A group of eminent leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara has rejected the Membership Registration Committee sent to the state by the National Secretariat of the party.

The leaders, operating under the aegis of APC Integrity Group, declared that the seven-member committee headed by Sen. John Damboyi is unfit for the registration exercise because of its bias.

They spoke on Friday in Ilorin at a media briefing on Wednesday’s violence that disrupted an APC stakeholders’ meeting held at the Banquet Hall in Ilorin.

The Chairman of the group and Wakilin Lafiaji, Umaru Shaaba, who addressed newsmen, said his members were concerned and embarrassed by the festering crisis in the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the briefing was attended by members of the group including Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo, Alhaji Niyi Adefila and Alhaji Isiaka Adio.

Others were Ibrahim Sharafadeen, Alhaji M.T. Manna, Hon. Ismaila Alale and Hon. Fatai Akorede.

Shaaba, who questioned the membership of the registration committee, said it could not deliver on the assignment given to it.

“ We want to state that from his operations thus far, Senator John Danboi and his members are unfit to do any meaningful party registration and revalidation in the state. We therefore reject the committee in its entirety,” Shaaba said.

Shaaba, who accused the committee of dealing only with the governor’s group, said there were four blocs within the party in the state.

According to him, the four tendencies in Kwara APC are those of Information and Culture Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Iyiola Oyedepo, Minister of State for Transportation, Sen. Gbemisola Saraki as well as the Fagbemi group to which the governor belongs.

“He has allowed the governor’s group to nominate and set up registration committees among his group in the 16 Local Government Areas of the state and 193 wards of the state.

“Even all the people that will register as members in all the polling centres are from his very minute group. That has been approved by Senator Danboyi Committee,” he said.

Shaaba also dismissed claims in some quarters that the caretaker chairman, Bashir Bolarinwa, came to the venue of the meeting with thugs.

“We consider the crisis as unnecessary as it is unreasonable.

“That is why all men of good conscience should come out to condemn the violence that the crisis engendered at the venue of the stakeholders meeting convened by the chairman and members of the registration and revalidation committee,” he added.

Shaaba, however, called on all members of the party in the three groups to go to their polling booths to register, adding that they should not be discouraged because of the ongoing crisis.

The chairman, who spoke with newsmen on the sidelines of the visit, urged the victims to see their travails as the price to pay in ensuring a thriving democracy.

He said the victims were in an upbeat mood and responding to treatment.

” I led members of the Kwara APC Caretaker Committee to the residences of some of our members who were assaulted by hoodlums at Kwara State Banquet Hall, venue of the APC stakeholders parley organised by the Sen. John Danboyi-led APC Membership Registration/Revalidation Committee.

” Among those visited were Alhaji Dantala Yaro, the State Treasurer and Wahab Adeshina, a member of the board of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA).

” Others are Mallam Lai Karatu, a Youth Leader; Alhaja Sidi Gidado, biological mother of our State Women Leader and Mr Salihu Elepo, Ilorin East LGA Secretary.

“These are known and respected stakeholders of the party in Kwara State.

“I implored the victims to see their travails as their sacrifices for democracy.

“I charged them to remain law abiding despite the unprovoked attacks. I extended the sympathies of the party to them all,” Bolarinwa said.

He assured the affected party members that their efforts would not be in vain, adding that they should keep hope alive.

Also speaking during the visit to him, Adesina said he was invited to the venue by Danboyi, the chairman of the membership registration committee sent to the state.

He said that on getting to the venue, he and others were not allowed in until the party’s chairman, Bolarinwa, called Danboyi.

On eventually entering the hall, he said a woman confronted Bolarinwa and held his clothes while trying to tear it before he was rescued by some party members.

Adesina said he was also thoroughly beaten and his clothes torn by thugs who accused him of being loyal to the Minister of State for Transportation, Sen. Gbemisola Saraki.

Adesina said he sustained a dislocation on his shoulder bone while his phone and other items were stolen.

Yaro, while narrating his ordeal, said he lost a tooth and sustained bruises during the attack on him.

Karatu, on his part, said he lost three pre-molar teeth as a result of the beating he sustained during the attack.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has again warned against plans by some persons and groups to exploit some fault lines to cause ethno-religious violence in some parts of the country.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Service, Dr Peter Afunanya, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Service had on Jan. 11 issued an alert of plans by some elements working with external forces to incite religious violence across the country.

The alert stipulated that the targeted States were Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Rivers, Oyo, Lagos and those in the South East.

It said the plans was to cause inter-religious conflicts and use their foot soldiers to attack some worship centres, religious leaders, personalities as well as key and vulnerable points.

Afunanya said the latest developments on the alert indicated desperate efforts by these groups to subvert public order.

He said that persons have continued to resort to inciting, unguarded and divisive statements, acts and to pit citizens against one another in order to apparently inflame the embers of tribal and religious discords.

“For the umpteenth time, the Service strongly warns these elements to desist forthwith from their (planned) nefarious acts or face the full wraths of the law.

“The DSS will, in collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies, take necessary steps to ensure the safety of lives and property of the citizenry,” he said.

The Nigerian Army has called on members of the public to ignore a report by a coalition that it conducted secret trails and executed six soldiers of Igbo extraction.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a group which identified itself as a coalition of rights activists and scholars, on Tuesday made the allegation in a press statement.

The Nigerian Army made the call on its social media handle, tagged the allegation as false, fake news and malicious.

A senior military source, who pleaded for anonymity, dismissed the allegation, saying it was impossible for the Nigerian army to conduct secret trial of any soldier.

The officer said the army usually set up a general court-martial publicly to try erring soldiers or officers, adding that such court-martial must have a President and other members.

“There is no iota of truth whatsoever that six soldiers were tried secretly and executed by the Nigerian army on Jan. 25 as alleged.

“The promoters of that allegation are the enemies of Nigerian who are trying so hard to instigate tribal or ethnic crisis in the country,” he said.

Also, a Coalition of Youth Groups in Nigeria has dismissed the allegation of secret trial and execution of six soldiers of Igbo extraction against Nigerian Army by a certain coalition on Tuesday.

The youth, which was superintended by the Emerging Leaders Forum of Nigeria (ELFON), stated this in a communique issued at the end of the meeting of leaders of the youth coalition on Tuesday in Abuja.

The youth groups comprised of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN), Niger Delta Youth Council, Igbozurumee Youth Council, Arewa Youth Council, O’odua Youth Vanguard, Nigerian Students Parliament (NSP), and 34 other youth organisations.

The youth called on the Nigerian Army to consider legal action against the purveyor of the fake news to serve as deterrent to other hired mischievous propagandists who are all out for the highest bidders.

“Generally, from our independent investigation, there is no iota of truth. We challenge him to produce evidence as we believe the names he mentioned are fake.

“We will no longer tolerate any unpatriotic behaviour borne out of mere quest for cheap and stupid popularity. We are poised to ensure that Nigeria remains one United indivisible country against all human machinations,” the group said.

He commended UBEC for its continued support in the adoption of Jolly Phonics in government schools across Nigeria.

“UBEC has really recognised the tremendous impact that Jolly Phonics has been having on literacy levels in Nigeria’s government schools and has taken it on as one of its flagship programmes.

” This has helped us to initiate new projects across the country. Jolly Phonics is now being taught in all 36 states and FCT.

” This is truly amazing and will help to improve the reading and writing abilities of millions of children in the years ahead,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr Patrick Uzu, Nigeria Country Director at ULS, commended the exceptional support and partnership offered by Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board.
