Stakeholders in the aviation sector have reiterated their commitment to work with the Federal Government to achieve its goal of net-zero carbon emission by 2060 and climate change actions by 2030.

This is contained in a communique issued at the end of the second annual Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) National Aviation Conference (FNAC) held from May 15 to May 18, in Abuja.

The communique was signed by Capt. Rabiu Yadudu, the Chairman, Planning Team, Mr Nath Abraham- Inajoh, the Alternate Chairman, Planning Team and Mr Adebola Odugbemi, the Conference Secretary.

Prticipants urged all stakeholders in the aviation industry to work with best standard practice to achieve the feat.

They urged the  Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to collaborate with other industry stakeholders and government agencies to achieve a 50 per cent carbon emission reduction.

They also urged the NCAA  to enhance its regulatory oversight to encourage or where necessary reposition the industry to contribute significantly to the nation’s economy through the four basic pillars of Economic, Social, Environmental, and Information Technology with digitalisation.

Participants further called on the NCAA to review the Information Communication Technology and Cyber-Security Policy of the Federal Government as it affects the Aviation sector.

The conference resolved that  the NCAA should head the various stakeholders in a collaborative effort to develop a strategic plan for Aviation industry that would drive and enhance the sustainability of the industry.

According to it, such a plan must cover all processes from design, procurement to implementation.

The conference urged airlines in Nigeria to invest and key into the satellite-based navigation systems already provided by Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to reduce flight time and carbon emissions.

It affirmed that data harmonisation was sine qua non for the development and growth of the industry.

“ There is therefore, a need to develop a credible data repository as proper data analysis is key for adequate planning and decision-making.

“The airports business model must change from the airport being a passenger hub to an energy hub as green energy hub is key to embracing sustainable aviation industry.

“To remain sustainable, the aviation industry must be innovative, constantly review its processes and invest in Research and Development, “ they said.

According to the communique, health and well-being of the aviation workforce is a veritable element to sustainable aviation development.

It stated that stakeholder organisations ought to ensure that their annual budgets make provision for carbon emission reduction and also carry out periodic review of the reduction CO  process and attainment.

It said to facilitate ease of traveling for passengers, domestic network alliance (code-share) ought to be introduced to mitigate disruptions of passengers travel schedule and plan.

The conference encouraged FAAN to make airports tourist friendly.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the conference was “Sustainability of the Aviation Industry in Nigeria.”

NAN reports that in November 2021, on the second day of the world leaders summit of the ongoing United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP26, in Glasgow, UK, President Muhammad Buhari made a commitment that Nigeria will cut its carbon emission to net-zero by 2060.

While acknowledging the importance of COP26 in the midst of obvious changes in the climate, Buhari said that climate change is not about the problem of the future but about what is already happening.

“Desertification in the north, drought in the centre, pollution in the coast are enough evidence for all to see, Nigeria is committed to net-zero by 2060.”

While addressing world leaders, Buhari said Nigeria has developed a detailed energy transition plan and roadmap based on data and evidence and that with Nigeria’s transition plan, gas will play a key role in transitioning the country’s economy across sectors and the data and evidence show Nigeria can continue to use gas until 2040 without detracting from the goals of the Paris agreement. Corruption is a dream killer, ICPC boss tells youths

Corruption

By Isaac Aregbesola

Abuja, June 7, 2023 (NAN) The Chairman, Independent and Corrupt Practices and Other related Commission (ICPC), Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, has described corruption as a dream killer that must be fought to a standstill by the youth.

The Chairman, represented by Alhaji Alli Goni Gujba, Board Member,  ICPC, said this on Wednesday in Abuja, at the maiden edition of the Commission’s inter-schools debate for tertiary institutions in the FCT and Nasarawa State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the institutions participated in the debate included Veritas University, Baze University, Bingham University, University of Abuja, Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa and College of Education, Zuba

The ICPC boss described the youth as the leaders of tomorrow, who needed to fight corruption with great rigour for them to achieve the desired goal.

He said that, “for this to effectively happen, both the older generation and the youth themselves must take steps to provide an enabling environment, both physically and intellectually, to encourage this progressive ideal.

“You must realise that corruption is a dream killer and if you do not fight it to a standstill at your level, it will kill your future dreams.

“Corruption is often erroneously viewed as an adult problem, yet the seeds of this societal virus are planted in the early stages of a person’s life.

“One of the holy books admonishes us to train a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he shall not depart from it.

“I therefore urge you to determine in your heart that you will not give the evil seeds of corruption and value degeneration a conducive environment to germinate.”

He said that the youth had the capacity to shape the future of the country with determination by deliberately shunning corrupt practices.

According to him, “it is indeed a truism that no nation can grow and develop faster than its level and standards of education.”

Owasanoye noted that the deficiencies of the society were magnified by the fact that the youth are starved of the appropriate ethical and cultural values necessary to become model citizens.

He urged the youth to take the advantage of the debate platform to reshape the society

“This inter-schools debate is one of the several platforms ICPC created to encourage capacity building, ethical re-orientation, behavioural change and positive value rejuvenation, especially amongst the youth,” he said.

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa, charged the youth to contribute their quota towards a Nigeria free of economic and financial crimes, urging them to “Do the Right Thing Always”.

Bawa, represented by Chidimma Amanambu, Assistant Commander, EFCC, Head Media Academy, Karu, charged them to contribute their quota towards a Nigeria free of economic and financial crimes..

“The youths are the future of our country and any opportunity to engage their minds in activities that will be beneficial to nation building is a welcome one,” Bawa said.

He expressed concern over the prevalence of cyber crimes among students of tertiary institutions, adding that “this is an illegal activity and not a good narrative as it affects the image of our country.”

He urged the youth, especially students, to shun the act and use the advantages provided for them by the institution of learning positively

“Institutions of learning are the fertile ground where students nurture and imbibe the virtues of integrity, honesty, punctuality and decency as future leaders,” he said.

Paulinus Okwelle, Executive Secretary, National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), in his remarks, called for concerted effort to build a culture of integrity and rid the education system of corruption.

Okwelle, was represented by Bello Abdullahi Esq, Deputy Director, Legal Services, Information and Corporate Service Department.

“We commend you for your efforts to tackle corruption in our educational institutions. By addressing this topic, you have demonstrated a deep understanding of the challenges we face and the critical need for change.

“Tertiary institutions are important in shaping the future of our country. They should be indicators of knowledge, innovation and integrity, but corruption threatens to undermine the foundations on which these institutions are built,” he said.

Deputy Programme Director, Step Up Nigeria, Feranmi Iyanda, said that the event was a testament to the unwavering commitment of the youth to create a better and corruption-free future for Nigeria.

Iyanda urged the students to have the responsibility to champion anti-corruption efforts, not only within their educational institutions but also in all facets of our society.

“I believe wholeheartedly in the power of our youth to shape the future of our nation, and this is what drives the work we do at ‘Step Up Nigeria’.

“Your passion, energy and innovative ideas hold the key to transforming our society into one that is characterized by integrity, transparency, and good governance.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

MacArthur Foundation, an international NGO, on Tuesday in Abuja pledged support to promote transparency, accountability, ethical governance and other anti-corruption activities in Nigeria.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on the Nigeria Anti-Corruption Performance Public Reporting (NAPPR), its Country Director, Dr Kole Shettima, noted that the detrimental effects of corruption on Nigeria demanded concerted efforts to combat it.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised by the Centre for Media, Policy and Accountability (CMPA).

“Corruption has drained Nigeria’s resources, stifled her economic growth, and also rendered many Nigerians poor.

“We are dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote transparency, accountability, and ethical governance,’’ he said.

Shettima said also that MacArthur Foundation had been providing support for anti-corruption projects in Nigeria since 2015.

“This is to tackle the rampant issue which has caused significant harm to Nigeria’s economy and to her citizens,’’ he stressed.

In his remarks, the Executive Director, of CMPA/ NAPPR, Dr Suleiman Suleiman, noted that the project aimed to bridge the gap between anti-corruption agencies and other stakeholders through research, advocacy, training, and capacity building.

He said the project would focus on multiple key areas, which included detection, sanction, and prevention through data collection, investigation, and risk analysis.

Suleiman said the project would allocate resources to educate citizens on anti-corruption strategies, encourage media campaigns and promote integrity in various sectors, including government, business, and civil society.

He said the centre had been collaborating with other local and international organisations as well as with the Nigerian government with support from MacArthur Foundation.

Nigerian Navy signs MoU with Turkish shipyard to remodel NNS ARADU

As part of fleet recapitalisation effort of the Nigerian Government, the Nigerian Navy (NN) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dearsan Shipyard Turkey to remodel the NNS ARADU.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Awwal Gambo, on Tuesday said the MoU was signed to refit the ship aimed at enhancing navy’s capability for enhanced security within Nigeria’s maritime domain.

Gambo said the NNS ARADU, which was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy Fleet as the Flag Ship in 1985, had represented Nigeria in diverse naval operations and exercises within Africa and beyond.

He said it was the only variant of the five MEKO 360 Frigates built in Germany for Argentine and Nigerian Navies.

According to him, wear and tear associated with sustained use as well as the harsh operating environment has taken its toll on the edifice.

“However, with the support of the Federal Government of Nigeria through the unrelenting efforts of the Standing Senate Committee on rehabilitation of NNS ARADU, we are gathered here today to commence modalities to reroll and modernise the nation’s flag ship.

“Another significance of today’s event is the landmark agreement for the supply of additional 57-meter Fast Attack Craft to support the remodelled Flag Ship.

“Undoubtedly, operationalisation of these two vessels will not only increase the fleet of ships but also reposition the Nigerian navy for enhanced maritime security operations for socio-economic prosperity of Nigeria and Africa at large,” Gambo said.

The naval chief said the choice of partnering with Messrs Dearsan Shipyard was based on the company’s track record in high-quality ship building capability as well as strict adherence to agreed timelines.

He added that the firms were currently constructing two High Endurance 76-meter Offshore Patrol Vessels for the navy in Turkey.

“A major consideration is the fact that several equipment, auxiliaries and subsystems being used in the construction of the offshore patrol vessels will be fitted on board NNS ARADU.

“This is to further enhance operability and equipment standardisation, which undoubtedly will guarantee
seamless maintenance necessary to extend the life span of the remodelled flag ship.

“The MoU will re-ignite the partnership between both organisations in promoting synergy toward enhancing security as well as fostering operations and shipbuilding engagements that will enhance capability for the sustainable development of the Blue Economy for Nigeria’s prosperity,” he said.

Gambo appreciated the sustained efforts and support from the federal government, saying it has been instrumental to the successes recorded by the Nigerian navy.

He expressed confidence that the shipyard would actualise a high-quality result and deliver both vessels on schedule.

The naval chief implored both parties to be committed toward the attainment of the objectives.

The Chief Policy and Plans (Navy), Rear Adm. Saidu Garba, said the 125.6 meter ship was the largest in the navy inventory as a general proposed frigate.

Garba said that NNS ARADU was an all-purpose frigate fighting ship capable of undertaking several missions in concert with other units.

He said it has a sustained and independent blue water patrol over a range of 6,500 miles and provides gunfire support to friendly forces operating up to 16 kilometres from the coast.

“It has capability for air defence, submarine warfare, electronic warfare and the ship warfare missiles main lane, as well as airborne or surface search and rescue.

“Since our entry into the service, NNS Aradu has taken part in major naval exercises, fleet reviews and diplomatic cruises.

“The ship has undertaken extensive diplomatic visits to countries like Gabon, Congo, Zaire, Equatorial Guinea and numerous European countries,” he said

The Managing Director, Dearsan Shipyard Turkey, Mr Mukat Gordi, thanked the Nigerian navy for the opportunity to take responsibility as the prime contractor of NNS ARADU modernisation programme.

Gordi said that the relationship started following the signing ceremony of 76m Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) in December 2021.

He said that the 76m OPVs programme had progressed as planned, adding that they aimed to launch the OPVs by the end of the year and deliver the vessels earlier than the contractual dates.

“Since we are aware of the historical importance of NNS ARADU as the flagship of the Nigerian navy, we have initiated our surveys on board the NNS ARADU last year and finalised it in our latest visit to Lagos this week.

“Therefore, we would like to emphasise once again that we are highly honoured for having this chance of being the prime contractor of NNS ARADU modernisation programme.

“We assure you that we will accomplish the modernisation and refit programme according to our contract in time and deliver to the Nigerian Navy,” Gordi said.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Sen. George Sekibo, said the navy had worked excellently with the Senate to achieve results.

Sekibo said the signing of the MoU was a landmark achievement owing to the fact that the refitting of the ship appeared impossible at a time.

He said that there had been so much improvement in the security around the nation’s maritime environment. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Niger Delta Integrity Group (NDIG) says no elders, traditional rulers and other groups have called for the sack of the Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), retired Maj.-Gen. Barry Ndiomu.

This is contained in a statement on Friday by the Convener of the NDIG, Dr Boma Horsfall.

According to Horsfall, Ndiomu, who has enormous respect for traditional institutions, enjoys a cordial relationship with the traditional rulers and elders in the Niger Delta region.

“This has been demonstrated in Ndiomu’s series of meetings with them and other critical stakeholders across the region.

“At those meetings, he normally  engaged them on innovate policies to bring the teeming youth out of the dark and create sustainable livelihoods for them.

“In fact, the NDIG after conducting due diligence and investigation, discovered that there are some resentful and unpatriotic elements who have resolve to destroy the good work and image of Ndiomu.

“For the records, their claims are false and non-existent. It is disappointing that they have now descended to an all-time low level of lunacy.

“Who are the purported elders and traditional rulers that endorsed the false accusations? It is public knowledge that all critical stakeholders of the Niger Delta region, including Elders and Traditional Rulers, are in full support of Ndiomu’s undertakings at the PAP,”  he said.

According to Horsfall, Ndiomu is widely loved and accepted across the region, adding that he should not to be deterred by the whims and caprices of ” a few dishonest elements who are displaying the shortsighted physiognomies of some of our people”.

He called on the general public to disregard any sponsored statements from those individuals who have in the past come forth with fraudulent and bogus contract claims that PAP has refused to attend to.

He alleged that such unpatriotic individuals in the past were fished out as those having multiple accounts linked to one BVN and fraudulently collecting monthly stipends for many years.

“Their negative plans against Ndiomu would not work, because the PAP Interim Administrator is transparent and accountable in all his activities at the PAP.

“We commend Ndiomu on the recently launched Cooperative Scheme, and considers it one of the best ways to create windows of opportunities for youths in the region,”. (NAN)
