Rangers International Football Club of Enugu on Saturday won the state’s edition of the 2025 President Federation Cup competition after defeating Ijele FC 3-0.

In the final match played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, striker Daniel Onyia scored in the 27th minute to give the Flying Antelopes the lead.

Brilliant display by Ijele FC thereafter in the efforts to equalise failed to yield any fruit as the Rangers defence line stood firm.

In the second half, both teams piled pressure on each other and in the 75th minute veteran striker Michael Uchebo made it 2-0 for Rangers.

The match was put to bed when Onyia blasted in a shot from outside the penalty area to seal another Cup victory for Rangers.

Speaking with newsmen after presenting the trophy to the Rangers team, the Enugu Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Lloyd Ekweremadu, expressed joy over the successful completion of the competition.

“I am highly excited and I appreciate everyone who contributed to the success of this competition.

“I commend the state Football Association (FA), the media, the teams and their management,” he said.

Speaking also, the state FA chairman, Tony Ugwu, said the association would do everything possible to ensure the success of both teams in the national 2025 President Federation Cup competition.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both Rangers and Ijele FC have now qualified to represent Enugu State in this year’s edition of the national competition. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) says Nigeria will likely witness its first astronomical lunar crescent on Feb. 28.

Dr Felix Ale, Director of Media and Corporate Communications of NASRDA, said this on Saturday.

He said that the lunar crescent had been calculated to occur at 1:45am West African Time (WAT).

Ale said the predicted time of 1:45am time, also known as the Crescent Zero Hour, would be when the crescent could be seen under perfect atmospheric conditions with the aid of optical instruments like binoculars or telescopes.

“The crescent will become visible to the naked eye in the evening of Friday 28th 2025 between 6:17pm and 7:35pm across different locations in Nigeria.

“Maiduguri will be the first city to witness the young lunar crescent from 6:17pm to 6:48pm, followed by Yola, Adamawa State, from 6:21pm to 6:51pm.

“Damaturu, Yobe, will follow from 6:22pm to 6:53pm, Kano, Katsina, Jos and Kaduna will experience the first lunar crescent between 6:38pm and 7:12pm.

“The sunset and moon set will occur between 6:35pm and 7:12pm, 6:38pm and 7:15pm, 6:35pm and 7:11pm, 6:40pm and 7:17pm respectively.

“Enugu will experience the lunar crescent between 6:42pm and 7:32pm with sunset and moonset at about 6:42pm and 7:18pm,’’ he said.

He  predicted that in the FCT, the first lunar crescent would appear between 6:44pm and 7:15 pm, with sunset and moonset at about 6:44pm and 7:20pm.

The last cities to experience the lunar crescent, he said would be Lagos and Abeokuta between the hours of 6:59pm and 7:30pm.

Ale said that other cities across the federation will experience the lunar crescent at different times within the estimated visibility window of 6:17pm and 7:35pm on same day.

He said “for a clear sighting of the first lunar crescent, observers are to use optical aids where necessary, observe under clear atmospheric conditions.

“Observers are to position themselves in locations with an unobstructed view of the western horizon after sunset.’’

He added that the scientific report provided precise predictions on the lunar crescent across locations of the country.

According to him, the report ensured accuracy for those who relied on lunar observations for religious, cultural and scientific purposes.

The space agency encouraged researchers, scholars and religious groups to utilise the findings, adding that anyone requiring additional data for further analyses could visit the official office website on www.nasrda.gov.ng.

Dr Bonaventure Okere, Director, Centre for Basic Space Science and Astronomy (CBSSA), an activity centre of NASRDA, said it was regarded as the first stage of the moon, hence the new crescent.

Okere said the appearance of the new crescent was highly significant in the Islamic religion, because it was used to determine some rites and practices like the beginning of the Ramadan Fast.

“The Islamic religion use moon phases for their Islamic rites but astronomers study the cycle of the rising and setting of the moon to determine moon days which is usually 28 days.

“Astronomers use the moon cycle to generate Lunar calendar, understand the part of the moon you can see daily,’’ he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

FG to cancel Visa-on-Arrival policy, introduce landing, exit cards

FG to cancel Visa-on-Arrival policy, introduce landing, exit cards

By Ibironke Ariyo

The Federal Government has announced plans to cancel its Visa-on-Arrival policy and introduce landing and exit cards, which prospective visitors will pre-fill before coming into the country.

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this in Abuja during the closing ceremony of a weeklong capacity building training organised for personnel of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

The training was on Advanced Passenger Information/Passenger Name Record API/PNR Data in National Security and Law Enforcement.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the FG had in 2020 unveiled the Visa-on-Arrival policy, a class of short-stay visa issued at the point of entry.

However, Tunji-Ojo had on assumption of office in 2023 said that the Visa-on-Arrival Policy would, henceforth, be based on reciprocity.

This visa is often given to frequently travelled high net worth investors and intending visitors who may not be able to obtain visas in their countries of residence due to the absence of Nigerian missions or embassies in those countries.

The Minister of Interior, however, said that the API/PNR was not optional, recalling that the system was not in place when he was made minister.

According to him, what the API, PNR gives is objectivity in decision making, objective profiling, not subjective profiling.

He added that what existed previously was subjective.

“Today, we have heard and we have sorted the API across all of our five international airports.

“We think that what we need to do is for us to be able to expand the capability of this in an adaptive manner to allow other border posts.

“The visa system that is one of the core, because I always tell people the visa is not just an approval of entry, it is a migration management device.

“It is a security device to manage migration into your country. So, the way it is at the moment is very subjective.

“We are not really too objective and that is why we are automating the whole process end-to-end.

“And the e-visa solution, we are working hard to be able to meet the March 1st or peradventure if we are unable, April 1st, we will hit it live,” he said.

Tunji-Ojo said that the system would be automated, adding that people would apply online and the service would do what it needed to do.

He said: “That solution will be integrated with the Interpol System, the criminal records system, so that we can be able to take decisions.

“We do not want foreign attachés approving and issuing visas. It is not going to be that way anymore, we want to be able to screen people more.

“Nigeria cannot be a destination for wanted criminals in the world. Nigeria is not a safe haven for any criminal and it will never be.

“Another thing we are trying to do even for our expatriates is to see how we can integrate all these our immigration solutions.

“What we are doing is to harmonise all these solutions in our data centre, harmonise the database and be able to let the solutions speak to one another rather than having solutions in silos.

“We want to have integrated solutions. So, what we are looking at is for any decision that borders on immigration into Nigeria.

“It will be impossible for approvals to be given without the clearance of Interpol, criminal records system and all background checking agencies in real time.

“Security is not a sector where you can afford to be 99.9 per cent correct. You just have to be 100 per cent. We believe that it is better for us to take decisions based on objectivity rather than subjectivity.

“And of course, that will lead to the cancellation of the visa-on-arrival process because the visa-on-arrival we understand is not a system that works, because I don’t expect you to just come into my country without me knowing that you are coming into my country.

“No, it is never done anywhere and of course, we are also introducing what we call the landing and exit card.

“We do it now, but it is manual. We are not going to be doing that anymore. This is 2025. This is not 1825. So, technology must take its place,” he said.

Speaking further, Tunji-Ojo said that people must fill the landing card which would be integrated with the visa solution, the passport solution, and to all background checking systems across the world before a visitor comes.

According to him, the ministry will be able to share this data with other agencies and across the world, to sanitise the process.

He said, “A scenario where it is difficult for NIS, on the tip of a finger, to tell me the number of foreigners who are entering into Nigeria is unacceptable.

“A scenario where somebody comes into Nigeria, disappears and becomes untraceable is unacceptable. A scenario where there is abuse of immigration policies and processes is unacceptable.

“A scenario where somebody needs to come to Nigeria, stay for six months, waiting to regularise their residency in Nigeria is unacceptable. It is not done anywhere in the world.

“So, we are going to bring these massive reforms and these reforms start between March 1 and April 1.

“Why we are trying to do these is to be able to safeguard our people, it’s for us to be responsible in the comity of nations, and for us to be able to contribute our fair quota to international peace,” he maintained.

Earlier, the NIS Comptroller-General, Mrs Kemi Nandap, said that the programme originated from discussions held with the United Nations Organisation on Counter Terrorism in Bangkok, Thailand in 2024.

“We recognise the need to fully maximise the administration’s investments in this project, and so we must engage in a lot of capacity building.

“We have successfully trained over 100 officers drawn from critical areas,” she said.

Nandap said the service had a crop of well-trained and patriotic personnel who were ready to give their best to the country. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) says the latest C4i intelligence tools into its surveillance operations will further enhance maritime security and regulatory compliance within the sector.

The NIMASA’s Head, Public Relations, Mr Osagie Edward, made this known in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the C4i Centre, which stands for Command, Control, Communication, Computer and Intelligence, is a critical component of the Deep Blue Project.

Edward explained that the C4i intelligence system played a key role in intelligence gathering and data collection, contributing significantly to securing Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The official noted that as a result of these efforts, the country had maintained zero piracy incidents for over 24 months.

He said: “The Surveillance Unit of the Shipping Development Department at NIMASA has been granted single-user access to the Windward tool of the C4i intelligence system.

“This is in a strategic move to bolster surveillance and enhance revenue generation.

“This development extends the application of the C4i facility previously focused on safety and security into shipping development and revenue optimisation.

“This is by leveraging advanced technology, NIMASA aims to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve maritime surveillance, and block revenue leakages, ensuring a more efficient and transparent system.”

Edward said that the Management of NIMASA, under the leadership of Dr Dayo Mobereola, had reiterated its commitment to improving internal processes to achieve optimal performance across all operational areas. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Government has expressed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening maritime collaboration with The Gambia to enhance regional security and economic growth.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, made this declaration at the Fourth Blue Economy Conference in Banjul.

Oyetola, represented by the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Dayo Mobereola, emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to expanding its maritime security infrastructure beyond its territorial waters.

The minister revealed that discussions were ongoing regarding the potential extension of the Deep Blue Project’s operations to cover a wider area within the Gulf of Guinea.

“Nigeria remains committed to being a stabilising force, fostering cooperation, and promoting sustainable development through the blue economy.

“We are dedicated to ensuring safety and security in the Gulf of Guinea region. Given the recent disruption in global trade caused by the crisis in the Suez Canal, there has been a surge in shipping traffic around Africa.

“To address this, Nigeria is working towards extending the operational coverage of its Deep Blue assets to further enhance maritime security,” he said.

In addition to advancing regional cooperation, Oyetola urged the delegates at the conference to support Nigeria’s bid for re-election to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council (Category ‘C’) for the 2026-2027 biennium.

“Let me take this opportunity to inform this esteemed gathering that Nigeria has formally declared its candidacy for the IMO Council election under Category ‘C’ for the 2026-2027 term.

“We seek the kind support and vote of member states of the Maritime Organisation of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) in the forthcoming election at the 34th IMO Assembly Session.

“Nigeria’s representation in the IMO Council will strengthen Africa’s voice in global maritime decision-making.

“This is particularly in areas related to the blue economy, maritime safety and security, and environmental sustainability, given the volume of trade conducted in our region,” he said.

The minister also highlighted that Nigeria’s efforts in maritime security had received global recognition.

Oyetola said both the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) and the IMO had commended the country for its effective deployment of the Deep Blue Project, which had sustained zero piracy incidents in Nigerian waters for the past three years.

He said that Nigeria remained committed to fostering strategic partnerships and advancing the shared economic interests of West and Central African nations through sustainable blue economy initiatives. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Minister advocates legislation to ensure hygienic abattoir practices

Minister advocates legislation to ensure hygienic abattoir practices

The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, has called for legislation to ensure that all animals slaughtered in abattoirs are processed under controlled and hygienic conditions to guarantee public health.

Maiha made the call on Friday in Abuja at the 2025 Ministerial News Conference.

He emphasised that such measures would ensure the healthiness of slaughtered animals for consumption and enable the country to fully harness the potential inherent in the livestock sector.

He highlighted the underutilisation of resources in abattoirs, such as cow blood, horns, skin, bones, bone marrow, and bile, which were currently wasted.

Maiha noted that if these resources were fully utilised, the hide and skin alone could create 700,000 jobs and generate about 23 billion dollars in value for the country.

He further explained that economically, if 200 cows were slaughtered in an abattoir, the blood could be channelled to blood banks, with each cow having 30 litres of blood valued at 1,000 Naira per litre.

Maiha said each cow produced 30 kilograms of solid waste after slaughter, which could be used to make biogas to power the abattoir.

He said the bones could be crushed into calcium for animal feed, and the bone marrow could be sent to pharmaceutical companies for drug production.

Maiha attributed the current hike in beef prices to over-dependence on red meat, which constituted 55 per cent of cow meat, while other parts were considered waste.

He assured that the ministry would ensure best practices in abattoirs to create jobs for the masses and enhance the country’s economy.

Maiha emphasised the ministry’s vision to build a resilient, sustainable, inclusive, and globally competitive livestock sector that drives economic diversification, growth, job opportunities, food and nutrition security, and improved livelihoods.

He added that the mission was to create innovative, inclusive, and sustainable public service programmes to address the agricultural sector and ensure that the volume and value of businesses there were unlocked.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of the government’s progress and developmental agenda.

It was also in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu to all ministers to provide updates on the achievements, policies, and programmes of their respective ministries.

This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and effective communication with the Nigerian public. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Vocational Education: FG trains 270 technical teachers, instructors in digital literacy

Vocational Education: FG trains 270 technical teachers, instructors in digital literacy

By Ibukun Emiola

The Federal Ministry of Education has trained 270 technical teachers and instructors in Digital Literacy Pedagogy and Trade Specific in Nigeria.

At the closing of the 21-day training in Ibadan on Friday, the Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, said the training considered the demand for skilled workforce in the 21st century.

Alausa further stated that the training was to strengthen technical and vocational education in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister was represented by Dr Muyibat Olodo, Director, Technology and Science Education.

According to Alausa, as technological advancements reshape industries and create new opportunities, the need for skilled professionals who can adapt and innovate becomes paramount.

“Technical and vocational education plays a pivotal role in this context as it equips individuals with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their respective fields.

“More importantly, it bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications, ensuring that our students are not just educated but are also employable and industry-ready.

“This training programme is not merely about acquiring new teaching methodologies, but rekindling the passion for skill development, embracing innovation, and preparing our students to be globally competitive,” said the minister.

He stated that well-trained teachers or instructors do not just teach; they also inspire.

The minister further said the impact of skilled educators could be seen in the numerous success stories of students who had become entrepreneurs, innovators, and problem-solvers.

“This is because they had teachers who believed in their potential.

“You are the cornerstone of our educational system, and your role is indispensable in shaping the future of our students and, consequently, our nation,” Alausa said.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Salihu Adelabu, commended the Federal Government for training the technical teachers as required in the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) curriculum.

According to him, training was the missing piece in the past as there was usually infrastructure and personnel provided for the implementation of TVET.

“And that is what we are saying: our teachers are capable and competent, but the moment the capacity building is lacking, you can’t give what you don’t have,” Adelabu said.

The commissioner charged participants to apply the knowledge gained, adding that Oyo State has taken the lead by revamping and remodelling all its technical colleges.

The acting Rector, The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Dr Taiwo Lasisi, said the confidence to handle contemporary challenges in the modern workplace was germane.

NAN reports that the rector was represented by Dr Kehinde Faniyin, the Dean of the institution’s Faculty of Business and Communications Studies.

Charging the participants to keep up with the group they formed during their training session, Lasisi said teamwork would aid effective solutions to contemporary challenges.

Earlier, Mrs Blessing Ogwu, National Coordinator, Innovation Development and Effectiveness in Acquisition of Skill (IDEAS) project, said the training addressed and harnessed the skills gap at the post-basic and informal sectors.

“There is growing evidence that training of technical teachers and instructors can improve effectiveness in developing countries in a cost-effective manner and without compromising equity,” Ogwu said.

Also, the Chairman of the IDEAS project, Dr Tony Okwa, enjoined participants to apply the knowledge gained to enrich their lives and build their students to be self-reliant.

NAN reports that outstanding participants were given laptops and books, while certificates were given to each participant. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy (FMACTCE) Hannatu Musawa, says plans are underway to establish a Diaspora City in Nigeria to boost inbound tourism.

The minister stated this when she inaugurated a committee to drive the Motherland 2025 Initiative on Friday in Abuja.

Musawa said the Motherland 2025 Initiative was aimed at positioning Nigeria as a premier global destination, where tourism would drive economic empowerment, cultural preservation and national pride.

The committee members were drawn from the FMACTCE, Motherland Africa team and the National Tourism Development Authority (NTDA).

The members were also drawn from the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), and Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN).

She said the committee’s primary objective is to ensure the successful implementation of the Motherland 2025 Initiative, maintain timely delivery, effective oversight and monitoring of project implementation.

According to Musawa, the Diaspora City is a flagship component of the Motherland project that is a thriving tourism hub.

“This is where members of the diaspora can seamlessly invest and ensure a sustainable connection with their homeland and roots,’’ she said.

Musawa added that a citizenship programme would be supported by legal frameworks to enable diaspora and foreign nationals to obtain citizenships to safeguard their investments in Nigeria.

“Motherland 2025 is more than just a moment in time; it is a catalyst for sustained engagement, forging lasting connections between the diaspora and their homeland.

“Investors, opportunities, global travellers and Nigeria’s dynamic experiences.

“As part of the long-term components of the project, we are developing Diaspora City, a thriving tourism hub where members of the diaspora can seamlessly invest, reconnect, and put down roots.

“I charge the committee members to be diligent and work toward deliverables and timelines set to achieve successful outcomes from this initiative,” she said.

The minister said that the Motherland 2025 Initiative was a collaborative effort of the FMACTCE and Motherland Africa.

The minister added that the collaboration would include other key stakeholders, such as federal ministries, government agencies, and private sector organisations.

According to Musawa, the Motherland 2025 Initiative is part of the ministry’s broader strategy, “Destination 2030: Nigeria Everywhere.”

“This is an initiative designed to amplify the creative industries, strengthen international partnerships and elevate Nigeria’s global cultural footprint.”

She said key projects under the initiative included the Motherland 2025 Festival, which would expose the global diaspora to peak experiences of Nigerian arts, culture and creative landscape from the 36 states and the FCT.

She said the festival, scheduled to hold from Dec. 15 to Dec. 21 in Lagos and Abuja, would reconnect investments and celebrate Nigeria’s shared heritage.

“Nigeria is the largest black nation in the world, as one in every four persons of African origin is Nigerian. Our cultural and historical significance is undeniable.

“Whether through ancestry, culture or spirit, we welcome all who seek to rediscover their roots and contribute to the next chapter of our nation’s story.

“Through the Motherland Festival and its citizenship programme, we will empower individuals to trace their ancestry, fostering deeper bonds with Nigeria’s rich heritage,’’ she said.

Musawa used the opportunity to urge Nigerians abroad to come home and take part in the celebration, billed for December.

“This December, be part of something historic and experience our warmth, our culture and the limitless opportunities.

“Together, let us build a future that honours our heritage while driving economic and social progress forward, that is why we say, home is coming,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
