Mouktar Mohammed, the Chairman, FCT Football Association has said that Victor Osimhen deserves to win the African Player of the Year award 2023.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Osimhen was among 30 players listed for the top prize; CAF African Player of the Year 2023 announced by CAF on Wednesday.

The Awards Gala is scheduled for Dec. 11 in Marrakech, Morocco.

Mohammed told NAN that Osimhen had worked really hard in the year under review to earn his place in both Africa and the world football top rankings.

NAN also reports that Osimhen made history for Nigeria and Africa as he finished in an impressive eight position in the 2023 Men’s Ballon d’Or rankings on Monday.

He became the first Nigerian to be nominated and finished in the top 10 in the male category in 24 years.

Sunday Oliseh and Kanu Nwankwo were nominated for the 1998 and 1999 Ballon d’Or awards but did not finish in the top 20.

With his eight-place finish, the goal-scoring machine sets the record as the highest-ranked Nigerian player at the Ballon d’Or and also the highest-ranked African player at this year’s edition.

“I think he has done enough to win the Africa Player of the Year Award. He deserves it, especially after finishing 8th on the Ballon d’Or list.

“Osimhen was in fine form in the 2022/2023 season, as his 25 league goals helped Italian football royalty Napoli to their first Seria A title in 33 years.

“He pipped Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan and AC Milan’s Rafael Leao to clinch the Best Striker in Serie A gong.

“Osimhen scored five times in six games for Napoli as they reached the quarterfinal stages of the UEFA Champions League,” he said.

He said that Osimhen was also instrumental in the Super Eagles sealing a ticket for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Mohammed said that his league goals helped him become the first African to top the Serie A scorers’ chart, and break George Weah’s record for the most goals scored by an African in the Italian league.

The football administrator said however that even though Osimhen was good enough to win the CAF Men’s award, there were other factors that could count against him.

He said that emotions were sometimes involved with the African awards, so one might never know, adding that there have been big surprises in the past.

“The World Cup tournament is seen as the biggest platform and Nigeria couldn’t qualify for the showpiece in Qatar.

“Osimhen’s greatest challenge may likely come from Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi who won a title with his club and went all the way to the World Cup semi-finals with his country, which is massive.

“Then there is also Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez who won the treble with Manchester City, including the English Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

“You also have to consider the sharp regional divide and vested interest. The Anglophone and Francophone dichotomy has always been in existence, so that is another factor from the political angle.

“But having said that, I still strongly believe that what Osimhen has achieved is incredible and he deserves to win it,” he said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu, says the Federal Government will enforce the processing of industrial raw materials locally to boost foreign exchange inflow and enhance job creation.

Addressing the 2nd edition of the Africa Natural Resources and Energy Investment Summit on Tuesday in Abuja, Audu said some pathways had been suggested that transition metals could be produced locally with requisite value addition.

He said such pathways included enforcing the processing of raw materials locally.

“Government will provide an environment conducive to investments in minerals processing plants across the country.

“This will ensure FOREX proliferation and creation of jobs for skilled and unskilled workers in the mining sector.

“We must improve promotional activities for specific minerals; we must build on several on-going initiatives to grow Nigeria’s mining sector.

“Local and global promotion needs to be intensified on lithium, gold, limestone, among others to attract investments into the sector,’’ he said.

The minister said the government would also invest in exploration of bankable data for mining.

“Government will encourage investments in the determination of large volumes and deposits of transition metals.

“We need to secure the mining environment; ensuring a secure environment through enhanced security initiatives remains one of the matters that require urgent attention.

“We need to establish host communities mineral development fund.

“This will address the challenges investors usually encounter with local communities on ownership of mineral deposits,’’ he said.

Audu noted that Nigeria’s journey in the mining sector had been both transformative and evolutionary.

According to him, as Nigeria stands at the cusp of a new era, the pursuit of value addition becomes paramount, particularly in the realm of transition metals.

“The demand for these metals, crucial in the development of green technologies, has surged globally.

“Africa’s potential to meet this demand is vast, yet largely untapped.

“The key lies not only in extracting these metals, but in harnessing our capabilities to produce and refine them locally.

“Doing so is an opportunity to foster economic growth, create jobs, and also maintain control over our resource value chain.

“By investing in domestic refining and production capabilities, we are adding value and also paving the way for sustainable development,’’’ the minister stressed.

He said collaboration between the Federal Government and sub-national governments, industry stakeholders, and investors was necessary to build a robust infrastructure, promote innovation, and instigate supportive policies that encouraged local value addition.

“Furthermore, it calls for a commitment to sustainability, incorporating responsible mining practices, and embracing environmentally-friendly production techniques to mitigate any adverse impact on the ecosystem.

“As the minister of steel development, I stand committed to supporting initiatives that foster the local production of transition metals.

“We are committed to a sustainable future that demands innovation and transformation in steel production, ensuring that our advancements align with global environmental standards,’’ Audu said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Passport applicants allege massive extortion by NIS officials in Abuja

Passport applicants allege massive extortion by NIS officials in Abuja

By Ibironke Ariyo

Some Nigerians who applied for international passports have accused personnel of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) Abuja passport office, of massive extortion.

The passport applicants said in spite of recent directive of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo to the immigration authorities to sanitise the system, nothing much has changed.

The applicants who spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), lamented that they were made to pay various sums of money by NIS officials before getting the travel document.

They also alleged that the electronic passport application system has been compromised, forcing those who followed due process with no alternative than to “settle” NIS officials in order to get their passports on time.

Some of them further alleged that even when the passport was ready, they were made to pay another N5,000 before collection.

An applicant, Mr Ahmed Isa, a civil servant, said that he had been to the passport office over 10 times and was yet to get his passport.

“I have been coming here since September to get a passport because I want to travel out of the country.

“First, they said the fee is N35,500 but now they have jacked it to N55, 500. This is for a passport with a duration of five years.

“Everybody is telling you to pay this and that and the place is chaotic. The whole thing is frustrating,” Isa said.

Another applicant, Mohammed Umar, said that he came for the re-issuing of his passport which had expired but was told by a NIS official to pay additional “compliance fee”.

“When I asked them what the compliance fee is for, the man pushed me aside and walked away.

“All I have noticed here is that many of the officials are unruly and behaving as if they are not accountable to anyone,” Umar said.

Another applicant who sought for anonymity, said she applied for passport renewal online in August 2022 and was still waiting.

“Every time I go to the immigration office to track its progress, officials kept telling me to contact the person helping me.

“It has been frustrating and depressing. Everyone expects and believe I should have a certain someone who is helping me.

“When I told them I did it online, I got the ‘ohh’ look and then the term ‘self-service’ follows me everywhere I turn to for help,” she added.

Another passport applicant, Blessing Ibiyemi, told NAN that she missed out on a scholarship abroad because of her inability to get her passport processed in spite of following due process.

“I applied for passport in April and I just got my passport now in October after paying an extra N40,000 to process it.

“The first time I came to their office, I told them I paid online, they gave me a chair to sit and I was there for hours.

“When I asked them why I am still here, they told me to contact the officer helping me, I was shocked because I paid online and I didn’t expect any officer to be helping me.

“The NIS has not shown true commitment to wanting to tackle this menace,” Ibiyemi said.

A female applicant said under condition of anonymity that she missed a very important training abroad in spite of paying fully for the passport.

”I paid N116,000 for a 32-page passport booklet. At every stage of the process the personnel ask for money.

”I paid N70,000 initially and I was told to pay another N36,000 for adding another name, my marital name, then another N10,000 for approval of the passport, and at the collection point, I paid another N20,000.

”When I demanded for receipt the personnel helping me became angry,” she said.

Another victim, Mr Alarape Ogunmuyiwa, said that he was initially charged N80,000 for renewal of his passport.

Ogunmuyiwa added that he was later made to pay extra N20,000, because the official in charge told him that the expired passport was “defaced”.

“I am yet to get my booklet. They kept saying no booklets. The funny part is that, the officer in charge of my passport is not even picking my calls.

“Now, I have paid N100,000 to get my passport and yet I can’t access it, this is frustrating and I can’t take this anymore,” he said.

A journalist, Dennis Abraham, whose passport expired in August said after paying N120,000 for a 10-year validity passport, he was initially told to pay additional N25,000 and later another N15,000 to correct a mistake on his date of birth.

Abraham said that the immigration officer he was dealing with, said though NIMCI had effected correction to the date, the change is yet to reflect in the immigration portal.

“I’m still waiting after paying N160,000 to renew my passport. Hopefully it will be ready soon,” he added.

An immigration official who pleaded anonymity told NAN that the system has been highly compromised, adding that those who applied for passport online “will take forever to get their passports”.

“What obtains now is to pay any officer who will fast-track the process for you and you’ll get your passport within the space of two weeks after application,” he said.

Another official told NAN that the extortion of passport applicants by fellow immigration officers is real.

He described the situation as not only embarrassing, but also a huge threat to national security.

“It is a menace, we may not know the full implication today until a little later when the negative impact of this issue begins to manifest in our national security negatively.

“It has national security implications for Nigeria. We are talking about obtaining a Nigerian passport.

“Now, if we the officials involved are only after money, it means anybody can come into Nigeria through any of our porous borders, play the necessary game, and obtain anything that makes and certifies him as a Nigerian citizen,” he lamented.

The officer, who advised that drastic measures must be taken to curb the menace, urged passport applicants to resist any attempt to force them into offering bribe for passport.

He said that it was important for victims of the extortion to report to higher authorities.

However, the Service Public Relations Officer, Dr Adedotun Aridegbe, dismissed the allegations as untrue, claiming that some passport applicants fabricate stories to dent the image of NIS.

According to him, it is not possible for applicants to pay more than the official amount for passport booklets.

“All these things are not true. It’s unrealistic. When I investigated some of these allegations, some applicants just formulate stories to tarnish our good image.

“We have officers that work round the clock including weekends and even run shifts to produce these passports.

“There is a task force set up by the Comptroller General, Mrs Caroline Adepoju to checkmate any illicit activities going on in the passport offices,” he claimed.

Aridegbe said instead of the “unfounded allegations”, Passport Control Offciers across the nation should be commended for being able to clear backlogs of passport applications as directed recently by the minister.

He said both the Minister and the Comptroller General went through sleepless nights to ensure that the backlogs were cleared.

The NIS spokesman however said disciplinary action would be taken against any officer found wanting. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Directorate of Technical Aid Corps (DTAC) says the Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Investigation of Nigeria (CIFCFIN) can become a major foreign exchange earner for the country.

Director-General of the directorate, Dr Yusuf Yakub, said this when he received in his office in Abuja, a six-man delegation from the institute.

“What we do here is to deploy soft power diplomacy to Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific nations. And we have not stopped there.

“There is no longer a bilateral thing as we have gone triangular because we also deploy to some international organisations.

“For instance, the United Nations Development Programme presently has some volunteers in New York.

“We are not stopping there because other countries that are not covered by our Act (establishment) are also requesting that they be carried along, and by the grace of God we will amend the Act and we will cover the rest of the world.

“Nigeria, as far as I am concerned, is a superpower in Africa, and in the future, it will be a superpower globally.

“So we are going to expand our scope, not only to cover Africa but to cover the rest of the world,” he said.

He thanked the delegation for the visit and expressed appreciation to it for what it is doing for Nigeria, not only by providing forensic services in fighting corruption but by positioning itself to become a major foreign exchange earner to the country in the near future.

Speaking earlier, Dr Ibrahim Gashinbaki, the pioneer President and Chairman Governing Council of the institute, said CIFCFIN was the only chartered professional body with a multi-sectoral mandate to advance and promote the practice of forensics and fraud investigation in Nigeria.

Gashinbaki said that the Act establishing the institute was signed into law in Dec. 2022, with powers and functions covering laboratory forensic analysis for law enforcement agencies, government institutions, and the private sector.

Other powers and functions of the institute are training, supervision, and regulation of the practice of Forensic and Fraud Investigation in Nigeria.

According to him, such powers and functions give the institute the authority to develop a practical understanding of the areas of knowledge and skills essential to the forensic and fraud investigation profession.

He added that the powers available to the agency empower the institute to establish the Nigerian College of Forensic and Fraud Investigators (NCFF) which is mandated to offer training, development, certification, standardisation, and regulation of members and eligible persons in the area.

Another function the powers have enabled the institute to perform is the establishment of Forensic Analysis Laboratories with a multi-disciplinary capacity.

They include but are not limited to document forensic laboratory; digital and cyber forensics; document forensic laboratory, and Medical Forensic Laboratory.

He said Nigeria would soon become an exporter of forensic agents to other countries of the world in view of the different categories of forensic laboratories already established in the country.   (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Marrakech: Beyond the World Bank, IMF meeting rooms

Marrakech: Beyond the World Bank, IMF meeting rooms

The world recently gathered in Marrakech, Morocco for the annual World Bank/International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings.

The meetings, which had been scheduled for 2020 were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and came 50 years after similar meetings were last hosted on the African continent, the 1973 meetings in Nairobi, Kenya.

Little wonder the organisers did not allow the devastating earthquake that affected Marrakech and some other parts Morocco in September to derail the hosting right as the organisers decided to go ahead with the meeting.

In a joint statement ahead of the meeting, the World Bank President, Ajay Banga, IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva; and Kingdom of Morocco Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah Alaoui said the meetings will hold by “adapting the content to the circumstances”.

They said that since the Sept. 8 earthquake the World Bank and the IMF staff had worked in close coordination with the Moroccan authorities and a team of experts to thoroughly assess Marrakech’s capacity to host the Meetings.

“In undertaking this assessment, key considerations were that the meetings would not disrupt vital relief and reconstruction efforts, and that the safety of the participants can be assured.

“Based on a careful review of the findings, the Managements of the World Bank and IMF, with the Moroccan authorities, have agreed to proceed with holding the 2023 Annual Meetings in Marrakech.

“The meetings will be conducted in a way that does not hamper the relief efforts, and respects the victims and Moroccan people.

“At this very difficult time, we believe that the annual meetings also provide an opportunity for the international community to stand by Morocco and its people, who have once again shown resilience in the face of tragedy.

“We also remain committed to ensuring the safety of all participants,” they said.

Hosting of the meetings by Morocco apparently brought relief to Moroccans, especially residents of the beautiful city of Marrakech, many of who took advantage of the influx of visitors to make brisk business.

At the Marrakech Menara Airport, hundreds of residents came with vehicles to convey delegates to their destination at exorbitant fees.

As it turned, the city is also a huge tourism destination, with hordes of visiting tourists, mostly Asians and Europeans jostling for space with delegates for annual meetings of the Bretton Woods institutions.

Some home owners in the city also vacated their homes and rented them out to delegates and tourists, charging between 300 dollars to 3000 dollars for the one week duration of the meetings.

A taxi driver, Abubakar Awal, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that residents of Marrakech were happy WITH the presence of many participants from across the world for the meetings.

“Welcome to Marrakech. We are happy to have you all here. Morocco is a beautiful country and I am sure you will enjoy your stay,” he said.

Adil Imam, another resident of the city, said that the influx of people into the city was a huge relief from the recent tragic earthquake.

“We are happy that people are coming in here from all over the world. We will do everything to make you enjoy your stay here,” he said.

And they did. The city is beautiful, with working social amenities  like electricity, potable water and a good road network,  and warm, friendly citizens, always eager to engage visitors and show them around.

All houses are beautifully painted brown; every single house in Marrakech! And as Abubakar, said, the city is called “brown city”.

He said that other major Moroccan cities like Rabbat and Casablanca also have their different colour codes.

The roads are good and very busy, accommodating every moving vehicle, from exotic cars to motorcycles, bicycles and even carts that are pulled by horses.

Every conversation with a “Marrakechian” easily drifts towards the “gulugulu”, a local aphrodisiac, that they are all proud of.

As they say, “gulugulu makes homes happy. When you take gulugulu lock the door with your wife inside and throw away the keys.”

The multiplier effect of the meetings on the city, no doubt will linger for years in the minds of the locals.

Gulugulu, the herb that makes Marrakech homes happy!

Marrakech in Morocco is proof that Africans can make Africa work. It is worth visiting. (NANFeatures)

“Our regions are closely linked and what happens in one area affects the other , and we appreciate what Germany is doing individually and as well as through thr European Union supporting this region.

‘We are particularly, appreciative of the partnership that we continue to enjoy with Germany and the EU .

“Particularly in the area of peace and security, unconstitutional change in government, stronger governance, we are mindful of the importance that these represent for our development,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Nigerian clubs can learn from Bundesliga sides, FCT FA boss says

Nigerian clubs can learn from Bundesliga sides, FCT FA boss says

Mouktar Mohammed, the Chairman, FCT Football Association, says Nigerian clubs can become a success story in terms of growth and development, using the FC Bayern Munich model.

Mohammed spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday from Munich, Germany where he is currently on a tour of Bundesliga side, FC Bayern Munich Football Club.

He said that Bundesliga clubs have continued to lay down the standards for the rest of the world, in terms of financing, structure, sponsorship and followership.

“I had the rare opportunity to see the dynamics that have made the clubs in the German top-flight the most profitable in the world football.

“I think Nigerian clubs can indeed learn a lot from Bundesliga sides that go into commercial partnership with local companies in their respective areas.

“They draw financial strength from such contracts, rather than go cap-in-hand to state governors, who in Nigeria will starve them of funds,” he said.

The FCT boss said the tour brought to the fore the begging question of why Nigerian clubs always begging from hand- to-mouth from self-serving state governors.

He alleged that these governors usually see the clubs as mere pawns to be used in their hands to fester their selfish and inordinate desires.

Mohammed said that unlike the Nigerian League, the Bundesliga is financially strong and founded on a business model.

“This is basically to discourage control by a single entity, which accounts for great support that a team like Bayern enjoy from residents of Munich.

“Unlike the government ownership club structure in Nigeria, German clubs in the Bundesliga operate under the 50+1 rule structure that stipulates that teams are majority- owned by German club members.

“Bayern, for instance, draw its support from locals in Munich, creating a sense of belonging for the fans, who see the club as their ,“ said.

He said that all these generally accounted for why a club like Bayern had sold all its tickets for the 2023-2024 season since February.

Mohammed said that it was irrespective of the fact that the Bundesliga had the lowest ticket prices and the highest average attendance out of Europe’s five major leagues.

The football administrator also said that youth development was the cornerstone of German football success.

“Unlike in Nigeria, where football clubs run without academies to mint the next youngsters that will take over from the league stars, Bundesliga sides have world-class academies.

“These academies regularly churn out players that go as far as playing in the country’s top-flight league.

“A case in point is the Bayern Academy, which, to their credit, has been a ready supply chain of players for Bayern’s main team.

“A classic example is Thomas Muller, a true and true Bavarian, who grew from the academy team to become a top striker for the 32-time Bundesliga champions,” he said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

SCI seeks urgent action to address child marriage in Nigeria

SCI seeks urgent action to address child marriage in Nigeria

Save the Children International (SCI) Nigeria, has called on the Federal Government to holistically address child marriages as reports reveal that there are 23 million child-brides in Nigeria.

The report titled “Budgeting to End Child Marriage in Nigeria’ was launched by the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye at a Girls led conference organised by SCI in Abuja.

The SCI report showed that Northern Nigeria, recorded the highest number of child-brides, as 48 per cent of women are married before age 15, while 78 per cent are married before age 18,.

The report also showed that adequate funding is required at all levels of government to effectively and sustainably curb the menace that endangers the future of the girl-child.

The report further revealed that child marriage is both a cause and consequence of adolescent pregnancy and is linked to maternal mortality, poor education, ongoing exposure to gender based violence, illiteracy and intergenerational poverty, and this threatens girls right and gender equality.

“With a population of more than 218 million people, Nigeria is home to 23 million child brides, with two in every five women married as children.”

The report called on the government to upscale funding to protect the girl-child, ensuring they remained unmarried and are in school, and also build more classrooms and schools to accommodate more girls, hence the need to increase the budget to end child marriage.

It also called for the need to establish technical working groups to end child marriage; Put together advocacy groups to keep track of financial releases and allocations at the State level.

It also called for the implementation of the Nigerian Government’s Generation Equally commitments with a strong focus on child marriage and reform to enable more effective budget allocation.
