This is providing accessibility and enhanced user experience for all the government websites. The idea is to ensure that we have consistency in the design across all the government websites,” she said.

Mr Saliu AbdulKareem, who represented the Director-General of NITDA, said that the websites would have the Nigerian colour, the ministry’s logo and the quote of arms.

Abdulkareem said that the standerdised websites would not start and end at the executive level but a bottom-up approach.

“These websites will look Nigerian. Secondly, it will also help users to be sure that these websites are actually genuine.

“If they have uniformity and conformity, people will really understand that this is a true Nigerian website,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
