The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Embassy in Nigeria on Friday donated 50 tonnes of dates to the Federal Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the donation was presented by the Saudi Amb. to Nigeria, Mr Faisal Alghamdi.

Dates are basically tropical fruits that are grown on date palm trees.

It is scientifically known as phoenix dactylifera and is one of the healthiest fruits in the world.

It was received by Amb. Murtala Jimoh, the Deputy Director, Middle East and Gulf Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on behalf of the Nigerian Government.

Alghamdi said that the humanitarian donation reflected the brotherly bond between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia that had lasted for decades.

According to him, the Saudi government through the King Salman’s Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSRelief), has been providing necessary humanitarian assistance to Nigeria at different sectors of the economy.

The ambassador said that it was part of the country’s continued commitment aimed at alleviating the sufferings of people in distress.

“To fulfill its humanitarian pioneering role all over the world, my country has handed over more than 50 tonnes of dates to the friendly and brotherly Nigerian Government, in addition to the 50 tonnes of dates distributed in Kano on Wednesday.

“The relief centre has been providing necessary humanitarian assistance to Nigeria at various fields, the most recent is the execution of Et’am three Initiative done in March through the distribution of food baskets to 5,606 beneficiaries.

“In Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Borno and Abuja, at the cost of 40, 000 dollars.

“Furthermore, Suadi government through the KSRelief carried out a medical diagnostic campaign in Abuja, Kano and Lagos in the last quarter of 2023, in which different medical procedures were offered free of charge to Nigerians.

“Today’s handover of dates is part of the annual humanitarian and relief assistance presented by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosque to a number of friendly countries, among which is Nigeria,’’ he said.

Responding, Amb. Jimoh, lauded the initiative of the Saudi government, saying that the 50 tonnes of dates would be distributed accordingly.

According to him, the donation of 50 tonnes of dates from the Saudi Government through the KSRelief means a lot to us, and the dates is meant for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Victims of Natural Disasters across the country, particularly in the IDPs camps.

“So, we took a little of the 50 tonnes of dates last week at the MFA and we are here for the symbolic handing over,

“Also this afternoon, Amb. Adamu Ibrahim, the Permanent Secretary MFA, will formally hand over these dates to the Permanent Secretary of the Humanitarian Ministry for onward transmission to affected people across the country.

“So it goes a long way to demonstrate the cordial relationship between Nigeria and the Kingdom, and this is not the first time this gesture is being extended to us.

“It has been done over a period of time that even food materials were supplied to the affected people across the IDPs camps in the country,’’ he said.

According to him, both countries are strategic partners in their respective regions and are key players in these regions.

“The two countries are strategic countries in their respective regions, in Africa Nigeria is a major player while in the middle-east and gulf, Saudi Arabia is a big player as well.

“The cultural relations have existed, even before the independence of the two countries. We have the religious tourism which has been the core relationship in the past.

“But in the present administration of President Bola Tinubu, he has placed emphasis on a cordial and strategic relationship with the government of Saudi Arabia through the crown Prince and various areas of partnership were discussed.

“The two leaders also agreed on the establishment of the Nigeria-Saudi Arabia business council which will drive the economic relationship moving forward,’’ he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

FG revokes 924 dormant mining licences as minister decries racketeering

FG revokes 924 dormant mining licences as minister decries racketeering

The Federal Government has revoked additional 924 dormant mining licenses.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake announced this on Wednesday in Abuja as he decried the racketeering of the issuance of the licences.

He told newsmen that mining licence racketeering was impeding the development of the sector and obstructing genuine investors from showing interest in Nigeria’s mines.

Licences revoked were 528 for exploration; 22 mining leases, 101 quarry licences and 273 small-scale mining licences.

The minister explained that a grace period of 30 days was given to defaulters to rectify their statuses, and to state reasons for dormancy on the sites allocated to them in line with Constitutional provisions.

He said that 963 licences were published in the official gazette of the Federal Government in December 2023 awaiting revocation.

Out of these, only 39 of the listed licence holders responded to the warning as they either moved to site immediately or they stated challenges hindering their operations, he added.

Alake stated that the revocation of the licences was taken to sanitise and reposition the mining sector to boost Nigeria’s economic profile and to accelerate its industrialisation.

He noted that the “first-come, first-served’’ rule in the licencing regime was a disincentive for genuine investors as the rule prohibited issuance of fresh licence on a site already allocated.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ministry revoked 1,663 mining licences in November 2023 because of failure by licensees to pay statutory charges and other dues to the Federal Government.

Alake said that following the revocation of the 1,663 licences in 2023, government received a lot of pressure to reconsider the punitive measure.

According to him, in response to the pressure, government issued a policy for defaulters to make restitution and show remorse in order to be considered for reinstatement.

He said that the restitution varied depending on the category of licence revoked.

“The highest, which is on mining attracts a restitution N10 million per revoked licence payable to the Federal Government.

“For the small-scale licences, the restitution is N7.5 million for reinstatement and for exploration licence, the restitution is N5 million,’’ Alake said.

The minister warned in his 2024 New Year goodwill message that more mining licences would be revoked for other categories of defaulters.

He warned also that Nigeria’s mining sector would not continue to suffer from low investments because of nefarious activities of individuals who bought licences for promising mine sites only to resell them at the illegal market.

He added that the practice was tarnishing Nigeria’s image and was diverting funds that could be used for exploration to the illegal market to acquire licences at exorbitant prices.

Alake stressed that Nigeria was losing a significant amount of Foreign Direct Investment to the untoward practice. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Dr Ebere Anyachukwu, Health Adviser in British High Commission Abuja (BHC) has advised Nigerian parents to vaccinate their children against malaria once the vaccine rolls out in the country.

Anyachukwu gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, ahead of World Malaria Day scheduled for April 25.

He noted that the malaria vaccine combined, with other malaria preventive measures, was key to the fight against the disease.

According to him, against the backdrop of the misconception about the malaria vaccine, studies have shown that the vaccine is safe and effective.

He explained that the vaccine had been used in a number of countries and found to be safe and reliable.

“The vaccines approved by Word Health Organisation (WHO), is RTSS, which was developed by UK institutions like GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), while the R 21 was also developed by Oxford University.

“These developed vaccines marked one of the contributions of the UK to malaria interventions,” he said.

He added that though the malaria vaccines have been approved by the WHO but not yet available in Nigeria.

“My advice will be, once the vaccines are rolled out, Nigerian parents should take advantage of this opportunity to vaccinate their children, not just against malaria, but against all the deadly diseases that affects children

“Parents should also ensure that their children are vaccinated against the whole range of diseases.

“Studies have been done and reviews by WHO have shown that the vaccines are safe.

“These vaccines are effective and safe. And particularly when used in combination with other malaria measures such as insecticide treated malaria bed nets, malaria drugs and seasonal malaria chemoprevention.

” It is imperative to get tested if your child has fever and treat promptly, also keep the environment clean to avoid mosquitoes breeding there, especially where there is stagnant water,” he added. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Ahmed Ubandoma

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), has expressed its readiness to partner with the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST), for effective distribution of membership certificates to Persons with Disability (PWDs).

Dr James Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the commission, said this on Wednesday when he paid a courtesy visit to the Postmaster General, Tola Odeyemi, in her office in Abuja.

Lalu, who was at the NIPOST to solicit for partnership, said the commission would liaise with the Postmaster General, to ensure the distribution of the certificates to PWDs across the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria.

“I believe you will play a key role in ensuring that persons with disabilities get their certificates using the NIPOST digital platform because your offices are located in all the 774 LGAs and beyond.

“We want to leverage on this wider network coverage to distribute these certificates because PWDs resides in rural communities across the country.

“So partnering with Institutions like this will assist us in distributing those certificates” he said.

The Executive Secretary also used the opportunity to inform the Postmaster General on the existence of disability laws.

According to him, the enforcement of discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) Prohibition Act 2018 will commence soon.

He, therefore, urged the Postmaster General to ensure that NIPOST complied with the relevant disability laws.

“Part of the provisions of the law was that in every employment opportunities undertaken by a public establishment, five per cent must be reserved for PWDs.

”Though,  many people will still claim ignorance of the discrimination against Persons with Disabilities law but, when it is taken to them, there will not be excuse anymore” he said.

Lalu told the Postmaster General that the five years moratorium earlier announced by the federal government on the enforcement of discrimination against PWDs laws had elapsed in January 2024.

According to him, this gives room for full compliance and prosecution of anyone who infringes on the law.

He, however, said the penalties would be reviewed by the National Assembly in due time in order to serve as punitive measures.

“The entire part of the law is explicit about the provisions of access to public infrastructure and buildings in the specific mode and measurements” lalu said.

On her part, the Postmaster General said, NIPOST would play a critical role in ensuring that it provided a platform for promoting inclusivity for PWDs.

Odeyemi assured the commission of her determination to assist them in fulfilling their mandate.

She expressed readiness to support efforts towards advocating for the enforcement of the rights of PWDs.

Stakeholders say there is the need to transform the National Statistical System (NSS) to ensure effective statistical delivery in Nigeria.

They spoke at a validation workshop on the Draft National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) Phase III, 2024-2028 in Abuja on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in October 2023, a national stakeholders workshop on the production of the NSDS Phase III, 2024-2028 was held in the Northern and Southern zones of the country.

The Statistician-General (S-G) of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran said the NSDS was a crucial document that outlined the strategic direction for the development of statistics in Nigeria over the next five years.

“It serves as a guide for the development of statistical programmes and activities in the country both at the national and sub-national levels.

“The NSDS aims to enhance the production, dissemination, and use of high-quality statistics to support evidence-based decision-making in all sectors of the economy.

“It is essential, therefore, to note that this validation workshop is a significant milestone in the development process of the NSDS.

“As it provides an important opportunity for stakeholders to review and provide feedback on the draft NSDS document.

“Your valuable inputs will be carefully considered and incorporated into the final version of the NSDS.

This will help us develop a document that is reflective of all stakeholders’ views, more robust and inclusive.”

Adeniran said the strategy would play a key role in ensuring that Nigeria could produce and use high-quality statistics to monitor progress towards achieving the global development agenda, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Neboolisa Anako, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, said the NSDC was an important document to drive development of the statistical system in Nigeria.

Anako, represented by Felix Okonkwo, the Director, Economic Analysis at the ministry urged the participants to give the strategy a final push.

“We must ensure that this draft document reflects valid concerns, and suggestions for a more progressive, robust and vibrant statistical system in Nigeria.”

He commended the NBS for ensuring the NSDS aligned with international best practices including aligning with the National Development Plan.

“The strategy is to address the gaps and challenges in our statistical system and ensure the quality, relevance and availability of the statistics for policymaking, planning, monitoring and evaluation are in place.”

Anako said the ministry would continue to support the NBS to achieve and realise the aims and objectives of the NSDC through the lifespan of the strategy development.

Rep. Ibrahim Isiaka, the Chairman, Committee on National Planning and Economic Development, said the House of Representatives remained committed to supporting the NBS to achieve its mandate.

“I am glad to tell you that depending on how the S-G and his team can convince my committee based on the referral we have we shall be willing to assist them to see how we can remove them from the envelope system.

“We will continue to provide legislative support to the NBS and endure adequate funding and resources, support for the statistical process.

“Together let us work collaboratively with openness and determination toward a more inclusive, transparent, and effective statistical system that will drive Nigeria’s progress and prosperity in the years to come.’’

Isiaka said the NSDC would pave the way for a data-driven future Nigeria would be proud of.
Dr Fanen Ade, the Social Protection Specialist, World Bank, commended the NBS under the leadership of the S-G.

“What the NBS is doing in Nigeria is at par with any county in the world under the leadership of the S-G who has made statistics and data very prominent. We thank you for the good work.

“It is not every country that has a strategy most countries just keep going and if you are going like that it means you are groping in the dark and Nigeria is one of the exceptions.

“We have taken the sample size to look at different countries in Africa that have this type of strategy and are using the resource in this way and Nigeria is at the top.’’

Ade said the World Bank would continue to support Nigeria based on a plan and strategy and work closely with the NBS and the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Poverty: NGO tasks Nigerians on saving culture

Poverty: NGO tasks Nigerians on saving culture

Care International, Nigeria, an NGO has urged the Federal Government to establish a policy framework that will encourage people, especially women, to embrace a saving culture.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, at the 2024 National Savings Group Conference, with the theme, “Accelerating Financial and Economic Inclusion: The Pivotal Role of Savings Group in Nigeria”, the Country Director of the NGO, Dr Hussaini Abdul, said doing so would reduce poverty, especially in rural communities.

Abdul underscored the need to strengthen the process of the saving groups to encourage more participation from all parts of the country.

“For anyone who knows the political economy of this country, poverty is deeply entrenched in the country and it is even more entrenched in the rural areas.

“One of the drivers of poverty in the rural areas is the lack of basic social services. Among these services are financial services.

“But we also know that in the rural communities, people have reacted to those conditions by creating certain cultures that support their financial needs whether you call it “esusu”, “ajo” or “adashi”.

“Over the years, international organisations and local groups have learned to support those mechanisms through a stronger system that allows for better coordination, management, and accountability.

“So we think that it is important for government at all levels to pick a significant interest in what is going on, develop a better policy framework that supports the process of the institutionalisation of this mechanism,” he said.

According to him, the conference will provide a harmonised atmosphere for engagement and collaboration on the pivotal role of savings groups in driving financial inclusion in the country.

Dr Nurudeen Zauro, Technical Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Financial Inclusion, who represented Vice President Kashim Shettima, pledged to review the policy framework to make the environment conducive for savings groups.

“At the moment, about 26 per cent of Nigerians are financially excluded and again we have about 36 per cent of Nigerians that are currently unbanked meaning that the inclusion constitutes about 10 per cent of that from the informal sector.

“Based on the records, we also have a large chunk of Nigerians as multidimensionally poor, and security challenge is associated with this.

“President Bola Tinubu understands this problem and the renewed hope agenda attached important role of financial inclusion,” he said .

The Governor of Benue, Rev. Hyacinth Alia says justice is vital to restoration of sustainable peace and stability in Nigeria.

The governor, represented by his Deputy, Mr Samuel Ode, made this known at the Mercy Corps Community Initiatives to Promote Peace (CIPP) National close out and dissemination event, on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the five-year CIPP programme, funded by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in six states, has come to an end.

The states were Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Benue, Kogi and Plateau.

The intervention was done in 24 LGAs in these states.

Alia said that there was a close relationship between a peaceful society and the delivery of justice in countries across the globe.

“Benue Government is conscious of the fact that CIPP intervention is transit, and we cannot continue to rely on only this intervention for peace keeping within our communities.

“I want to pay a special tribute to the government of the United States of America through USAID for the peace building efforts and generally for helping this great country Nigeria, in deepening democracy and other aspect of our national lives.

“I think that there’s a close nexus between peace in our society and justice, conversations around peace all over the world has established that there’s a nexus between a peaceful society and the delivery of justice,’’ he said.

He lauded the Chief Judge of Katsina State and his counterparts across the country for the elaborate work they are putting in place to ensure quick dispensation of justice.

The USAID Mission Director, Ms Melissa Jones, lauded Mercy Corps for being at the forefront of promoting peace in Nigerian communities.

She said that USAID was a small part in actualising the joinery of peace in some communities in Nigeria.

Jones said politician, faith and traditional leaders should strive to deepen peace building efforts across Nigeria.

“It is in your hands that peace is possible. USA government is pleased to be a small part of this incredible journey,” the director added.

She said that peace building was important to any nation’s progress and development.

“Let me reflect on the realities of violence. Violence destroys lives, children, marriages and our communities and violence in many instances has destroyed many nations, but peace heals, and it is eternal as all the great prophets talk about peace.

“The greatest politicians are known and are remembered for peace.

“Martins Luther King said that, the ark of morality is long and its bends towards justice; at the end of the day we all strive for peace, so why is it so hard to obtain or for us to come together to cross lines to be close?”

She said that the CIPP intervention had demonstrated “something extraordinary”.

“It shows that a small and definite peace can yield remarkable results and individual training in conflict mediations skills has helped to resolve 100 of disputes before they are escalated further,’’ Jones added.

Mr Ndubisi Anyanwu, Mercy Corps Country Director, said that as CIPP was rounding up, it has brought about hope to a region grappling with complex challenges.

“We all know the narrative; violence fueled by competition for dwindling resources, climate change, and political tensions.

“These conflicts have devastated communities in the North West states of Kano, Kaduna and Katsina and North central states of Plateau, Benue and Kogi.

“Villages burned, livelihoods destroyed, lives tragically lost – the human cost has been immense,” he added.

Anyawu said that the intervention was to empower communities to become architects of their own peace.

“Alongside our partners we embarked on a transformative journey. We empowered communities to become architects of their peace and resilience.

“CIPP was not about imposing solutions. It was about equipping community leaders, religious leaders, women, youth, and government officials with the tools they needed to resolve disputes peacefully.

“We provide training in conflict management, negotiation, mediation, and early warning systems and responses.

“We fostered dialogue, reconciliation, and economic interdependence,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the USAID-funded CIPP programme worked with communities to address the root causes of conflict and build sustainable peace structures.
