NGF boss introduces 1st online-based golf training

The President, Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), Olusegun Runsewe has introduced a new dimension in golf development with the unveiling of an online-based golf training programme in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the online-based golf training programme is the first of its kind in Africa.

An elated Runsewe told NAN that he was happy that the concept which was once a dream had become a reality.

He noted that he had also organised other digital golf training for Nigerian golf professionals at the Golf and Health Signature, Abuja to ensure that Nigerian golf hit the world stage in no distant time.

He said that a total of five pros; Elisha Markus, Aminu Baba, Musa Ayuba, Sharon Wesley and Daniel Pam have been chosen to pilot the training programme, adding that they would be exposed to international best practices.

“This is a dream come true. Some few years ago, I realised that golfing here in the country was too local and there was a need to expose our people.

“In the process, I travelled to South Africa and met some pros. During our conversation, I realised that our pros here in the country are a bit far off with regards to IT based training of golf.

“Instantly, that year, I went to the Botswana Embassy and got visas for two Nigerian pros to travel to Botswana for some relevant golf training course. They went, came back and were very helpful to us.

“Afterwards, I realised that there was still a need to expose our pros more to the game. However, it was a bit difficult due to the high cost of having to bring some pros from abroad or taking our pros out of the country.

“I had to call on the resident pro in Botswana, Kelosiwaag Mpoh who agreed to come over to the country at a reduced cost. He came and gave about 15 Nigerian pros some exposure on the modern training techniques,” he said.

The NGF boss however, noted that he recently discovered that a golfer must not have to go on the course every time to take lessons.

He said he found out that sometimes, one can choose to do it online, especially in this modern world of internet technology and communication.

He explained that was what birthed the idea behind the training.

“I felt that this innovation should start from Nigeria and as of today, we have succeeded to bring in one of the biggest production companies in this regard.

“They will take five of our pros in four strategic basic areas of training in golf, i.e. hitting long drive, bunker shot, chips and putting.

“We have two pros on long drive training, and one each on bunker shot, chipping and putting.

“Bunker shot training became very necessary because most Nigerian golfers see the bunker as a very difficult part of the game, whereas if one practices it, you will find out that it is as easy as every other shot in the game.

“These five pros will kick start our pilot online training programme on golf. This is the very first time we are going into this and we are very proud and happy that we are starting from somewhere,” he said.

Runsewe said that a lot of people were already excited about the training and have started asking for the videos, even with the short notice.

He said he was very proud about the new concept, adding that the beauty of the training was its unique similarity with what obtains around the world, noting adding that most pros abroad run similar online trainings.

“One basic advantage of this is that, when the video goes viral, people can even call a specific pro to take them on specific trainings based on personal terms and agreement.

“So, it’s like opening a new window for online lessons and golf development in Nigeria.

“This can also go a long way, in terms of grassroots development of the game as a lot of our schools can take advantage of the opportunity by playing these videos to help teach the young ones,” he said.

He stressed that the reason why Nigeria does not do well in golf is because of late start, adding that it was extremely important to start early in line with international best practices.

Runsewe said the training would also go a long way in helping some business executives that rarely have time to go to the range to train with their pros.

“With this new innovation, they can take a 30 minutes break and go online to watch these training videos and practice while in the office.

“So, these are some of the reasons why we have to embark on these online training programme, to give Nigerians good lessons in golf and to also expose them to the best international practice.

“This is indeed a starting point and a lot of more videos on golf training will be coming up shortly. We have a lot of pros in Nigeria and they are very good, but lack exposure.

“So, with this, we will also have more of the pros coming online to gain more exposure,” he added. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Stakeholders seek youth empowerment for sustainable peace in Nigeria

Stakeholders seek youth empowerment for sustainable peace in Nigeria

Leadership experts and stakeholders from different backgrounds have called on government at all levels to prioritise empowerment of Nigerian youth to build lasting peace and security across the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the stakeholders made the call at the 14th edition of the annual Peace Achievers International Conference and Awards on Saturday in Abuja.

The conference is with the theme,” Building Bridges for Sustainable Peace and Security: Integrating Sectors for Harmonious Future.”

It brought together heads of organisations, seasoned entrepreneurs, members of the diplomatic community, traditional rulers and the academia from across Nigeria and beyond.

According to the stakeholders, for Nigeria to effectively curb the challenges of insecurity and its perennial sectional conflicts, there is need to productively engage its teeming youths.

Amb. Kingsley Amafibe, Project Coordinator of Peace Ambassador Agency, organisers of the conference, said there was urgent need to create economic opportunities for Nigerians youth to get them occupied.

“In fact, we are sitting on a time bomb and our leaders should take this very seriously, as our major problem is youth unemployment.

“Young people are out there graduating from school every day without job, and even those who want to create the jobs as private individuals do not have access to finance.

“I think every of our leader know what to do, because they all have a blueprint before they come into power, but very often when they get into power they forget these things.

“They travel abroad and see how these things are done, but they come back to Nigeria and still subject people to poverty.

“For the past 14 years, we have been able to impact and reach out to communities with our peace campaign and have over 1,000 children under our scholarship,” he said.

Amafibe urge Nigerian youths to take responsibility for themselves to build that future of their dreams through hard work and discipline.

According to him, the failure of successive governments to build a better society should not be an excuse for youths to remain unproductive.

“I take myself as an example and I like to share my story because I came to Abuja without nothing, but today I have been able to put things together.

“The problem with many young people is that they tend to divert their attention to any trending opportunity without focusing their energy in one craft and say,” he said.

The project coordinator added that Nigerians as well as Africans of goodwill, who have used their resources to positively affect society would be honoured at the award ceremony.

Mr Felix Achibiri, who made a presentation on Peace Building and through Sectoral Partnership, said youth economic empowerment was a catalyst for sustainable peace.

He, however, noted that government alone cannot create jobs, adding that there was need for private organisations to take youth empowerment as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility

“There is a clear nexus between job security and building a harmonious and peaceful environment or society, and there is also a need for the corporate sector to invest in community social responsibility.

However, the government on this part has a greater role to play by making sure that an enabling environment is created for the private sector to thrive.

“There is urgent need to embrace technology to unlock value because today, African digital economy is projected to hit about 185 billion dollars , so what are we doing as a nation to take advantage of this?

“There is need to develop the ICT sector and set up incubation and acceleration centers in our primary schools and secondary schools, to unlock value and prepare our youth for the great ahead,” he said.

Mr Michael Bartlett-Vanderpuye, President and Group Chairman M&C Group Global, said there was need for African youths to challenge themselves and take their future in their hands.

“We have a dependent culture and it is across Africa where somebody is a university graduate but he is waiting for his father’s uncle’s friend who is in government to connect him to work.

“In Europe and in the U.S., most of the time, by 16 years they are already selling, working at Walmart, and they are teaching them to be independent, not to be dependent.

“In Africa, some of 40-year old men are still living in their father’s houses, and the father inherited it from the grandfather.

“So we have to cut that dependent culture to create avenues for wealth creation,” he said.

Dr Victor Enebeli, Director of Studies, Justice Mary Odili Judicial Institute, said Nigeria’s leadership challenges were local and therefore need workable solutions that are unique to them.

“What Nigeria needs is a peace summit that involves the grassroots by involving the 774 local governments.

“They will tell us what their problems are and what the solutions are , and at this point, we are not importing solutions anymore as we have the solutions here in Nigeria with us,” he said.(NAN)(www nannews.ng)

NMCO decries lack of capacity among mining title holders

NMCO decries lack of capacity among mining title holders

The Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office (NMCO) has expressed concerns that some mining title holders, who possess multiple cadastral units, lack the capacity to operate them.

This was disclosed by the Director General of NMCO, Dr Obadiah Nkom, at a presentation at the ninth Nigeria Mining Week in Abuja.

According to Nkom, the lack of capacity among some mining title holders was affecting the entry of genuine investors into the sector.

He noted that some small-scale operators have acquired titles that were beyond their capacity to operate.

He said to address this issue; the NMCO introduced a new mining regime in July, aimed at sanitising the sector and ensuring that mining titles are allocated to capable operators.

Nkom said the regime operated on the principle of “first come, first served” and “use it or lose it.”

Nkom stated that the new regime was yielding positive results, with an increase in the number of investors in the sector and the revocation of licenses that were not being used.

He emphasised that the NMCO plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency, efficiency, and compliance in the administration of mineral rights.

“The NMCO is tasked with managing Nigeria’s mineral resources responsibly, attracting investments, and fostering economic growth while protecting the environment.

“By aligning its operations with international standards and national priorities, the NMCO is positioning Nigeria’s mining sector as a cornerstone of the nation’s economic diversification agenda.”

Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, and other stakeholders have underscored the importance of advancing bilateral trade relations between Nigeria and UK.

They made the call at the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) 2024 Presidential Dinner and Award Ceremony on Wednesday night in Lagos.

Oduwole said the Federal Government was committed through reforms, trade facilitation, investment promotion and industrial policy to drive economic diversification and inclusive growth.

She said that the government aligned with the NBCC initiative to ensure that Nigerian businesses were well positioned to compete globally while benefitting from Britain’s trade investment and expertise.

The minister noted that trade relationship between both countries was valued at 7.5 billion pounds with Nigeria exporting approximately 2.5 billion annually.

She, however, stated that there was room to achieve more by targeting a modest one to five per cent increase in export to the United Kingdom over the next two years.

Oduwole said the target could generate an additional 25 million dollars to 125 million dollars in export revenue, strengthening sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and oil.

She added that the development would enhance Nigeria’s foreign reserves and reinforce global competitiveness.

“I challenge the NBCC to lead the charge to expand market access, foster partnerships and support productivity improvements to make this goal a reality.

“Together we can move the needle on the trade volumes and productivity, ensuring that the relationship truly delivers prosperity for both nations,” she said.

Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos, noted that the event’s theme, “Nigeria-British Relations: From Partnership to Prosperity”, was a reminder of the rich history of both countries, the milestones achieved and opportunities ahead.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, Commissioner, Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, lauded NBCC for the remarkable work to strengthen bond between Nigeria and UK.

The governor said Lagos State would continue to lead the charge to expand trade alongside the chamber’s giant strides in promoting trade between both countries.

He added that the government understands the importance of partnerships and connections in state’s journey towards becoming a globally competitive economy.

He noted that his government remained committed to creating an enabling environment that encourages international investments, supports business growth and nurtures innovation.

“I am filled with optimism that the partnership between both countries that has stood the test of time would continue to evolve and grow stronger.

“It is up to us leaders in government, business and civil society to nurture these partnership to innovate and find new ways to collaborate for the benefit of our people.

“I want to reaffirm the commitment of Lagos to supporting initiatives that improves our economy and improves the lives of our people as together we can achieve so much more to build resilient economies that uplift our people,” he said.

Mr Jonny Baxter, British Deputy High Commissioner, said that there was room for expansion in trade relationships between both countries.

Baxter also explained there were plenty of instruments in place to make it work via enhanced trade investment partnership and institutions that had helped develop the relationship over the years.

Sen. Akin Odunsi, a former senator, said the evolution of both nation’s bilateral ties had grown from historical connections to dynamic partnership fostering innovation, economic growth, and cultural exchange.

He maintained that the NBCC had been at the forefront of nurturing the partnership between both countries by creating platforms for dialogue, fostering trust, and driving opportunities for businesses and individuals.

Odunsi, however, stressed that the prosperity of both nations was not automatic but required deliberate action by investing in sectors that drive growth, empowering the next generation of leaders, and embracing innovation.

“Let us also renew our commitment to building bridges of prosperity and fostering a partnership that endures for generations.

“Together, we can ensure that the relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom continues to thrive, transforming challenges into opportunities and aspirations into achievements,” he said.

Mr Ray Atelly, President, NBCC, said that 2024 had been extraordinary for Nigerian- British relations.

Atelly said in the face of global challenges, both countries had demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and innovation to fuel economies and created opportunities.

He noted that trade between Nigeria and the UK had reached new heights, signalling confidence in our capacity to meet the ever-evolving demands of a dynamic global landscape.

The NBCC president said that the chamber had been steadfast in its commitment to supporting businesses on both sides.

Atelly said that the NBCC had provided the critical platforms and partnerships necessary to navigate complexities and seize emerging opportunities.

“Tonight, we celebrate the achievements of individuals, private-sector giants, and corporations who have not only excelled in their respective fields but have also actively promoted Nigerian-British trade relations.

“By building bridges between our two nations, they have not only enhanced business ties but also fostered mutual understanding and goodwill.

“The future of Nigerian-British trade holds great promise.

“With the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) gathering momentum, there are vast opportunities for UK businesses to partner with Nigerian companies and access broader African markets,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

FG addressing environmental degradation caused by mining – minister

FG addressing environmental degradation caused by mining – minister

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, has said that the ministry is addressing the fears of states about environmental degradation by ensuring that mining companies comply with stipulated standards.

Alake stated this at the closing of the ninth Nigeria Mining Week on Wednesday in Abuja.

The minister stated that there were departments responsible for overseeing the operations of the operators.

He said that the departments have the veto to make sure that the operators comply with environmental standards and regulations.

Alake added that the move was aimed at addressing reports of subnational interference involving overregulation of the sector and multiple taxes imposed by state governments, among other issues.

“This issue came up at the chief executives roundtable on Tuesday. We have been engaging the sub-national authorities, which are not necessarily states alone but local governments as well.

“Some local governments also claim ownership of the land and then get into dispute with operators, so I have been engaging with these governments,” he explained.

He said that, in addition to the move, he encouraged state governments to apply for mining licenses to give them a sense of belonging and participation.

According to the minister, findings reveal that sub-nationals have grievances about possessing mineral resources in their areas but they do not have access to them.

He said that the move was easing tensions in states, with infractions by mining companies being reported to the ministry for appropriate action.

The minister urged mining stakeholders to think outside the box and introduce innovations and initiatives to address their challenges, stating that concerted efforts were required to develop the sector.

Alake further said that during engagements with chief executive officers of mining companies, a suggestion was made for the government to establish a solid minerals bank.

“I told them why don`t you think outside the box, why don`t you bend a little bit from a conventional perspective, and why can`t the operators come together and establish their own bank that will service themselves?

“If you wait for government to establish the bank, automatically government will control it, and it will now be subject to political influence, and the structure may not endure beyond the government that established it,“ he said.

He expressed confidence that Mining Week stimulated intellectual engagements, the exchange of ideas, and provided a platform to explore opportunities aimed at developing the sector.

Mr Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counselor, Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has called on Nigeria to prioritise investment in safety, infrastructure and tourism promotion, in order to drive economic growth and development.

Yang made the call on Tuesday in Abuja during a seminar on Nigeria-China Tourism, Hospitality, and Culture 2024 themed: “Promoting Nigeria-China Tourism, Hospitality, Cultural Potentials and Services for Sustainable Development”.

Yang, who is also the Director of the China Cultural Centre, emphasised that Nigeria’s tourism sector had the potential of enhancing GDP and fostering sustainable development.

According to him, tourism not only contributes to economic growth but also fosters cultural exchange and strengthens international friendships.

“Nigeria, as the most populous country in Africa, boasts a rich history, stunning natural landscapes, and unique cultural assets, such as music, dance, art, and clothing.

“Tourism has immense potential to drive development,” Yang said.

“I hope more Chinese tourists will visit Nigeria to experience its vibrant culture, art, and natural beauty,” he said.

Yang also underscored China’s accomplishments in the tourism sector.

He said China recorded 4.89 million domestic tourists, 87.63 million outbound tourists, and 82.03 million inbound tourists in 2023, with further growth seen in 2024.

Yang also presented a global perspective referencing the World Travel and Tourism Council’s 2022 report.

It predicts an average annual growth rate of 5.8 per cent for the global tourism industry over the next decade, outpacing the global economic growth rate of 2.7 per cent.

On his part, Mr Cui Guang-Zhen, Director General of the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria, echoed the call for more investments in tourism.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s cultural diversity, saying: “with over 100 languages, Nigeria is rich in cultural and tourism resources.

“Nigerian music, featuring global stars like Burna Boy and Wizkid, is already a worldwide sensation.

“However, more investment is needed to harness its tourism potential,” he said.

Cui, who has lived in Nigeria for a decade and visited popular destinations like Calabar, emphasised the need for infrastructural development and targeted initiatives to attract international visitors.

Mr Raphael Obi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, noted the transformative power of the tourism and hospitality sectors.

Obi, represented by Blessing Ogar, said: “these industries are pivotal drivers of economic growth, reducing unemployment and empowering underserved communities, particularly youth and women.”

Obi praised China’s integration of tourism and cultural heritage into its economic framework, citing it as a model for Nigeria.

“This seminar provides a timely platform to exchange ideas and foster partnerships that will benefit both nations,” he added.(NAN)(www.nannews.com.ng)

Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Minister of Women Affairs, has urged women and youths to redefine Nigeria’s trajectory through innovation and creativity that would drive transformative change toward a better society.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim, represented by Dr Atinuke Folashade-Oloni, Principal Social Welfare Officer in the ministry, made the call at the Future Planters Young Women Leadership & Entrepreneurship conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

The conference that had “Nigerian Young Women Taking Ownership of a Sustainable Future” as its theme, was organised by Community Initiative for Character Moulding and Entrepreneurship Development (CiCMED).

While noting the potentials of women and youths, she said that Nigeria’s future depended on their collective efforts to drive transformative change.

“Your generation has the power to redefine Nigeria’s trajectory. Seize this moment, own your future, and shape a sustainable world,” she said.

The minister, while reiterating government support to women and youths, added that a lot could be achieved through empowerment and sustainable programmes and activities.

Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), in a remark, stressed the need for women to be innovative and contribute towards Nigeria’s transformation and sustainable development.

Kuku, represented by Hajiya Amira Mamman, a Principal Legal Officer in FAAN, added that the agency would continue to support women to thrive and harness their potentials.

Mr Kefas Elisha-Tigga, CiCMED boss, in his remark, said the conference was an opportunity to explore innovative solutions towards a sustainable future that was inclusive, innovative and transformative.

“Let us brainstorm, innovate and inspire one another so that, together, we can establish a new society grounded in strong value, equity and sustainable development.

“Let us take ownership of our future and actively collaborate to build a world where every young woman can thrive and contribute meaningfully in the society,” he said.

Dr Amina Omeri, Chief Executive Officer of Timbuktu Service Ltd, in a remark, noted the effect of patriarchy which, she said, had hindered women’s development, hence the need to address it to ensure gender parity.

Dr Hajara Mohammed, Lecturer, Entrepreneurship Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi called for improved access to finance, government support and social network to improve women’s contribution to development.

Other activities included panel discussions, unveiling and launching of the African Sapphire Magazine, and product exhibitions. (NAN) www.nannews.ng.com
