Bilateral relations and trade between Israel and Nigeria will rise with the commencement of direct flights between the two countries from March, according to Israeli authorities.

Ms Sharon Bar-Li, Deputy Director-General, African Department, Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said this while meeting with some Nigerian journalists on a media tour to Jerusalem on Wednesday.

Bar- Li said that the direct flights would further cement the relations between Africa and the Middle East.

“Once we are able to inaugurate direct flights between Nigeria and Israel we are going to see a boost because right now, there is no gate way for Israel into Africa.

“As a former Ambassador to Ghana I can tell you that it is very difficult once you do not have a direct flight. Once this route starts working, we are going to see a huge change.

“We are going to see business flourishing; people will be able to come and go easily. We will see a pilgrimage,” she said.

The director-general said Nigeria was a very religious country and the citizens, both Christians and Muslims, went to Israel on pilgrimage.

“Do not forget that Jerusalem is a sacred place for free religions, not just to Christianity, not just to Judaism, but also to Islam where people come to mount to do little hajj.

“By March, I really hope to be able to welcome to Israel the Minister who will come on the first flight to inaugurate this route. It will be a very profitable route with a high demand for it.

“The eagerness to open this new route is a good sign for post-COVID-19 recovery,” Bar-Li said.

She said that the operation of a direct flight between Israel and Nigeria would break all trade barriers, lamenting the minimal trade between both countries which had been on the low in recent years.

“The trade is very minimal and I am hopeful that with this direct flight we will have no more excuses,” she added ( NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Debarment allowance: Pension Board explains payment delay

By Sumaila Ogbaje

Military Pensions Board (MPB) says the delay in the receipt of payment of Security Debarment Allowance (SDA) by eligible military retirees was due to hitches between the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and disbursing banks.

The Chairman of the board, Rear Adm. Saburi Lawal, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Lawal said the delay did not emanate from the board but from technical hitches experienced between the CBN and the disbursing banks of the retirees and Next-of-kins (NOK) of deceased pensioners.

He said the Board had, however, assured the retirees that efforts were being made to resolve the observed problems and commence payment.

“It has, however, come to the notice of the board that bank accounts of some of our esteemed pensioners are yet to be credited with their entitlements, especially for those banking with the Unity Bank, Access Bank, Eco Bank, Keystone Bank and Heritage Bank.

“It is pertinent to clarify that the delay is not caused by the board. It is as a result of some technical hitches experienced in the execution of the MPB’s mandate by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the commercial banks earlier mentioned.

“Notwithstanding this development, the board is assuring our esteemed pensioners that the MPB is on top of the situation as efforts are being made to ensure all eligible pensioners get paid as soon as possible.

“Furthermore, the Board is using this medium to request all members of veteran associations to please inform NOKs of deceased pensioners that payment of SDA to eligible deceased military pensioners will commence on Thursday, Jan. 19,” he said.

Lawal also urged the NOKs of eligible deceased military personnel who died after Nov. 9, 2017 to contact their respective banks for their entitlements.

He also advised those whose bank account details were not with the board to formally apply to the Chairman MPB for their entitlements.

He said that such applications should be accompanied with a copy of death certificate of the deceased pensioner, discharge certificate, retirement letter and sworn affidavit as to NOK of the deceased.

“Others are means of identification of the NOK such as National Identity Card, International Passport or Driver’s License, passport photograph of the NOK and Letter from bank confirming account details of the NOK.

“In the same vein, all non-pensionable military retirees who retired prior to Nov. 9, 2017, and alive are also to apply to the Chairman MPB for payment of their SDA entitlements.

“Their applications are to be accompanied with the following documents: Copy of Discharge Certificate/Retirement Letter.

“Copy of Discharge/Retirement ID Card, current passport photograph and letter from bank confirming account details of the Retiree,” he added.

MPB chair thanked the affected pensioners, retirees and NOKs for their patience and understanding, adding that the board regretted the inconveniences caused by the delay.

He restated the commitment of the board to always serve them better on issues bothering on their entitlements. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The new Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, on Tuesday took over the Directorate of Defence Information from the erstwhile director, Maj.-Gen. Jimmy Akpor.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akpor was moved to Army Headquarters as Director Personnel Services.

Gusau commended his predecessor for forging better relationship with the media which helped to positively project the operations of the armed forces.

He also appreciated the media for the continuous support of the armed forces, and called for stronger relationship between the military and the media on matters of national security.

“I urge you to provide the enabling environment for members of the armed forces of Nigeria to perform their constitutional roles without distractions.

“As the nation gradually approach the coming general elections starting from next month, I urge you to avoid reports capable of affecting the morale of our gallant troops and the credibility of our armed forces,” he said.

Gusau assured that the armed forces would assist media practitioners to discharge their duties where necessary.

He added that the military would also support other government agencies to achieve peaceful and credible elections across the country.

The director described the military and the media as partners in progress, saying the two should strive to promote the interest of the country at all times.

“I urge you to offer me the same support, cooperation and understanding which you have rendered to Maj.-Gen. Akpor as Director of Defence Information,” he said.

In his remarks, Akpor said the media and the military now have deep understanding of their responsibilities.

He said the Chief of Defence Staff had done so much in forging enduring relationship with the media.

Akpor said this was necessary because the media, like the military, has crucial role to play in creating peaceful and orderly environment for all citizens.

He commended the CDS for holding two media parleys with editors and media chief executives where fruitful discussions led to better understanding of the responsibilities of each profession in furtherance of national security.

Akpor, who tagged his speech the “Truth About the Armed Forces of Nigeria”, said the Nigerian military has rich history of great exploits.

He cited the North East where life has been returning to normal due to the efforts of the military after over a decade of insurgency.

According to him, there was bumper agricultural harvest in 2022, and for the first time in 13 years, Independence day parade was held in Maiduguri on Oct. 1, 2022.

“Irrespective of the security challenges confronting the nation and the way they mutate, the armed forces will continue to build requisite capabilities through the support of the Federal Government.

“Whilst there were 48 piracy/armed robbery related incidents in Nigeria’s territorial waters in 2018, 35 in 2019, 35 in 2020 and six in 2021, there was none in 2022.

“This was not due to wishful thinking, but due to dogged efforts of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and availability of the critical assets provided.

“The truth about the armed forces is therefore a professional one rooted in its desire to meet its constitutional imperatives,” he said.

Akpor, therefore, urged the media to extend the same support given him to his successor, for him to discharge his responsibilities effectively.

NAN reports that the new spokesperson, Brig.-Gen. Gusau, is a thorough bred public relations professional who has served in different units, formations and military operations both at home and abroad.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Some Officials of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs made this known during meetings with a delegation of Nigerian journalist on a tour of Israel on Tuesday in Jerusalem.

They said that Israel is known for its high technology, innovation which it successfully used to transform its nation to a developed one irrespective of its numerous challenges.

Sharon Bar-Li, Deputy Director-general, African Department, Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Israel’s aim is to transfer knowledge to a society and ensure sustainability of such programmes by training and empowering local partners.

“We have continued working with African countries making the Israeli technology available.

“Here, it is really not about the know-how, transferring knowledge, transferring technology, but the idea of working with Israel is about the do how because we have the experience.

“Just several years ago we were a developing country and therefore we are in a very good position to work together with your countries.

“One of the fields that Israel have decide to master, and if you like to use as a spearhead in its activities in African countries is around a sector of innovation and entrepreneurship.

“Israel is described as the start-up nation, country of innovation. This restlessness that we have is the key engine to innovation.

“Although the traditional sectors of agriculture, water and health are still very relevant when working with African countries, we have realized that many African countries have entrepreneurial elements in which Israel and Israeli can connects with naturally.

“And this is where we identify a good area, a common denominator where we can work together,” Bar Li said.

Bar-Li said that one of Israel’s sustainable development programmes in Africa is the establishment of its Development Agency, MASHAV’s Innovative Hub (Innov-Hub) in Abuja for aspiring researchers.

“What we are looking for is partnerships at which local people are part of the project. That they are not just recipients of the projects because that is the only way to make it work.

“If you are a rich country, the easiest thing to say is that I will buy them fish but it is a big mistake because if you buy them fish, people will not fish themesleves.

“So what you need to do is help them create better sources of nourishment to catch those fish and this is what we try to do.

“What is unique about Israel is that we have no colonialist past, so it means we come with clean hands. These results are successful and they contribute to humanity,” Nachshon said.

Building Resilience Against Violent Extremism, Insurgency and Terrorism (BRAVEIT), a Non-governmental Organisation, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari over the successes of the military in the fight against insurgency.

The Director of Operations, BRAVEIT, Mr Lawrence Audu, gave the commendation while briefing newsmen on “Counter Terrorism and Maritime Safety Under Buhari: Encomium for the Nigerian Navy” on Tuesday in Abuja.

Audu said that Nigeria had made landmark achievements in various strata of the polity particularly in the area of security in spite of some daunting challenges, which he said he described as deliberately inflicted.

He said that almost 19 local government areas in the North East were under the control of the Boko Haram terrorists prior to 2015 when President Buhari came to power.

He said that the once dreaded terrorist group had been reduced to mere ragtag groups who only preyed on selected soft targets in the region.

According to him, it took the foresight of President Buhari to appoint one of Nigeria’s war tested and most decorated Generals in person of Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai as the then Chief of Army Staff to lead an onslaught against the criminals.

“Within five years the result is there for every unbiased eye to see.

“A more professional and organised army expanded units and commands in addition to morale boosting welfare for troops not to talk massive infrastructural development in all formations across the country.

“Buratai, we are proud to say, left an indelible footprint on the sands of time.

“In the Northeast Theatre of Operations, there has been a sustained push by our gallant troops, it has been one success story or another.

“Following the introduction of home-made solutions to tackling insurgency in addition to the acquisition of platforms and equipment to prosecute the war as well as training exercises for troops who are now fully acquainted with this nature of asymmetric warfare.

“Today, over 83,000 terrorists have surrendered to troops in various locations following sustained push by the military to root out remnants who still hibernate in some locations of the northeast,” he said.

Audu said the military had also improved the security situation in the North West, where bandits held sway for some times, displacing villages, killing innocent civilians and kidnapping for ransom.

He said the achievements were made possible by the existing synergy among security agencies with the massive support being given by President Buhari.

The group also commended the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Awwal Gambo, for his dynamic and pragmatic leadership that had changed the landscape of operations for the better.

According to him, a recent visit to Baga road fish market in Maiduguri witnessed a heightened activity as business has resumed fully with traders from all across the country converging for the purpose of trading.

”This has been made-possible by the presence of the of the Navy’s elite Special Operations Forces (SOFs) and the Nigerian Navy’s elite Special Boat Service – which is unmatched among SOFS in Africa, at the Lake Chad basin who have completely rooted out terrorists operating in the region.

“Baga in Borno is now safe now and people are fishing. This is the Same with the issue of pirates along Nigeria’s coastal waters where the Nigerian Navy has continued to frustrate the efforts of economic saboteurs.

“We now see pirates both local and international being arraigned in courts, ” he said.

According to him, the Nigerian Navy whose primary responsibility is to protect the nation’s maritime environment of about 84,000 square nautical miles, including the entire Gulf of Guinea (GoG), about 574,800 square nautical miles spanning 2,874nm from Senegal to Angola, has no doubt become a formidable force among navies in Africa and across the world.

“The Nigerian Navy has evolved over time, making it better placed to handle maritime crisis management, while ensuring the Nigerian Navy’s successes was complemented by the deployment of state- of-the-art technology such as the Navy’s Falcon Eye surveillance system, which was inaugurated in July 2021.

“This has made it possible for the Nigerian Navy to be prepared to effectively combat all forms of maritime crime within its area of jurisdiction,” he added.

Audu said that the Falcon Eye – Surveillance system had prevented the theft of over three billion barrels of Nigeria’s crude oil in the last four years.

He said that bringing an end to maritime-related crimes had also helped to improve the lives and livelihoods of those communities most affected by these illegal activities.

The Chairman of the group, Prof. Khalifa Dikwa, urged the government to be courageous in exposing and punishing the supporters and sponsors of terrorism with a view to finally defeating insurgency.

Dikwa said that lack of patriotism on the part of some powerful individuals in the country in connivance with some foreigners were responsible for the high level of insecurity in the country.

On his part, Mr Abba Aji, former Commander, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Borno, said that terrorism was planted in Borno to destabilise the state because of the enormous mineral resources that the state was blessed with.

Aji accused some foreign nations for being behind the activities of Boko Haram and Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in the North East based on his experience in the battle field.

According to him, Nigeria has won the war because Borno is now has peace and economic activities have resumed in many places including Lake Chad.

He expressed concern that more than 40,000 children were orphaned as a result of insurgency in Borno alone, adding that addressing the challenge was paramount because it was another time bomb if not checked. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Lizzy Okoji

Jerusalem, Jan. 17, 2023 (NAN) Israel’s Hadassah Hospital has expressed willingness to support African countries to improve their health sectors  by sharing best practices, developing research as Hadassah Hospitals is already at the  forefront  of global innovations.

Ms Barbara Sofer, Israel Director of Public Relations and Communications, Hadassah Office in Israel made this known on Tuesday in Jerusalem, while briefing some Nigerian Journalists on a tour to the hospital in Israel.

This is also as Sofer disclosed the several breakthroughs in research and procedures that Hadassah Hospital have recorded making it the solution center for terrible conditions.

One of such breakthroughs Sofer disclosed is a treatment for bone marrow cancer, Myeloma which is less expensive in Hadassah Hospitals and affordable for patients from across the world.

“One of the latest things we are very proud of is this new treatment for multiple Maloma.

“Getting it in the U.S cost money, but here our doctor has managed to legally create a less expensive version of this.

“And something that will be possible for not only our country but throughout the world and in affordable places that do not have the budget.

“So it is a very innovative treatment with a very high success rate. Israel’s Hadassah hospital develops breakthrough affordable treatment for cancer.

“We have a pro promising treatment for macro-degeneration and also is based on stem cells, Israel has an advantage that we are of as one of the counties that have stem cells available as opposed to the United States when they were banned to use this embryo stem cells.

“We now have treatment for macular degeneration using stem cells, a breakthrough treatment is back surgery where many people can have broken backs and they cannot undergo surgery because they are frail, we also have the wake surgery.

“That is the direction we are working in high tech innovations,” Sofer said.

Hadassah Hospital, Isreal

Ms Suzzie Benvenziti, Executive Director, Hadassah Office in Israel said that the hospital operates an open-door policy which makes it open to everyone irrespective of religion, and race.

Benvenziti said that the hospital which is innovative and reassert hub has been able to thrive in Israel amidst several challenges

“The hospital has an open-door policy treating everybody without regards to religion, race and nationality and same is with the staff working here coming from every background.

“For this reason, in 2005, Hadassah hospitals were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and this is really one of the core elements of our values of the hospital.

“The Hospital is a Center of excellence with over 200 research projects happening here at every time, we swerve more than 1 million people annually and we are at the fore front of innovation worldwide.

“Various departments have been named on top of their field, various projects have been recognized, acquired by companies from across the world,” Benvenziti said.

Holgar Fung, Anaesthesia Specialist in the hospital said that there is a lot that African countries can learn from Hadassah hospital to improve medi-care in the continent.

Fung, a Cameroonian doctor in the center urged African governments to build health infrastructure, equip them, regular trainings of medical personnel, improve and carryout more procedures and treatments, conduct researches to meet global standards.

“I am very hopeful about the African continent because there are more and more awareness because of the internet and the younger generation is becoming more and aware.

“On infrastructure, we need to have structures, not only build but equip. We need to train people, and also we need to create linkages.

“When it comes to training, we have a lot of medical schools on the continent but the problem is we do not encourage the culture of research which is really key and the center piece at Hadassah because the more you research the more you innovate, the more possibility you have to help people.

Another thing on the structure is procurement of logistics, open market and non-monopolisation. Because of greed, only one person wants to control the whole chain for personal gains. We should work on ourselves for collective benefits.

“We need to improve our offers of health care, because most of our people go to India  and the truth is, Indi is not better than ours.

“Increase the numbers of procedure we do and this can only be possible if we train more people, we need to buy equipment improve in supply chain management,” Fung said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

An NGO, JACCO’s Charity International, has tasked politicians across the country to play by the rule to ensure a violent-free and fair general elections.

Queen Jodie Frank, the founder of the NGO, made the call at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.

Frank is Miss Africa United Nations 2022 and also the Peace Ambassador with Universal Peace Federation.

She said that as the election was drawing near, it had become imperative for political parties, their candidates and supporters to ensure that peace reigned before, during and after the elections.

“In politics there must be winners and losers; however, whatever the outcome of the elections, we want all political parties, their candidates and supporters to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship,” she said.

This, according to her, is to ensure peace and that no blood of any Nigerian was worth the political ambition of a candidate or party.

She urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to provide a level playing ground for all political parties and their candidates.

She said that security agencies should obey the rules of engagement and do everything possible to ensure violence free elections.

“While the campaigns are still on, it is important to call on political parties and their candidates to restrict themselves to issue-based campaign,” she said.

According to her, candidates should be able to tell Nigerians how they hope to address the myraids of challenges bedeviling the country rather than engage in mudslinging and name calling.

She further said it was time the government prosecuted those making statements capable of igniting violence before, during and after the election.

She called on Nigerians, not just the youth, to participate in the general elections and ensure that it was credible and without violence.(NAN) www.nannews.ng
