Mrs Grace Yussuf, a Deputy Editor in Chief with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), has shared her experiences in the profession to encourage younger female journalists finding it difficult to cope.

Yussuf shared the experiences in her book titled “The Journalist, The Woman and Her Faith” which was launched on Tuesday in Abuja.

She explained that the decision to write the book came out of her desire to document her experiences as a female journalist and a practicing Christian.

“I believe that it will not only be a good reading for many but will also go a long way to encouraging younger female journalists, who may be finding difficulty to cope especially if they had to hold on to their faith and values.

“It is my intention too, that this book will serve as a story of resilience, hard work, moral rectitude, a journey of faith and adherence to Christian virtues even in the practice of an utterly socially-relevant profession as journalism.

“I say this because there is this general belief that journalists are unserious and frivolous. This puts women in a precarious position as it makes them more vulnerable than their male counterparts,” she said.

Mr Joe Bankole, a Media Consultant, while reviewing the book, said that Yussuf having spent her life as a working journalist from 1992 to 2023 shared her 31 years of tutelage, frustrations, disappointments, sweet memories and all-round victory.

According to Bankole, the combination of the above-listed situations made her a success in the course of this interesting journey something to savour.

“Journalism is not a profession I deliberately went into, however, I found myself in it after a few years in the private sector and I grew to learn, embrace and love it. I can safely say it paid off” .

“That was a quote from the introduction to the book. That sums up her incursion into the profession and the conclusion of her experience,” he explained.

He, therefore, recommended the book to all lovers of a disciplined life and one dedicated to the praise of God Almighty.

On her part, Prof. Joy Ezeilo, the Executive Director, Women Aid Collective (WACOL) said that Yussuf balanced her role as a mother and journalist.

“I recall her contributions not only in the economic industry but also in female and gender in Nigeria. I enjoin all of us to support this wonderful woman, who has made herself outstanding.

“And as the topic suggests “The Journalist, The Woman and Her Faith” when I picked up her book; I saw a woman, who, regardless of stereotype in the industry, she was able to balance the role of a mother and her vocation as a journalist,” she said.

Ezeilo, was represented by Mrs Ijeoma Ezeude, Head, Department of Legal Unit, WACOL.

Similarly, Mr Femi Adeshina, Special Assistant to the President on Media commended the author for the initiative.

“This book is the odyssey of a courageous woman, who came out victorious after navigating the world of journalism in Nigeria and beyond after 31 years,” he said.

Adeshina was represented by Ms Patience Tilleygyado, Assistant Director, Information, State House, Abuja.

Mrs Grace Yussuf is a Nigerian female journalist with a career at the News Agency of Nigeria.

She is a committed Christian, widely travelled, happily married with children. (NAN)(www.nanews.ng)

Take Open Defecation-Free campaign to grassroots – FG

175 total views today

By Tosin Kolade

The Minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Suleiman Adamu, has called on all stakeholders to take the Open Defecation-Free (ODF) campaign to grassroots.

Adamu who made this call at his valedictory meeting with newsmen in Abuja, said all sensitisation campaigns ought to be people-centred.

According to him, current efforts to rid Nigeria of public defecation will gain more momentum when they are community-based.

He said there was need to move from conventional media channels of television and billboards, to traditional channels of radio and town criers, especially in rural communities.

“The ODF blueprint is ongoing, and we want the campaigns to be in the grassroots, using radio and other means.

“The ODF message must be community-based and people-centred, this will make current efforts have lasting impact”.

Speaking on his eight-year tenure at the ministry, Adamu said he had no regrets whatsoever, adding however, that his challenge was lack of insufficient revenue to carry out his mandate.

According to the minister, there is need for political support from states to cascade Federal Government’s policies to the people, who are the direct beneficiaries.

He also called for collective responsibility and ownership from all stakeholders, so that the huge investments in the sector would not go to waste.

On the National Water Resources Bill pending at the National Assembly, the minister said some people chose to politicise the provisions of the bill, adding that there was nothing new in its provisions, as 96 per cent of the contents were already existing.

He said that innovations in the reviewed bill included; the institutionalisation of an independent regulatory body to help reposition the water sector, to aid cost recovery and improve the irrigation sector.

“As a government, we are committed to our job to improve the lives of Nigerians, it’s on that basis that we are aggressive about the passage of the water bill”.

He however, expressed optimism that the 10th Assembly would pass the bill into law as it was targeted at repositioning the water resources sector in the country.

He stressed the need for alternative sources to fund the sector and its projects, saying they were capital-intensive and that the Federal government could not fund that alone.

The Director of Press and Public Relations, with the ministry, Kenechukwu Offie, who is also exiting along with the minister after 35 years of service, said leadership was not about title, but getting resources for the benefits of citizenry.

Offie thanked the minister, as well as her colleagues for their cooperation and support during her period in service.

Highlights of the event was the formal presentation of a book, ‘The President’s Water Minister 2015-2023 Milestones of Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu’, authored by Mrs Kenechukwu Offie. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Cross section of some stakeholders  at the stallholders’ engagement workshop in Ibadan on Tuesday

By Ibukun Emiola

Experts in the aquaculture industry in Nigeria have identified collaboration among stakeholders as a panacea to solving challenges in the industry.
They stated this at the stallholders’ engagement workshop in Ibadan on Tuesday.
The programme is with the theme: “Implementation of Best Management Practices in Aquaculture and E-Technology Platform Adoption for Sustainable Aquaculture Development in Nigeria”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project is funded by USAID, hosted by University of Ibadan and the International Centre for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM).
Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, the Principal Investigator, FIL Aquaculture Biosecurity Project, University of Ibadan, said the project was one of USAID-funded projects under the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Fish.
Adeyemo said that Nigeria was the host Country, and the project sites are Ogun and Delta states.

According to her, the theme of the workshop is focused on disseminating Best Management Practices in Aquaculture.
She stated that it was developed as an outcome of the project with the hope that the uptake of BMP by farmers would lead to a significant reduction in the incidences of diseases in aquaculture.
“We should also be presenting a justification for a collaborative development and implementation of a National Aquatic Animal Health and Governance Strategy (NAAHS).
“We strongly believed that communicating our findings will in no little measure assist Competent Authorities with jumpstarting the processes involved in having a NAAHS enacted, implemented, and monitored.

This is to ensure performance sustainability and resilience of the Nigerian aquaculture industry,” she said.
Adeyemo said the workshop would showcase best examples of electronic technology platforms for aquaculture development in Nigeria.
This, she said, would include demonstrating the improvements of E-Aquahealth Solutions, that was developed to bridge the identified gap of inadequate veterinary and disease diagnostic support to the Industry.
Also, Prof. Gabriel Ogundipe, Head, Department, of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine, University of Ibadan, stated that the industry in Nigeria was growing and Nigeria was depending on it for animal protein supply.

So, many people are in the industry either as fishermen or as fish farmers, whereas a lot of people are also involved in marketing the products of the aquaculture industry.
“So, we need to sustain the industry to be able to feed the multitudes of Nigerians.
“We also need to sustain the industry to maintain the people who are employed by the industry.
“And, we also need to maintain this industry because of the consumers who depend on fish for their livelihood,” he said.

In his presentation, Prof. Larry Hanson, Principal Investigator, Aquaculture Biosecurity Project, Mississippi State University, USA said from the background, the key findings from the survey were lack of records of losses and production,.
Hanson said that there was also  lack of biosecurity measures between production and stocking and between farms and within farms.
He stated after outbreaks, farmers rarely consulted veterinarians, adding that management had been the best defence, for disease prevention and to reduce losses, improves growth and reduces the use of drugs and chemicals.
He stressed the need for management-optimizing the environment, fish defences and minimizing the pathogen.

Others who spoke at the event, Dr Ganiyu Oladayo, Chief Executive Officer, Aquapet Ventures; Mr Bisi Oni of Fund Quest and Mr Lanre Oyedepo of Safeguard Insurance Brokers Ltd highlighted the challenges and way out  of financing in the industry.
They also talked on the need to upscale to meet the future demands of the industry. (NAN)

SERVICOM rates CAC high in service delivery

Mrs Nnenna Akajemeli, SERVICOM National Coordinator presenting SCE reports to Alhaji Garba Abubakar, CAC Registrar-General

By Okon Okon

The Service Compact with all Nigerians (SERVICOM) has rated the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in the quality of service delivery to Nigerians.

Mrs Nnenna Akajemeli, National Coordinator SERVICOM, presented the SERVICOM Compliance Evaluating (SCE) reports of selected states offices to CAC Registrar-General, Alhaji Garba Abubakar, on Wednesday in Abuja.

The objective of SCE, she said, is to ensure citizen focused service delivery in MDAs to identify gaps in service delivery and making recommendations to improve customers satisfaction and accountability.
Akajemeli said CAC had done well in all the locations visited by SERVICOM team, except in some areas identified and recommended for its improvement.
According to her, customers interviewed at the Headquarters for instance complained that fees charges for daily search from N2, 000 to N50, 000 were too high.
She added that the hike in such charges had made access to service cumbersome to its customers.
“The management of CAC should consider reducing the fee for daily search to accommodate all customers. This will ensure that all customer group have been put into consideration. “
The SERVICOM boss also identified downtime experienced by the customers when making an online application, thereby making documents submitted not received, resulting to the query of such documents.
“Some customers complained of technical glitches in the system, resulting in the challenges during the registration process that take a significant amount of time to resolve”.
She also identified other areas of weaknesses to includes direct interaction with customers, outdated computer system in some offices visited among others.
Akajemeli, nevertheless, lauded the CAC management in area of monitoring of staff performances through a dash board to ensure that all task queue sent daily were cleared daily.
She recommended ‘adoption of customer-centric approach service delivery’ among other approaches for the commission to provide opportunity for a staff to directly interact with customers.
Responding, Abubakar, thanked SERVICOM for the reports which was carried out across the commission offices, adding that it was so important to them.
On charges and others, Abubakar admitted that the commission had some challenges ranging from ticketing system for customers to lay their complaints, missing of important documents due to free access to files by customers among others.
According to him, the commission observed some fraudulent acts by customers who have been having direct access to records by removing them away from the files which had forced them to operate electronically.
“There are instant where complete files were being removed from this office.
“So, we have to stop the system of giving people access to our files, even if you must have access, we make it so expensive. For you to require this access, you have to be under supervision .
“We have introduced other systems and if you must conduct a search, we make it so expensive to discourage people from coming here.”
The CAC boss explained that the electronic system introduced since 2021 became imperative to protect the integrity of their records.
He added that the commission had introduced a call centre with agents who receive calls and could chat directly with the customers.
According to him, the centralisation system in the commission is a deliberate decision because of electronic systems for effective processes.
He, however, advised the CAC management not to take SERVICOM reports as an indictment, rather as a feedback mechanism for service improvement. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

NUPRC unveils digital platform for host community development

By Emmanuella Anokam

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has unveiled an Industry Digital Automated Portal (IDAP) for monitoring and reporting of the Host Community Development Trust (HCDT).

The commission said the platform was developed for transparent administration of the host communities as provided by the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the portal was unveiled on Wednesday in Abuja at the NUPRC’s stakeholders’ engagement on operationalisation of the HCDT pursuant to the PIA 2021.

Speaking at the event, the Commission Chief Executive, Mr Gbenga Komolafe, said the IDAP which was developed in partnership with an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) would meet specific requirements of the HCDT.

This, he said, would aid operations of relevant stakeholders including the settlors, board of trustees and fund managers, among others.

Komolafe said the platform would fulfil obligations to host communities and promote accountability and transparency in the HCDT programme management.

Komolafe was represented at the event by Dr Kelechi Ofoegbu, the Executive Commissioner, Economic Regulation and Strategic Planning, NUPRC.

“It will also enable quick feedbacks from the stakeholders and the public for the commission to carry out its regulatory oversight effectively.

He disclosed that the commission had approved 75 host community development trusts of which 41 had been fully incorporated by the Corporate Affairs Commission.

According to him, it has pre-qualified 19 fund managers and equally commenced the process of establishing a baseline of ongoing community development projects, in preparation for their migration into the HCDTs.

“The establishment of the HCDT will create a more equitable distribution of the industry’s benefits and reduce the social and economic disparities in the country.

“NUPRC shall continue to provide requisite support and guidance for the full implementation of the law,” he said.

Komolafe also urged stakeholders to continue to work together to ensure the successful implementation of the PIA.

He, however, tasked them to collaborate in creating a sustainable and equitable oil and gas industry that would benefit Nigerians.

Komolafe said the commission was prioritising efforts toward increasing oil and gas production and ensuring maximum federation revenue through the optimisation of oil and gas value chain.

“The efforts have been constrained by myriad of challenges ranging from insecurity, low investment, de-prioritisation of funding of hydrocarbon development arising from energy transition.

“Currently, Nigeria has the technical allowable capacity to produce about 2.5 million barrels of oil per day. However, arising from the highlighted challenges, our current production hovers around 1.5 million barrels of oil and condensate per day.

“To further stem the tide of sabotage and third-party interferences on oil and gas critical infrastructure, the PIA has in effect domesticated the protection of our oil and gas infrastructure to the host communities,” he said.

He said that one critical milestone under the PIA was the incorporation of the HCDT by the settlor provided for in Section 235 as well as appointment of Board of Trustees (BOT) by the settlor in consultation with the host communities.

“Settlors are the oil and gas companies operating within host communities,” he added.

Earlier, Captain John Tonlagha, the Executive Commissioner, Health, Safety, Environment and Communities, NUPRC, solicited support and collaborative contribution of all industry players toward implementation of provision of law regarding host communities.

Section 240 (2) of the PIA stipulates that each settlor, where applicable through the operator, shall make an annual contribution to the applicable host communities development trust fund.

The amount shall be equal to three per cent of its actual annual operating expenditure of the preceding financial year in the upstream petroleum operations affecting the host communities for which the HCDT was established. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
