Abuja, Jan. 17, 2021 (NAN) Musu Sawo, a Gambian change maker and women rights advocate, has emerged winner of the 2020 Daily Trust African of the Year award.

A statement by Nura Daura, acting Chief Executive Officer of Daily Trust, said a seven-member award selection committee, announced 30-year-old Sawo as the winner.

The committee, led by the former President of Botswana, Dr Festus Mogae, said the award was for her commitment to ending violence against girls and women including child marriage and female genital mutilation.

Married at the age of 14 and widowed at 21 with no inheritance, Musu, who had also gone through female genital mutilation as a child, is also engaged in addressing the injustices women face daily across Africa.

“I say to the girls: come out and be the change that you can be because your children may be victims,” Sawo said while explaining her motivation.

Sawo, who is an Internationally Human Right Law lecturer at the University of The Gambia, started advocating for girls’ rights at age nine, including against child marriage, which she fell hostage to five years later.

National Coordinator for Think Young Women, she is a recipient of the 2017 Vera Chirwa Award from the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria. South Africa and recognized as one of the 100 most influential young persons in West Africa by the Confederation of West African Youths in 2018.

She also received the ‘Inspiring Gambian Award 2018’ by the People’s Choice Award for Excellence in The Gambia.

Sawo’s selection by the Daily Trust was that in this period of COVID-19, women have been particularly impacted negatively, especially during the lockdown when a lot of husbands lost their jobs, resulting in domestic violence in the homes.

“So, with Musu’s championing the rights of women in Africa, which is largely a traditional society, she is deemed to be promoting a great cause, and therefore found worthy of selection for the award.

“Musu Bakoto deserves the award for her continuous work to end violence against girls and women, including child marriage and female genital mutilation”.

The African of the Year Award project was instituted in 2008 by Daily Trust to recognize and reward Africans who have made extra-ordinary contributions to human development in any part of the continent, and in any sphere of human endeavour.

Congolese medical doctor, Denis Mukwege, was the first winner in 2008 and 11 years after the recognition, he won the Noble Peace Prize for his work of treating abused and raped women in his war-torn country.

The award comes with a cash prize of 10,000 U.S. dollars.

The presentation of the this year’s award will be done sometime in March in Banjul, The Gambia. (NAN)

The Nigeria Agribusiness Register (NAR) said it would partner National Shea Products Association of Nigeria (NASPAN) to trade shea butter as commodity exchange for the Nation’s economic benefit.

Its founder, Mr Roland Oroh, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) on Friday in Abuja while discussing the benefits of trading of agricultural products internationally.

Oroh said shea nut kernel was one of the commodities that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recommended to be included as tradable commodity in Nigeria commodity exchanges.

He said it was agreed by SEC that part of its implementation of a 10-year Capital Market Master Plan was to constitute a technical committee on Commodities Trading Ecosystem.

One of the recommendations of the committee was to identify commodities with good supply base in Nigeria for inclusion as a tradable commodity in the Nigeria Commodity Exchanges.

According to him, Nigeria has the largest number of shea trees in the world and contributes over 60 per cent of the total shea nut produced annually in West Africa.

Oroh said: “Nigeria can supply shea nut kernel to local buyers and those in West Africa while developing a local processing industry.”

He said that a panel session held at the second agribusiness networking (Agnet) titled, “Trading Shea Nuts and Shea Butter in Commodity Exchanges in Nigeria: How to Make It Happen” noted that shea was a tradable commodity.

He said that the Representatives of AFEX and the Lagos Commodity & Futures Exchange were of the view that the benefit of trading shea would increase quality and sustainability of the product from the production areas.

Oroh said NASPAN, the Agribusiness Register, the Commodity Brokers Association of Nigeria and the nation’s commodity exchanges and other stakeholders would work to make shea trading on the nation’s exchanges a reality.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NAR is supporting food and agribusiness investments in Nigeria and West Africa to scale and also turn impact-oriented investment intentions into actual investments.

They are the agribusiness investment facilitation arm of Commodities Development Initiative (CDI) a commercial NGO registered under the corporate laws of Nigeria.

NAR’s mission is to create impact and increase inclusion by supporting agribusiness start-ups and scale-ups with information, grants and access to impact capital and product markets.

This is through several products and services including the AgNet event, which brings fund providers and project promoters together to make commitments.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has urged youths to fight unemployment with entrepreneurial and vocational skills.

Prof. Obi gave the charge on Friday in Calabar when the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Cross River Chapter Executive, led by its Chairman, Comrade Daniel Obo paid her a courtesy call in Calabar.

The VC said her administration would strengthen the Entrepreneurial and Vocational Centres in the University in order to provide the needed training for the youths.

According to her, Nigeria has been faced with unemployment challenge, hence the need to equip the youth with skills that can get them jobs beyond their paper qualifications.

“When these centres are up and running, we are going to train a good number of youths from the institution’s host communities and also give them a token to start their businesses.

“At all times, we must focus our energy on building the youths because they are a strong force. I have so much respect for the young ones because no one can ever predict what they will become tomorrow,” she said.

She decried the destruction of properties in the University by hoodlums who hijacked the #EndSars protest in Calabar on Oct. 24, 2020, adding that the destruction had compromised the growth in the institution.

The VC told the NYCN delegation that she is working on a programme with a view to have a session with young girls in order to mentor and build their capacity.

She granted approval to the request made by Chairman of the Council, that youth should be considered for employment and for her to also pick one of them as her Special Assistant on Youth Affairs.

Speaking earlier, Obo said that the visit was to congratulate the VC on her appointment as the first female VC of the institution, 45 years after its creation.

Obo commended the VC for the appointments she has made so far, adding that she has been very balanced in selecting her management team.

He described the VC as a mother and a disciplinarian who has mentored her students to greatness in the past 30 years of her service in the institution.

“The news of your emergence as the first female VC of Unical was widely celebrated because you merited the position; as a mother, we are so proud of you.

“You have become a role model to the younger generation. I want to assure you that the 2.8 million youths in Cross River are solidly behind you,” he said.

North Korea shows off new submarine-launched missiles

North Korea has displayed what appeared to be a new submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) at a military parade in Pyongyang, state media reported on Friday.

The show of military might have capped more than a week of rare political meetings.

Clad in a leather coat and fur hat, leader Kim Jong Un smiled and waved as he oversaw the parade in Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung Square, photos by state media showed.

The parade featured rows of marching soldiers, as well as a range of military hardware including tanks and rocket launchers.

At the end, a number of what analysts said appeared to be new variants of short-range ballistic missiles and SLBMs rolled into the square on trucks.

“The world’s most powerful weapon, submarine-launch ballistic missiles, entered the square one after another, powerfully demonstrating the might of the revolutionary armed forces,” news agency KCNA reported.

North Korea has test-fired several SLBMs from underwater, and analysts say it is seeking to develop an operational submarine to carry the missiles.

Photos released by state media showed the SLBM was labelled Pukguksong-5, potentially marking an upgrade over the Pukguksong-4 that was unveiled at a larger military parade in October.

“The new missile definitely looks longer,” Michael Duitsman, a researcher at the California-based James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), said on Twitter.

Unlike that October parade, the latest event did not showcase North Korea’s largest intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), which are believed to be able to deliver a nuclear warhead to anywhere in the United States.

The parade in itself was not intended to be a provocation but was a worrying sign of Pyongyang’s priorities, said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul.

“The economy is severely strained from pandemic border closures, policy mismanagement and international sanctions.

“Despite or perhaps because of this, Kim Jong Un feels the need to devote scarce resources to another political-military display,” he said.

On Wednesday, Kim Yo Jong, the sister of Kim Jong Un and a member of the ruling party’s Central Committee, criticised South Korea’s military for saying it had detected signs of a parade in Pyongyang on Sunday.

The ECOWAS Court of Justice has invested 345,126 U.S. dollars in  digitization of its processes and the conduct of virtual court sessions, the President of the Court has said.

Justice Edward Amoako Asante made this known in a goodwill message at the opening of the 2020 virtual session of the ECOWAS Parliament on Wednesday.

He said that the deployment of the virtual technology has enabled the court to function optimally in safety in spite of the raging COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that the expenditure was committed for the procurement of video conference equipment and related materials after the initial disruptions to the Court’s judicial functions which affected 60 cases scheduled for both hearing and judgment during the first quarter of 2020.

“The Court realised that in a post COVID-19 world, it was imperative to migrate to the virtual technology infrastructure in order to continue to discharge its role,” the President told regional parliamentarians.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports the the 2020 Second Ordinary Session of Parliament was postponed to January 2021 due to COVID-19 disruptions, and it is being held via virtual conference.

The session is specifically dedicated to the consideration of the community budget for 2021 among other things.

Asante also said the Court had to align its practice direction to the reality of the virtual technology, which along with the deployment of the technology, resulted in the efficient and uninterrupted disposal of cases.

He said that it also resulted in improvement in turnaround time for Court hearings and a general improvement in the management of case files.

Its other benefits, he added, include savings on legal costs consisting of travel air tickets of Litigants, Agents, Lawyers and Witnesses as well as logistics and hotel costs.

He added that it also eliminated the personal contacts between the Bench and the Lawyers, Agents, Litigants and witnesses with the attendant risks of infection.

The President urged the Parliamentarians, who are considering the budget of the Community, to support the proposal by the Court to strengthen its Information Technology capacity.

“In doing so, they will be making an important contribution to the survival and functioning of the Court while protecting the huge community funds that have been invested in the virtual technological  infrastructure that has become the livewire of its operations,” he said.

Presidency frowns at Forum’s ultimatum on Father Kukah

The Presidency has frowned at the reported ultimatum given to the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev Matthew Kukah to tender apology to the Muslim Ummah over his recent “malicious comments” against Islam, or leave the state.

The ultimatum was said to have been handed over to Kukah by a group based in Sokoto, Sokoto State.

Reacting to the ultimatum in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, condemned the decision of the group, saying their action was contrary to the nation’s Constitution.

He said groups such as the Muslim Solidarity Forum must be seen to share and uphold the country’s multi-religious principles.

Shehu, however, cautioned that individuals like Kukah must respect the feelings of his fellow Nigerians in his private and public utterances.

The statement read in part: ”The reported ultimatum by a group based in Sokoto, “Muslim Solidarity Forum,” calling on the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev Matthew Hassan Kukah to tender an unreserved apology to the entire Muslim Ummah over his recent “malicious comments” against Islam, or quietly and quickly leave the state, is wrong because it is not in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

”Under our Constitution, every citizen has the right to, among others, freedom of speech and expression, the right to own property and reside in any part of the country, and the right to move freely without any inhibitions. Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity.

”The right for all religions to co-exist is enshrined in this country’s Constitution. The duty of the government, more so, this democratic government, is to ensure that the Constitution is respected. But all must respect the rights and sensitivities of their fellow Nigerians.

”Father Kukah has greatly offended many with his controversial remarks against the government and the person of the president, with some even accusing him of voicing anti-Islamic rhetoric.

”On matters such as these, responsible leadership in any society must exercise restraint. Knee-jerk reactions will not only cause the fraying of enduring relationships, but also the evisceration of peaceful communities such as Sokoto, the headquarters of the Muslim community as beacon of pluralism and tolerance.

”The Sultanate has historically had good relations with followers of all faiths. That is why Father Kukah was received on his arrival in Sokoto with friendship and tolerance.

”Under our laws, groups or factions must not give quit notices, neither should they unilaterally sanction any perceived breaches. Where they occur, it is the courts of law that should adjudicate. Unilateral action is not the way to go.

”Groups such as the Muslim Solidarity Forum must be seen to share and uphold the country’s multi-religious principles. And individuals like Father Kukah must respect the feelings of his fellow Nigerians in his private and public utterances.”

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has handed over 22 under-aged children to the Kaduna State Ministry of Human Science and Social Development to be united with their parents.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Director-General of NAPTIP, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim on Wednesday in Abuja.

Suleiman-Ibrahim has frowned at the increasing rate of child trafficking, employment of children for begging and other exploitative labour in the country.

Suleiman-Ibrahim said that the children were rescued by the military, which intercepted a Peugeot J5, on Jan. 8, conveying them.

She explained that they were being taken from Kwasalo village in Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State to Nasarawa State for exploitative labour

Suleiman-Ibrahim further explained that the military handed them over to NAPTIP.

The director-general said that the children were cramped into the bus without windows and were weak at the point of rescue.

The NAPTIP boss said that investigation into the case was ongoing but owing to the age of the children, the agency deemed it necessary to re-unite them with their families through the Kaduna State Government.

“This is important to ensure that the children are available in furtherance of investigation and possible prosecution of their traffickers.

“The driver of the bus is in custody as efforts are being expedited to ensure the arrest of other accomplices implicated in the case,’’ she said.

Suleiman-Ibrahim cautioned parents against giving out their children under any guise as they could be subjected to all forms of abuses and exploitation.

She also advised them to desist from abusing their children as perpetrators would be severely punished.

The director-general called on state governments to device effective strategies in dealing with child trafficking as it impacts negatively on them.

She thanked the military for what she described as highly professional conduct in the interception of the children and handing them over to the agency for appropriate actions.

“I appreciate the existing collaboration between the two institutions.

“We also thank the Kaduna State Government for the prompt response and demonstration of love to its people by coming to the rescue of these children.

“This type of collaboration should be emulated by other states to rid the country of the crime of trafficking in persons,’’ Sulaiman-Ibrahim said.

Responding, Mr Usman Hassan, an official of the Kaduna state ministry of human science and social development, assured that efforts would be made to re-unite the children with their parents.

Hassan promised that all those connected with the trafficking of the victims would be prosecuted in line with the existing law of the state.
