The celebration started with series of activities including Jumma’at prayer on Jan. 6, at National Mosque and Interdenominational Christian service on Jan. 8.

He said that there were other sporting activities organised to mark the day, adding that it was the first time the armed force would partner with NGF to organise a golf tournament.

He said that apart from golf, many other sport activities were also lined up for the occasion.

Also, Otumba Olusegun Runsewe, the President of NGF and Director-General, National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), commended the CDS for approving the partnership for the tournament.

Runsewe said there was the need to celebrate those that laid down their lives for the peace and unity of Nigeria.

He said that Nigeria had moved to the next level of golf development in line with international standard.

According to him, the International Standard is that any measure on a golf course must be branded.

“So, I’m happy to show you that if you go on the course now every measure has this international standard.

Court dismisses sacked Action Alliance chairman’s suit against Kwankwaso, Omo-Aje, others

By Taiye Agbaje
A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, dismissed a suit filed by Mr Kenneth Udeze, the sacked national chairman of Action Alliance (AA), against Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and others.
Justice Emeka Nwite, in a judgment, held that Udeze, who was no longer a member of AA going by the evidence before him, lacked locus standi to institute the suit in the name of the party.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Udeze had, in the name of AA, filed the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1154/22 to challenge the listing of Mr Kwankwaso and Bishop Isaac Idahosa as presidential and vice presidential candidates of NNPP by INEC.
While AA was the plaintiff, INEC, NNPP, Kwankwaso and Idahosa were 1st to 4th defendants respectively.
Udeze had prayed the court to declare that INEC lacked the lawful power to list Kwankwaso and Idahosa as NNPP presidential and vice presidential candidates for the 2023 general elections having ascertained that NNPP did not submit their names to the electoral umpire at the date of close of nomination specified by the Electoral Act, 2022, among other reliefs sought.
But the National Chairman of AA, Dr Adekunle Omo-Aje and his National Secretary, Suleiman Abdulrasheed, had filed a motion for joinder, telling the court that they were necessary and interested parties in the suit.
Justice Nwite, in a ruling, had ordered the plaintiff to amend the originating summons and joined Omo-Aje and Abdulrasheed as 5th and 6th defendants respectively.
In their preliminary objection to the amended originating summons, Omo-Aje and Abdulrasheed, through their lawyer Oba Maduabuchi, SAN, said that the action purported to have been commenced by AA, did not emanate from them.
They argued that by the constitution of AA, only the national legal adviser on the instructions of the national chairman could institute an action for the party.
According to them, neither the national chairman nor the national legal adviser instructed that this suit be instituted.
They said that Udeze, who filed the suit in the name of the party, was no longer a member of the party after his suspension and subsequent expulsion from AA.
They cited a number of court orders, including Court of Appeal judgment, to back their arguments.
They said that the judgement had neither been appealed nor set aside by a court of competent jurisdiction.
But Udeze, through his lawyer, argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to make an order on the leadership tussle of the party, among others.
Delivering his judgment on Wednesday, Justice Nwite said that the 1st to 4th defendants did not file any process, hence, they did not have any defence in the suit.
The judge, however, said that Omo-Aje and Abdulrasheed (5th and 6th defendants), who filed application, asked the court to strike out the suit for being incompetent.
“They said the suit is not competent because it was not authorised by appropriate authority.
“That the people who initiated the action did not have the right to initiate the action.
“That the suit was not directed by the national chairman of the party that whoever that did that was a meddlesome interloper, asking the court to strike it out,” he said.
He said that they argued that those who initiated the suit were not executive members of AA, hence, they lacked locus.
The judge, who said that the issue of jurisdiction is important and must be decided first, said a case is competent when it is properly instituted, its subject matter is within the court jurisdiction and comes through due process of law.
“There is no gainsaying that the initiator of this suit has no locus standi to initiate this suit
“Where the plaintiff lacks locus standi to institute an action, the court lacks jurisdiction to consider the suit on its merit.
“In view of this, I am of the view that this suit is incompetent and therefore struck out,” he declared.(NAN)(www.namnews.ng)

INEC has no plans to postpone 2023 elections, says Yakubu

54 total views today

By Emmanuel Oloniruha

The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, says the commission is not contemplating any adjustment to the elections’ timetable, let alone postpone the 2023 general elections.

Yakubu stated this at the presentation of electronic copy of the 93,469,008 voter register to leaders of political parties on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that more than ever before the commission was more prepared for the 2023 general elections and had now successfully implemented 11 out of the 14 activities on schedule for the elections.

“Already, substantial quantities of sensitive and non-sensitive materials have been deployed to various locations across the country.

“The last batch of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) has been received while the ongoing configuration of the critical technology in readiness for elections will soon be completed. In the last two days, we commenced the airlifting of other sensitive materials to States across the country.

“Already, some of the materials for 17 States in three geo-political zones have been delivered. Furthermore, 13,868,441 Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) have been printed, delivered to States and are being collected by citizens as new voters or by existing voters who applied for transfer or replacement of cards as provided by law.

He added that similarly, following the display of the voters’ register nationwide and the conclusion of claims and objections by citizens, a new national register of voters has been compiled.

“In short, at no time in the recent history of the Commission has so much of the forward planning and implementation been accomplished 44 days ahead of a General Election.

“Therefore, the commission is not contemplating any adjustment to the election timetable, let alone the postponement of the general elections.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on Saturday Feb. 25, 2023 while Governorship and State Assembly elections will hold two weeks later on Saturday March 11, 2023.

“The repeated assurance by the security agencies for the adequate protection of our personnel, materials and processes also reinforces our determination to proceed.

“The 2023 general election will hold as scheduled. Any report to the contrary is not the official position of the Commission.’’

On the register voter, Yakubu said after the cleaning up of the data from the last Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) from June 2021 to  July 2022, where  9,518,188 new voters were added to the exiting 84,004,084 voters, the preliminary register voters was 93,522,272.

He said that when the register was presented to Nigerians for claims and objections as required by law, INEC received 53,264 objections from Nigerians to the prevalence of ineligible persons on the register by virtue of age, citizenship or death, which were verified and removed from the register.

“Consequently, the register of voters for the 2023 general election stands at 93,469,008. Of this cumulative figure, 49,054,162 (52.5 per cent) are male while 44,414,846 (47.5 per cent) are female.

“The distribution by age group shows that 37,060,399 (39.65 per cent ) are youth between the ages of 18 and 34; 33,413,591 (35.75 per cent ) are middle aged persons between the ages of 35 and 49;

“17,700,270 (18.94 per cent ) are elderly voters between the ages of 50 and 69 while 5,294,748 (5.66%) are senior citizens aged 70 and above.

“In terms of occupational distribution, students constitute the largest category with 26,027,481 (27.8%) of all voters, followed by 14,742,554 (15.8 per cent ) Farmers/Fishermen and 13,006,939 (13.9 per cent) housewives.

“The data on disability was not collected for previous registration. However, the cumulative figure of 85,362 persons from the recent CVR indicates that there are 21,150 (24.5 per cent ) persons with Albinism; 13,387 (15.7 per cent ) with physical impediment and 8,103 (9.5 per cent) are blind.”

Yakubu said that the softcopy of the breakdown and analysis would be uploaded to INEC website and social media platforms shortly.

He reiterated INEC commitment to transparent, credible and inclusive 2023 General Election, saying INEC would continue to take every step to protect the sanctity of the votes cast by citizens and to deal with infractions.

This according to Yakubu, includes the arrest and prosecution of persons that attempt to perpetuate illegality at Polling Units on Election Day, be they underaged voters or vote buyers.

On the collection of PVCs at 8,809 Registration Areas/Wards nationwide,  Yakubu said that locations for collection could be identified by sending a short text message to any of the two dedicated telephone lines

In his response IPAC Chairman, Yabagi Sani commended INEC efforts in ensuring that power is peacefully transferred in the country; in spite the challenges and plots by anti-democratic agents to truncate the process.

Sani, who was represented by IPAC General Secretary, Yusuf Dantalle said that political parties were resolved to ensure to support INEC, security agencies and traditional rulers for peaceful conduct of 2023 general election.

He said that party leaders were confidence in INEC technology for the election including BVAS and IReV for electronic transmission of result.

Sani said the deployment of the technology would discourage vote buying and situation where people write election results from their rooms and ask INEC official to declare it for people to go to court..

“It makes evidence that so many efforts are in place to ensure that this did not work but we are equally appealing to political party leaders in the country to see that power belongs to God and He gives it to whoever He will.

“We will try the best we can, but we political leaders must the country forward. We do not under intense pressure as if we don’t want this democracy or this election will not succeed.’’

NAN reports that Lagos has the highest number of voters with 7, 060,195, followed by Kano State with 5,921,370 and Kaduna with 4,335,208 registered voters.

Ekiti State has the least registered voters with 987,647, followed by Bayelsa with 1,056,862 and Yobe with 1,485,146  registered voters.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Abdulsami Abubakar unveils four-part book on insurgency

81 total views today

By Sumaila Ogbaje

Former Head of State, retired Gen. Abdulsami Abubakar unveiled a four-part book on crimes and insurgencies in Nigeria and other parts of the world on Wednesday in Abuja.

The series, which were titled: Preventing Crimes, Insurgencies and Desperate Migrations from developing nations, Africa, Latin America and other nations of the world.were written by Alhaji Iliyasu Buhari Maijega.

Commending the effort of the author, Abubakar said the presentation of the series was timely considering the security challenges bedevilling Nigeria.

He noted that insurgency and other violent crimes had been confronting Nigeria in the last 10 years, adding that the violent threats had spread all over the country over time.

He said the book threw light into the root causes of insurgency, stressing that it would help security agencies and the government to find lasting solution to insecurity in Nigeria and around the world.

Abubakar urged Nigerians and all stakeholders to read through the series with a view to understanding issues around insurgency and proffer solutions.

“I believe this book has thrown light into the root causes of insurgencies and I believe that it will help our security agencies and the government in tackling these challenges,” he said.

The author, Maijega said the abduction of Chibok School Girls and banditry in Northwest Nigeria inspired him to embark on research to unravel the root causes of insurgency and banditry.

Maijega said he saw the need to search for the causes of such events and other issues like the IPOB, Niger Delta agitation, and other issues around the world.

He said that he found similarities in the causes of insurgencies across the world which led him to go beyond Nigeria and Africa into Latin America, Asia and Europe.

He stressed that many had thought that Europe, for instance, had no problem but in his research, he came to understand that every nation had its own problems.

“For instance, we knew the Soviet Union was one country, but ethnic issues split it into 16 countries.

“Yugoslavia was one country but ethnicity split it into six countries. So that means it is not only Nigeria that is having ethnic problems making each ethnic group wanting to have its own nation,” he said.

Maijega noted that poverty, weak or lack of leadership were responsible for most insurgencies, adding that getting to the source or root cause of insecurity would help to solve the problem.

According to him, without knowing the cause of a disease or an ailment one cannot cure it.

“Nigeria’s population was only 45 million in 1960, but it is more than 220 million today, which means it has multiplied five times with multiplication of structures.

“You will need maybe at least five times the number of schools; you will need five times number of farms; you will need five times the number of homes and a lot of things,” he explained.

The author urged government to always adopt dialogue in finding solution to security challenges.

Reviewing the book, Dr Hamza Muhammed of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said the book highlighted ways to prevent social disorder and prevent crimes.

In the review read by the former Chairman, Association of Nigerian Authors, Abuja, Mr Patrick Oguejiofor, Muhammed said it highlighted the impact of COVID-19, problems in businesses, health, education, travels, and international relations.

He said the book also covered global climate change, contemporary programmes like early childhood education, human empowerment, nomads, fishermen, artisans, widows, orphans, and welfare policies.

Muhammed added that the series also highlighted the activities of cattle rustlers, bandits, kidnappers, insurgents and militants and the social impact on the citizenry. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Borno Central: Court dismisses suit against Kumalia as PDP senatorial candidate

90 total views today

By Taiye Agbaje
A Federal High Court, Abuja on Tuesday, dismissed a suit challenging the nomination of Mr Muhammed Kumalia as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate for the 2023 Borno Central Senatorial District election.
Justice Emeka Nwite dismissed the suit brought by Mr Jubrin Tatabe for being incompetent and lacking in merit.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tatabe had dragged his party, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kumalia and three others to court.
He had alleged unlawful substitution of his candidacy in the Feb. 25 senatorial election for the Borno Central Senatorial seat.
The plaintiff was said to have emerged winner of the May 23, 2022, primary poll of the PDP for the selection of candidate for the senatorial seat.
He was said to have, through a letter dated July 14, 2022, voluntarily withdrew as candidate of the party for the election.
Following, his withdrawal, the party then conducted a fresh primary on July 15, 2022 which then produced Kumalia as candidate of the PDP in the said senatorial poll.
The PDP, accordingly, submitted the name of Muhammed Kumalia to INEC, which the electoral umpire in turn published as candidate of the party for the Borno Central Senatorial election.
But in his suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1240/2022, the plaintiff alleged that contrary to the position of the defendants, he did not withdraw from the senatorial poll.
He argued that the letter of withdrawal including his signature was forged.
He therefore asked the court to set aside the said letter of withdrawal, sack Kumalia as candidate of the PDP and declare him the authentic candidate of the party in the said poll.
Delivering judgment in the matter on Tuesday, Justice Nwite agreed with the PDP and Kumalia that the case of the plaintiff was defective having been commenced through an originating summons instead of a writ of summons.
NAN reports that while in an originating summons, a case is determined by only documentary evidence, witnesses must be called to give oral and documentary evidence in a case initiated through a writ of summons.
The judge then held that the allegation of forgery was criminal in nature and must be proved beyond reasonable doubt.
He said that in a criminal case such as this, the failure of the plaintiff to call witnesses to prove his allegations was fatal to the case.
Justice Nwite consequently dismissed it.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
