The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) says it has secured more than 600 convictions and rescued over 20,000 victims of human trafficking since inception in 2003.

Mr Ganiu Aganran, Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, Benin Zonal Office, disclosed this on Monday in Benin during the opening of a two-day awareness workshop for law enforcement agencies in Edo.

The event, organised by the Committee for the Support of Dignity of Women (COSUDOW) in collaboration with NAPTIP, is to strengthen the capacity of security personnel to combat trafficking in persons (TIP).

“NAPTIP has worked tirelessly to bring traffickers to justice and support survivors,” he said.

The commander identified prevention, prosecution, protection, partnership and policies as the 5Ps approach adopted by the agency to tackle the menace.

“NAPTIP’s approach combines intelligence-driven investigations, inter-agency collaboration, and victim support services to combat trafficking effectively,” he added.

He regretted that Edo remained one of Nigeria’s most affected regions due to poverty, unemployment, lack of education, and weak law enforcement, among others.

Prof. Eric Okojie, who spoke on the aims of the workshop, said the Nigeria Conference of Women Religious (NCWR) was concerned about the exploitation of Nigerian women and girls abroad.

As a result of this, he said the women conference felt a strong need to fight to liberate the daughters of Africa from the shackles of traffickers.

Okojie noted that majority of trafficked victims were women, usually sexually exploited in their desire for greener pastures by their traffickers.

“In 2020, the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimated that 67 per cent of people trafficked for sexual exploitation are women while 46 per cent of trafficked victims are women too,” he said.

He commended the women group for ensuring that liberated young girls and women become empowered, active, valued and protected as well as rise above cultural nuances that mitigate against their dignity.

Earlier in her address of welcome, Justina Odunukwe, National Coordinator of COSUDOW, urged participants at the workshop to actively engage in discussions and collaborate towards solutions that could make a lasting impact.

She emphasised that the workshop was a call to action, an opportunity to reaffirm collective responsibility to eradicate human trafficking and irregular migration.

According to her, this will build a safer society where people can thrive without seeking dangerous routes for survival. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Stakeholders canvass rotational presidency as panacea to ethnic agitations

Stakeholders canvass rotational presidency as panacea to ethnic agitations

Some stakeholders have called for insertion of rotational presidency among the six geo-political zones in the constitution to further enhance political stability and address ethnic agitations.

The stakeholders made the call in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

One of the stakeholders, Chief Ugochukwu Nnam, President, Initiative for Leadership Development and Change (ILDC), said only a rotational presidency among the six geo-political zones could restore people’s confidence in the country’s democratisation process.

“It will reduce agitations and bring hope to all because every section or zone is sure of taking its own turn at the appropriate time.

“The challenge of agitations and marginalisation will be over because every geo-political zone has a potential president.

“Rotational presidency will also engender inclusiveness and equity,” Nnam said.

In his own view, a former governorship candidate in Imo, Dr Bennett Lemchi, said rotation of the presidency among the geo-political zones would rescue the country from ethno-religious suspicion and acrimony.

According to him, no geo-political zone will grumble again because it has its own turn for its indigene to be at the helm of affairs.

Lemchi, while commending the national assembly for the ongoing constitution review, reminded the lawmakers of the imperatives of inserting rotational arrangement of the presidency among the six geo-political zones in the document.

“Rotational presidency will bring about equity and fairness. It will be the best for the country,” he said.

Also speaking, a Public Affairs Analyst, Alhaji Tanko Idris, called on true patriots to support the rotational arrangement.

Idris, who described Nigeria as a heterogeneous country with religious and ethnic pluralities, said that the arrangement would further promote unity in the country.

“If rotational presidency is inserted in the constitution, there will be peaceful transition of power from one geo-political zone to another, thus enhancing economic stability as ethnic and religious suspicions will end naturally,” he said.

To Mr Etim Bassey, Convener, Nigeria for Peace Initiative (NFPI), rotational presidency will serve as panacea to inter-ethnic rancour.

Bassey stated that it would also address various agitations, especially by minority groups.

He expressed the belief that such a move by the national assembly would have the support of Nigerians, as it would be a roadmap to national cohesion and inclusiveness. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Ikom cocoa processing plant can generate N900bn annually

Ikom cocoa processing plant can generate N900bn annually

The A A Universal Agro Company says Nigeria can earn N900 billion ($600m) annually from the Ikom Cocoa Export Processing Plant in Cross River when it becomes fully operational.

The Managing Director of the agro company, Mr Chris Agara, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar.

Agara, whose firm was the concessionaire of the cocoa processing plant, said he was in partnership with an Israeli company B and Co, a member of the LR Group, to turn around the cocoa industry in Nigeria.

“My firm has a contract grant agreement between the United States of America Government through the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).

“The contract is to carry out feasibility study and bankable business plan to farm and develop cocoa and cassava farms and value chains from farm to table, to international standards and best practice.

“It will be for local uses and export purposes,” he said.

The industrialist said adopting the firm’s protocols and methodology would increase cocoa yield from its present 400kg per hectare to 3.5 tons per hectare.

He urged on the Federal Government to lend their support to enable the firm access funds from the International Finance Institute.

“The Federal Government should support us because this funding we are trying to raise is from the International Finance Institute.

“So, we need guarantee from the Federal Government to raise this funding.

“We also need guarantee from the state government through a policy, to ensure that Cross River cocoa is processed in Cross River, because most of our cocoa is taken out of the state by these merchants.

“Our foreign partner is one of the largest agro companies in Israel. Their technology can improve our cocoa farm yields from less than half a ton to 3.5 to 4 tons, which we want to introduce to the farmers.

“You can see we are out for serious business. We want to regenerate cocoa.

“As we move on, we will also help the farmers regenerate their farms to higher and better production level,” he said.

Agara also said the grant from the United States (US), included cassava because it was processed into a lot that the US needed.

“You can get industrial starch, pellets for drugs, cassava flour, and even this, our fufu is in high demand for Nigerians in the US and Europe.

“The contract will also serve as an opening to Nigeria to deal directly with the United States government on agricultural products, particularly cocoa and cassava, which is not happening today.

“We are restricted and don’t ship directly to the US as we speak, so you can make your findings.

“We can also ship directly to the US. This will help our balance of trade and our economy.

“This is what we have spent so much of my energy, time, and money to develop and get to this stage,” he said.

Agara explained that the first production line of the cocoa processing plant was functional, had been test run and presently relied on generator to power the plant.

He also said that the second phase of the plant was integrated and would make use of renewable energy to run the entire process.

According to him, when completed, the second phase will use cocoa from the farmers directly.

“It would thus save the farmers the stress and the labour of having to use women and children to crack their cocoa pods and do their drying and the rest,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Agara has attributed the challenge of power to the delay in operation of the Ikom Cocoa Export Processing Plant.

He noted that the cost of production would be too much for the AA Universal Agro Company, if it decided to run the processing plant on diesel.

“There is no PHCN, and if you power it with diesel, you will run at a 1000 per cent loss because the cost of production will be too high.

“That is why we are constructing a renewable energy plant so that we can have our independent power supply while generator can serve as standby.

“That is why there have been delays. But with all this packaging we are putting together, by the time we take off fully, we can have a very dependent power source,’’ he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, has extolled the ongoing economic reforms being implemented by President Bola Tinubu, saying that they were already yielding positive results.

Ganduje made this statement during an empowerment programme organised by  the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, where 1,200 vehicles and motorcycles were distributed to party leaders in Kano.

He lauded the administration’s commitment to restructuring Nigeria’s economy, saying that the reforms have brought about greater stability.

“Under President Tinubu’s leadership, we have witnessed substantial progress in revitalizing the economy.

“These efforts are already yielding results, including improved infrastructure, job creation, and growth across various sectors.

“The recent reduction in food prices, the drop in petrol costs, and the appreciation of the naira are all direct outcomes of these reforms,” he explained.

According to him, the president holds Kano in high regard, which was why he appointed them to key positions.

They included the National Chairman of the ruling party, Deputy Senate President, two Ministers, Director-General of the National Productivity Centre and the Chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank, among others.

Ganduje commended Barau for his efforts in establishing the North-West Development Commission and expressed gratitude to the president as well.

The national chairman called on the people of the state to support the administration of Tinubu.

He also said that the distribution of vehicles and motorcycles was aimed at enhancing the socioeconomic well-being of the people, particularly party members.

The gesture, he said, was also expected to promote the party’s noble ideas.

Earlier,  Jibrin said that the initiative was aimed at empowering the members of the APC to achieve the party’s set objectives.

He stated that the motorcycles would be distributed to all APC ward and local government Chairmen in the 44 LGAs in the state.

The deputy senate president also said that a special package for youths ,women, teachers, students and other stakeholders would soon commence.

He said that it was aimed at ensuring the public benefits from the dividends of democracy.

“We are also planning to empower university graduates who have not secured white-collar jobs.

“Three graduates will be selected from each local government and will receive a loan of five million Naira to start small businesses,” he added.

Barau stated that Ganduje’s leadership style had significantly strengthened the party, positing that under his guidance, the party had achieved remarkable progress.

He also commended the president for his reforms aimed at advancing the country.

Jibrin urged the party’s members to unite in support of the president’s efforts to move the nation forward. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Don seeks stiffer law to discourage frequent defections by legislators

Don seeks stiffer law to discourage frequent defections by legislators

A don, Dr Lawrence Odeh, has called for enactment of a stiffer law to check frequent defections, particularly by serving legislators in the nation’s state and national parliaments.

Odeh, of Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Benson Idahosa University, Benin, said the stringent measures, if put in place, would further help on strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

The don stated these in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

“As a way out of the challenges of frequent defections by legislators to other political parties, I am of the view that stringent measures should be put in place to discourage such acts and strengthen democracy in the country.

“For example, a law should be enacted mandating the legislative leadership, upon receiving the report of a member or members defection, to immediately set-up a committee comprising legislators who have exhibited high level of integrity to investigate the reasons stated for their defections.

“The committee is to find out if the reasons are in line with the constitutional provisions that permit defections.

“If the decision for cross-carpeting violates constitutional provisions, the law to be enacted should compel the legislative leader to immediately declare the seats of the defectors vacant.

“Also, the findings of the proposed committee must be approved by majority members of the parliament in a plenary session,” he said.

Odeh further stated that the suggested legislation should state the period within which the legislative leader must constitute the committee.

He said that the committee must be given a time frame within which to conduct its investigation and submit the report of its findings.

“This institutional building approach and other similar ones suggested by various policy analysts, if effectively implemented, will, in no small measure, restore the institutional deficit that has adversely affected Nigeria’s democratic consolidation.

“It will also catalyse the nation’s progress toward the achievement of sustainable development,” the don said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Tinubu unveils Lagos-Ibadan Road expansion project

Tinubu unveils Lagos-Ibadan Road expansion project

President Bola Tinubu on Saturday launched the completed and ongoing 24km section, alongside the upcoming 48km section of the Lagos-Ibadan dual carriageway.

This includes Section One and the Lagos-Sagamu route in Lagos and Ogun, Phase Two.

Tinubu highlighted the importance of road infrastructure for socio-economic development.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the country’s transport network to enhance mobility and economic growth.

The President stated: “There is no doubt that road infrastructure plays a fundamental role in the socio-economic development of any nation.”

Quoting Norman Foster, he added: “Infrastructure is much more than roads and bridges; it is the foundation that sustains economic growth, facilitates mobility, and enhances the quality of life.”

He stressed his administration’s commitment to linking rural roads to urban centres, commercial hubs, and industrial corridors to maximise the nation’s resources and mineral deposits.

Tinubu, represented by Ogun Governor, Dapo Abiodun, said: “This strategic approach aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We are committed to rebuilding, expanding and modernising our national road networks, railways and airports, all vital to economic prosperity.”

He praised the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, for his dedication. He described Umahi as “the actualiser of our vision on road infrastructure” and “a right fit for purpose.”

Umahi noted that the President, represented by the Ogun Governor, will inaugurate both the completed/ongoing 24km section and the upcoming 48km section, ensuring momentum in spite of incomplete procurement.

He confirmed that palliative work had been undertaken as temporary repairs. “What we are doing today is part of the Lagos-Ibadan project, Phase Two,” he said.

Umahi outlined key components, including the Ogun River, Marlboro underpass, Wawa underpass, Arepo underpass, Sagamu-Iperu (24km), RCC Church interchange, two flyovers, and five pedestrian bridges.

“The next phase, which the representative of the President will flag off, is 48km by two, extending from Iperu to Ijebu Ode along the Sagamu-Ore route,” Umahi added.

He confirmed that the full 96km (48km by two) would be inaugurated, alongside completed palliative works, to maintain project continuity.

Umahi explained that the second part of the 48km stretch (Iperu to Ijebu Ode) faced a procurement issue. The process was flawed and required resubmission to the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) with a 30-day turnaround.

“The second leg of Phase Two, Section Two, of Lagos-Ibadan was wrongly procured. I directed its resubmission to the BPP, and in 30 days, work will commence.

“The Governor of Ogun, representing the President, will flag off both phases, even though Phase Two is not fully procured. In 15 days, the project will be awarded.

“It is better to flag off both today from Iperu, where the first 24km stops, to Ijebu Ode,” he said.

Umahi thanked the governor for his support and emphasised the project’s national significance. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won all 30 chairmanship and 332 councillorship seats in the local government election held on Saturday in Osun.

Mr Hashim Abioye, Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), announced the results on state-owned television, Osun Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC), in Osogbo.

Abioye stated that 18 political parties participated in the election.

“I want to announce that the local council election, conducted by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), has been successfully concluded.

“It was conducted in compliance with constitutional provisions, extant laws, regulations and guidelines.

“The election was held to fill vacancies in 332 wards and 30 local government areas of Osun State,” Abioye added.

He said 18 political parties contested, and the results have been submitted to the commission.

According to him, from the available results, PDP candidates in all 332 wards emerged as winners.

“Their names are listed in the schedule to this text. As Chief Returning Officer, I hereby declare each one duly elected chairmen and councillors of their respective areas.

“The results are available for anyone interested in certified true copies.

“For the 30 local government areas of Osun State, PDP candidates won all the seats,” he said.

Abioye apologised to the media for the commission’s failure to provide accreditation tags for election coverage.

He alleged that security agencies sealed the commission’s office, where the materials were kept.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the main opposition, the All Progressives Congress (APC), had earlier announced its withdrawal from the election.

The withdrawal was contained in a letter dated Feb. 17, signed by APC State Secretary, Alao Kamoru, and addressed to the Secretary of OSSIEC.

A copy of the letter obtained by NAN stated that APC would not participate, citing the Feb. 10 Court of Appeal ruling in Akure reinstating its sacked officials. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
