“This programme aims to help develop leadership strategies to drive optimum performance for success in an era of uncertainty.

“Its focus is to help the participants develop a clearer understanding of how to manage and deploy the available resources more efficiently for optimal impact in volatile times,” Lucas said.

She said TEXEM’s tested and proven methodology comprising of case studies will be deployed during the programme.

Lucas said this will encourage participants to enhance their cognitive skills, improve their analytical rigour, evaluation skills, and assist them in managing ambiguity better.

Lucas added that they would possess survival skills that would enable them to pull out their organisations during emergencies.

“Among the benefits participants will take away from this impactful programme is that for
individuals, it will unlock your potential in adversity, lead through transformation, and achieve profitable growth.

“As for organisations, it will turn their challenges into opportunities, foster innovation, and drive sustained profitability.

On requirement of leadership in crisis management, Lucas said with a huge exodus of staff and geopolitical disruptions, senior leaders must possess exceptional crisis management skills.

“This program equips participants with the necessary leadership capabilities to lead through crises, ensuring organizational excellence even in the face of adversity,” she asserted.

“Through peer-to-peer learning and observation practice, this programme enhances participants’ decision-making capabilities, empowering them to make better decisions that drive organizational success.

“Beyond the curriculum, participants will have the opportunity for professional exchange with critical partners and colleagues.

“Networking with industry peers enhances learning and provides valuable insights into different approaches to overcoming challenges, enriching the overall learning experience,” Lucas said.

She said TEXEM has collaborated with leaders and organizations in Nigeria and other African countries in bringing out the best leaders in governance and business.

The National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) on Monday in Abuja disclosed plans to build recreational centres for senior citizens across six geo-political zones of the country.

Dr Emem Omokaro, the Director-General, NSCC made the disclosure at the signing of  Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a private developer, Ovoteri Nigeria Ltd. for the execution of NSCC’s one community one Senior Citizens’ Centre Project.

Omokaro explained that, the idea of establishing, at least one senior citizens’ centre per community is to continue engaging older persons and give them a sense of belonging.

She said, public-private-partnership was critical to the realisation of the project.

The D-G said the centre would provide a unique opportunity for both the young and older persons to exchange ideas and provide counseling services to the youths.

‘“What is good about this project is that, though it focuses on older persons, but it is truly inter-generational.

“We design the programme in such a way that our youths will have life coaches as mentors and the senior citizens are going to have tutors for ICT.

“It is an impactful initiative for the inter-generational and we are going to upscale our artisans, so that whatever our older persons want to do to promote their healthy living, it can take care of that,’’ she said.

The D-G explained that the NSCC will engage members of the National Assembly, the Nigeria Governors Forum and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria to support the implementation of the project.

“Due to paucity of funds, we are engaging stakeholders from both public and private sectors, especially members of the national assembly to see a way of including these centres in their various constituency projects.

“The senior citizens that need these facilities are spread across 774 local government areas in the country,’’ she said.

Responding, Dr. Ovwe Sowho, the Chief Executive Officer of Ovoteri Nigeria Limited, expressed readiness to support all efforts towards achieving the NSCC’s target of one community one senior citizens’ centre project.

Sowho expressed confidence in the ability of NSCC’s executives to ensure the realisation of the ambitious project.

”For us as private sector we would mobilise other partners to invest in this project as part of our corporate social responsibility” she said (NAN) (www.nannews.ng).

From Copenhagen to Abuja on two wheels

From Copenhagen to Abuja on two wheels

It was a hot Wednesday morning, July 21, 2001, an accident had just occurred in the upscale Mabushi District of Abuja.

Accidents occur everywhere in the world, but there is something unique about this one. It sent a top-ranking minister and his beloved bicycle crashing into a ditch.

“I thank God I’m alive,” Chief Ojo Maduekwe, then Minister of Transportation told reporters as he marveled at escaping without injuries after he was knocked down from his bicycle by a reckless bus driver.

“Accidents can happen anywhere, on land, sea and air,” Maduekwe said stressing that the problem was not riding his bicycle but too many cars and a lack of lane for bicycles.

“Ojo oni Keke” (Ojo the bicycle rider) as he was called in some quarters was cycling to the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at Aso Villa, Abuja as part of his campaign to promote bike riding in Nigeria.

The former minister, who also served as minister of Foreign Affairs died in June 29, 2016 but his bold but controversial initiative remains relevant.

Twenty one years after the famous accident, the biking culture still remains precarious in all major cities of Nigeria, and with the growing need to cut down on emissions, experts have advocated bicycles as alternative to the emission polluting vehicles.

The contrast is however the case in Copenhagen, Denmark where the city has earned the reputation as being ranked the most bicycle friendly city in the world.

Copenhagen boasts of more bicycles than residents, with over 672,000 bikes on its 384 kilometres of cycle lanes.

Cycling is regarded as healthier, more environmentally friendly, cheaper, and often quicker with well-marked out lanes for bicycles to get around the city.

Henrik Pedersen, a Danish Environmental expert told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Nigerians could embrace the bicycle culture as part of efforts to cut down emissions from automobiles.

He said the use of bicycles is a cheaper, faster and more eco-friendly way of commuting in African cities like Abuja, as long as the necessary infrastructures are put in place.

“If you move on a bicycle rather than a car you have no emissions, even if it is electric bicycle, the emission would be very low at least.

“Also producing bicycles does not take a lot of resources or emit a lot of CO2 (cabon dioxide) compared to cars.

“So this measure can go a long way in addressing some of the climate issues, apart from the fact that riding a bicycle keeps you healthy,” he said.

Lise Walbom, CEO, Food Nation, a leading food and agriculture company in Denmark told NAN that the bicycle culture in Denmark is encouraged right from a very young age.

“My husband and I pedaled behind our 11-year-old twins as they cycled to school and we go to work with our bicycles.

“It is easy and effective to use our bikes in our everyday life and good for my health!” she said.

Andreas Tomasson, a salesman in Copenhagen, said he had no reason to buy a car because he owns a bicycle and there is efficient transport system that includes intra and intercity train services.

In September, 2017, the then Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi after the National Council on Transportation (NCT) 15th meeting in Sokoto said the Council had approved a pilot `bicycle riding’ project, as a means of transportation in Abuja (FCT).

“The National Council on Transportation is a policy making body. We approved that we should do a pilot project on bicycle riding in FCT.

“This is because Abuja is the only city that has facility for bicycle riding.

“For other states who want to do it, we must provide facility before they can proceed with it; we want to separate them from the roads because some motorists are impatient,” Amaechi said.

Mr Bisi Kazeem, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Public Education Officer said infrastructure adjustments must be done to support bicycle transport culture in Abuja.

He said the national road safety regulations will also have to be amended to include provisions for the safety of cyclists.

“As a pilot scheme, if Abuja is taken, there is need for restructuring some intersections before we can start it successfully.

“FRSC studied all the road networks in Abuja, and we have identified the gaps and recommended measures to address them

“During the study, which we carried out with Federal Capital Territory Administration officials, we found out that all roads and streets have provisions for bicycle lanes in the design,

“But at the point of construction, the lanes were either ignored, merged with pedestrian walkways thereby making the walkways too wide. In some cases they were turned into green areas.

“I think it is only on Yakubu Gowon Way in Asokoro that the lane is being implemented. So, a key concern is the need for re-engineering of intersections and traffic lights to provide for cyclists,” he said.

Experts say that to maximize the health, safety and environmental advantages of cycling, relevant authorities should put in place the necessary infrastructure and take actions to promote cycling in the nation. (NANFeatures) (www.nannews.ng)

The National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) says it is collaborating with the Canadian Government on gender-responsive climate change action in Nigeria.

Dr Salisu Dahiru, the Director- General of NCCC, communicated this on Friday in Abuja at a one-day workshop to brainstorm on a draft report on gender-responsive climate action in Nigeria.

Dahiru acknowledged the critical role of gender equality in climate action and stressed the need for massive sensitisation, mobilisation, education, capacity building, and enhancement to achieve effective climate action.

He expressed gratitude to the Canadian High Commission and other key technical stakeholders.

He called for a deeper partnership on mobilising additional development projects, as well as support for new initiatives focused on climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The director-general urged the Canadian government to further invest in Nigeria as President Bola Tinubu was ready to remove any potential roadblocks hindering Canadian private sector investment in Nigerian climate change solutions.

He assured that the workshop would fulfill the United Nations Climate Change requirements for gender inclusiveness.

Earlier in her remarks, Likezo Karn, First Secretary and Senior Development Officer, Development Cooperation Section of the Government of Canada, highlighted the importance of gender equality in Canada’s international assistance approach.

“Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy is based on the strong belief that successful development programmes require the equal participation and consideration of all genders.

“This includes men, women, boys, and girls.

“Gender equality is not just about fairness, but also about effectiveness; every development issue from climate change impacts men and women differently,” Karn explained.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports (NAN) reports that the workshop was held with the support of Global Affairs, Canada, to evaluate the impact of policies, programmes and projects on gender in Nigeria and identify areas of improvement. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Dr Chike Okogwu, founder, Centre for Ability Rehabilitation and Empowerment (CARE), an NGO, has appealed to the Federal Government to establish disability service desk in all domestic and International Airports.

Okogwu said the idea was to assist as well as check cases of discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

He said this on Wednesday, while handing over some assistive devices and operational guidelines of Aviation accessibility project for PWDs, to the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), in Abuja.

He said the project which was initiated by CARE in collaboration with OXFAM initiative, was designed to support PWDs to get easy access to airports facilities across the country.

According to him, we have successfully completed a disability service desk at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja to provide all the disability needs when travelling by air.

Okogwu, however, said the group could not sustain the project, hence the need for the commission to take over and ensure its sustainability.

”Our aim was to improve the accessibility and inclusivity of air travellers within the disability communities because the facility we erected at the airport include installation of ambi lifts and stair climbing for PWDs.

”Others are wheelchairs, umbrella for Persons with Albinism, Manual Waiting wheelchair, all enabling better mobility for Persons with Disabilities.

”We also provided sign language for the deaf,” he said.

Okogwu expressed the need for the federal government to increase the budgetary allocation of NCPWD to one trillion naira (N1 trillion) as against the current allocation of one billion naira (N1 billion).

According to him, this will help the commission to deliver on its mandate of attending to over 30 million persons with disabilities which constituted 15 per cent of Nigeria’s population.

Responding, the NCPWD Boss, Mr James Lalu, assured the visitors of federal government’s readiness to take-over the project with a view to providing relief to PWDs while travelling by air.

Lalu also expressed commitment to deploy manpower that would ensure the sustainability of the project.

He also promised that the commission would deploy at least three of its personnel in each of the airports across the country to provide essential services to PWDs.

He appealed to the visitors to assist in training his staff to administer the project effectively.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Injury: Super Eagles star Boniface back in Bayer Leverkusen squad —- Alonso

Injury: Super Eagles star Boniface back in Bayer Leverkusen squad —- Alonso

300 total views today

Bayer Leverkusen striker, Victor Boniface will be back in the squad for Wednesday’s German Cup semi-final against Fortuna Dusseldorf following a three-month injury absence, coach Xabi Alonso said on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Super Eagles forward underwent surgery on an adductor muscle injury in January after being injured while preparing with Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire.

“We are in a super situation. We have no injuries and a full squad. Boni (Boniface) is also back in the squad,” Alonso told a press conference, with the Bundesliga leaders in the hunt for three trophies this season.

Asked how long Boniface could play in the game, Alonso said: “Not 90 minutes. 45 maybe not. But maybe 30. He has done a good recovery and has trained well.

“He has a strong mentality to come back. He can’t wait to get back.”

Boniface had scored 10 goals and set up another seven in the Bundesliga before his injury.

Leverkusen are on course for a first ever Bundesliga title with a 13-point lead over second-placed Bayern Munich and seven games remaining.

They are also through to the Europa League quarter-finals having gone 39 matches unbeaten across all competitions this season.

“We have to take it one game at a time. That’s the way we have done it until now and we will not change that,” said the Spaniard, who confirmed last week he would be staying at Leverkusen despite interest from major European clubs.

“We have done a lot but have won nothing so far. We still have a lot of work to do. We have done a few things well to get here but we should not speak too early.”

“We have to remain focused and that is the message I give my players and they know it,” he said.
